New school Chaplain

I welcomed a new chaplain, Sharron Harring to our school. She commenced this week. Please take the time to say ‘hello’. This is a valuable role in supporting our students and families.

Have a safe and enjoyable fortnight everyone!

Rick Walters Principal

INTRODUCING OUR NEW CHAPLAIN

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself to the Lathlain Primary School community. My name is Sharon Harring and I am the new school Chaplain, working every Thursday and Friday. I have a solid understanding of the school environment, demands and pressures. Before taking on this role of Chaplaincy, I worked in the Education Department as a K-7 teacher trained in EAL/D and special needs. I am also a mother of 5 grown children and 4 young grandchildren.

My office space is situated between Rooms 6 and 7 and I am a strong believer in an open-door policy. This space is confidential and non-judgmental, I am always ready to listen, talk, play a game, read a book, or just come and be in a safe place.

The Chaplaincy program works with individuals, groups, and supports classroom teachers in building an understanding of resilience, anxiety, social skills, depression and self-awareness/management while incorporating the school program - Positive Behaviours (PBS). As a Chaplain, I am here to support and promote academic, mental, social and emotional wellbeing in our students and school community.

For students to engage in the Chaplaincy program they can acquire a referral from their teacher or parent/carer. However, I will be wondering around the playground during recess and lunch if anyone wants a buddy.

I am also here to support the wider community therefore if you would like a confidential chat or have concerns, please make an appointment through the main office or contact me on [email protected].

I believe our children need the opportunity to grow and have the right to learn in a safe environment and become valued members of our community. Let’s face it, school should be a fun place where we feel safe to experience new things, problem solve, learn and build positive relationships.

Building successful lifelong Learners and developing empowered individuals in a caring and connected

community.

STUDENT IMAGES AND PROFILE PICTURES ALERT

There is a significant increase in online accounts for both parents and students. It is recommended that student images are not used for a profile picture. Changing a profile to include a student image conflicts with online safety and Department of Education Policy. Students are taught not to use their image for their profile picture. An alternative is to use an avatar, bitmoji or leave the default blank. If you have assisted your child to upload an image of themselves onto SeeSaw, Microsoft 365 or other accounts, please take a moment to change it to a more suitable image. We thank you for your understanding.

MATHS CHALLENGE

Last term the school ran a Maths Challenge as part of Literacy and Numeracy Week. Students were given problem solving and mental maths questions in their classroom which resulted in the selection of year level finalists. The finalists had to complete more complex questions in a 30-minute time limit. Students were assessed on both their correct answers and their explanation and working out.

Congratulations to the finalists and champions of each year level.

CAN YOU HELP?

Japanese Cultural Day

On Tuesday 3 August, following the Year 6 Japanese Assembly, the whole school will be taking part in a Japanese Cultural Day.

Students and staff will participate in their class groups in a rotation of a range of indoor and outdoor Japanese cultural activities. hese may include art & craft (eg shibori, origami), indoor and outdoor traditional games (eg hanetsuki, taketombo, kendama, fukuwarai, kingyo sukui), sports (tamaire, chanbara), taiko drumming, and Japanese-themed ICT activities (Kindergarten and Pre-Primary activities will be modified). Our wonderful canteen will have on sale some delicious Japanese food options as well.

Students are encouraged to dress Japanese for the day. In the spirit of mottainai (mindfulness about waste) home-made costumes are strongly encouraged. These can be very simple to make, examples can be found at the bottom of this link.

We are seeking parent/caregiver assistance on the day. These opportunities will include helping to set up early in the morning, providing an extra pair of hands to support the rotations throughout the day, and packing away in the afternoon. In particular, if you have any experience in the Japanese activities listed above, or Japanese language skills that will assist in enriching the experience for our students, we would love to hear from you. Please follow this link to volunteer your services.

Support from Men’s Shed and Bunnings

Our deepest thanks go to the craftsmen of Victoria Park Men’s Shed for their generosity in making a set of hagoita (Japanese badminton bats) for our school. The project was overseen by Chairman Peter Guthrie (left) using plywood donated by Bunnings, which in 2019 supplied the rubbish bins that were made into taiko drums for the music program. Students will use the hagoita and taiko during activities for the Japanese Cultural Day on 3rd August. Once again, thank you VP Men’s Shed and Bunnings for your continued, generous support of our learning programs.
