Civil War VeteransElks Invited to Dedication of Hawai‘i Civil War Vet Tombstone
Finally, after 137 years, Hawai‘i-born Civil War veteran, Private J. R. Kealoha, will have a tombstone on his unmarked grave
in O‘ahu Cemetery. In a marker dedication ceremony, Kealoha will be honored for his ser-
vice in the 41st Infantry Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops.
Elks are welcome to attend the dedication ceremony Saturday, October 25, 2014, 10:00-
11:00 a.m., O‘ahu Cemetery, 2162 Nu‘uanu Avenue.
The program will include an outline of Pvt. Kealoha’s military service, the story of how his
burial site was found, a summary of the service of Hawai‘i-born men who served in the
American Civil War, and the efforts to bring recognition to their service. A unit of Civil
War re-enactors will provide military honors to end the program. Memorial lei placement
by the community is encouraged.
Private Kealoha represents dozens of Native Hawaiians whose service in the Civil War was
largely forgotten for nearly 150 years. In 2010, Lodge 616 was among the spon-
sors of a plaque at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific recognizing their
service. Pvt. Kealoha’s marker and the planned honors are partial payment on the
debt we owe to all the Hawai‘i men who served in a foreign war when they were
not obligated to do so.

A lot of fun
things going on in
the Lodge, and lots
to look forward to.
This is my favorite
time of the year. As
my wife calls it, the
“BER”months.
September,
October,
November & December.
September we had a visit from the CHEA
President Floyd “Skip” Henke and his wife
Karen. It is always a pleasure for me to show
off our Lodge to visiting Elks and dignitaries.
We have much to be proud of.
October is ENF Month, and our Esteemed
Loyal Knight & ENF Chairman Andy
Watson and his committee have put together
a wonderful and exciting event scheduled for
Friday, October 10, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Please plan to attend this event. You will be
energized by the wonderful program and
have an opportunity to learn more about The
Elks National Foundation and the charities
that it supports. Scholarships, Hoop Shoot,
Veterans Service, Drug Awareness and
Community Grants. Come one, Come all.
Bring the Keiki, as there will be fun for all.
November: “Calling All Veterans”
The annual Veterans Day luncheon will be
held again on November 11 in the Lodge
room from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A Patriotic

the same as last year, only $30.00. We hope
all our veterans will attend. It is our way of
saying “Thank you for your service to our
country.” This event has proven to be one
you won’t want to miss. Don’t delay.
Veterans call or email your reservations. We
look forward to seeing you.

brief synopsis of their writings
at our September Kupuna meeting.
Our September meeting was held on the
evening of September 11. As part of our talk
story time Stan Sokoloski shared with us his
9/11 story. As the Army’s Regional Director
for the Pacific Region Stan was the highest
ranking Army civilian in Hawaii. As such, he
was scheduled to attend a meeting in the
Pentagon on September 11, 2001. The day
before the meeting it was discovered that the
conference room, located on the West side of
the Pentagon, had been double booked.
Stan’s group volunteered to move their meet-
ing across the street to the Doubletree Hotel.
At 9:37 a.m. that fateful Tuesday morning
American Airlines flight
#77 crashed into the West side of the
Pentagon killing 125 people in the building
including all who were in the conference
room originally booked for Stan’s meeting.
The devastated area has been rebuilt and the
room is now a chapel. In the chapel is a book
containing the names of all the people who
lost their lives there that day.
PER Keliinui also shared with us his
poignant memories of the Pearl Harbor attack
and how watching pictures of the smoke
rising from the collapsed WTC buildings
reminded him of when he was a young boy
watching from the branches of a mango tree
as planes with big red circles flew overhead
towards the smoke rising from the wreckage
of Pearl Harbor.
Two days we must never forget. This is
part of the Kupuna legacy.
We also look to the future. Kupuna
anticipate joining in the Prince Kuhio Parade
next March. We will be decorating a trolley
with floral arrangements. Kupuna gained
experience in parade participation and
protocol by helping the Prince Kuhio
Hawaiian Civic Club decorate the Royal
Court Float for the Aloha Week Parade.
In future articles we will be publishing
more of the Kupuna talk story memories
shared by our members. If you wish to share
a memory of your childhood or of a
significant event you witnessed, you can
come to a Kupuna meeting, or send a copy of
your story to [email protected]. Don’t do
email? - leave a copy at the front desk,
Attention: Kupuna.
Next Kupuna meeting 5 p.m.. Thursday,
October 9, 2014.

SAFETY AT 616
EKAHI PALEKANAThe Lodge Safety Committee, comprised
of Club Manager George Moniz, Facilities
Manager Kendall Ford, Chef Robert Goya,
Trustee George West, and other Board
members, as subject matter deems
appropriate, meets regularly on the first
Monday of the month. Quarterly, there is
representation from human resources
provider, Altres, at which time a
walk-through safety inspection is conducted.
Items commonly and continually addressed
are slip/fall hazards throughout the
member-trafficked areas of the facilities, as
well as staff and crew work areas, especially
the kitchen. Experience documents that most
work-related employee injuries occur in the
kitchen. Chef Goya has been particularly
attentive to providing pro-active crew
training. Chef Goya also regularly schedules
third-party food safety audits to insure
compliance with industry standards and
practice. The maintenance department, led
by Kendall Ford, supports Chef Goya with
routine preventive maintenance procedures
on major food storage equipment, while the
House Committee and the Board of Directors
support the effort through timely equipment
replacement as needed.
A major capital expenditure project in the
kitchen currently being planned is
replacement of the exhaust fan which is
exhibiting signs of failure. Age and advanced
corrosion damage dictate replacement rather
than repair. The existing exhaust system,
exiting the roof adjacent to the neighboring
property and a source of noise complaints,
will be replaced with a more efficient
scrubber system, eliminating the roof top
annoyance while concurrently allowing
removal of interior ceiling encumbrances.
Another area requiring a high level of
attention from the maintenance staff is the
parking lot. Rubbish clean -up, tree
trimming, uneven surfaces from exposed tree
roots, parking bumper maintenance, stall
stripping, all combine to require continuous
attention. Improperly parked vehicles add to
the hazards.
In the current month fire extinguisher
inspection is scheduled and a safety training
class focusing on (1) proper lifting
techniques to avoid back injury and (2)
ladder usage, will be conducted by Altres.
Member and guest behavior throughout the
facility, but particularly in the pool area
requires constant vigilance from staff.
Enjoy the Club, but be thoughtful, watch
the children, obey pool rules and respect
direction given by staff.
The Lodge is for all to enjoy….safely!

ENF Gratitude Grant News - “Purple Pillow Power”On August 12, 2014, a presentation at the Lodge meeting was held to honor the Parents and
Children Together Organization (PACT), who maintain and operate domestic violence shelters
on the island.
Our Lodge’s Gratitude Grant Award from the Elks National Foundation (ENF) was used to
purchase pillows, linen and a $675.00 donation check for the shelter’s operation. The shelters
provide support to between 500 - 1000, women and children who transition through the shelters
while awaiting a safe and livable environment.
Our Gratitude Grant project coined a new name “Purple Pillow Power”, in observance of the
color purple which is associated with Domestic Violence Awareness and our own Lodge’s
colors.
Our Lodge continues to
uphold the ENF Mission
which is to help Elks build
stronger communities. We
fulfill this pledge by investing
in communities where Elks
live and work, funding projects
that improve the quality of life
in Elk communities.

What’s New at the
Elks National Foundation - ENF
The Elks National Foundation had a great time in the Big Easy during Convention! The ENF
met Elks from across the country, connected with Elks scholars, hosted successful sessions, and
premiered films about ENF programs. Our ER Augie Rey Fernandez and Leading Knight Hiram
Keliipio were among the officers and members who attended the convention. But, now’s not the
time to take it easy! In the fall, the ENF will be sending each Lodge a DVD of Midday, the Elks
scholar show from Convention and all of the ENF’s new films are also posted online. Learn
More: Visit www.youtube.com/ElksNationalFndn to watch the ENF’s newest films.
The 2015 Most Valuable Student and Legacy Awards scholarship contests start in September.
This year, the Elks National Foundation will award 250 Legacy Awards of $4,000 to children
and grandchildren of dues-paying Elks and 500 Most Valuable Student scholarships of up to
$50,000. New in 2014-15, Legacy Awards recipients will engage in service with the Elks to
receive the following year’s scholarship funds.
Our Lodge this year was awarded a Gratitude and a Promise Grant each worth $2,000.00. The
Gratitude Grant was used to purchase pillows, bedding linen and a monetary contribution to help
support domestic violence shelters on Oahu. The Promise Grant will be used to provide ocean
education to underprivileged pre-teens and children of active duty military parents who are
serving in our country’s armed forces.
In 2014-15, the GER’s per-member-giving goal remains at $4.60. Once our Lodge meets this
goal, we’ll be eligible to apply for future $2,000 Gratitude Grants and use this Gratitude Grant to
meet the local needs on our Lodge’s community. Our current Lodge’s per-member-giving is at
$.34 cents . . . . . WE CAN DO BETTER! Please help by making a donation on-line at
www.elks.org/ENF or with our Lodge secretary.

KUMULOKAHI CORNERALOHA Elks!!!
Saturday August 17, crack of dawn on Kailua Beach. The
first race of the distance season is set to take place Lanikai
Canoe Club’s Duke Kahanamoku Long Distance Race.
Paddlers & their families gather on the beach to take part in
the blessing of a brand new Sonny Bradley “Lightning”… the
newest of Elks 616 fleet.
The name is to be “Heiheikala”… chasing the sun. This name is significant as it
reminds Uncle Eben of his early canoe racing days as a child. And it will be a good
name for our new canoe, as the Elks 616 chase the sun in every distance race for
many days to come.
Big Mahalos to Uncle Eben Kalaau & his ohana!!!!
This day was also historic in National Elks history as we congratulate the first
women’s crew in Elkdom history to compete during the Long Distance Season!!!
The Heiheikala was like a dream in the water, as the Kumulokahi Men’s 40 placed 3rd right behind Kailua & Hui Nalu, a very tough division.

MANAGER’S
SPOTLIGHTAloha Nui Loa to the entire membership of
Lodge 616! Well, it is October and that
means two things: October Fest and
Halloween. Now that is exciting!!! Chef
Robert Goya, who is, and I bet you didn’t
know this, is half Japanese and half German,
just kidding, is preparing a great October
Fest menu which will be served in the Dining
room; and of course we will have German
Music as well, so it is going to be a great
night. It is a “must come down and join us”
kind of evening. This will be held on October
fifth.
Now for Halloween, this year it is going to
be on a Friday, so what we are going to do is
have three different contests. (1) Bring down
a CARVED pumpkin for the “Best Looking
Carved Pumpkin” contest. (2) “Keiki
Costume Contest” for best costume, and do
not forget the Kumulokahi haunted house for
the Keiki that is always a blast. Then (3) an
Adult costume contest. There will be great
prizes and great fun!!
Well, this one is going to a short one, but
do not forget to check your calendar to see
what celebrations you want to hold at the
Elks Club: Christmas parties, birthday cele-
brations, wedding, redoing your vows, one-
year birthdays, and anything else you can
think of celebration you can come up with.
Please call George Moniz at 922-9238.
616 SCHOLARSHIPMahalo to our Members!
Thanks to all of you who donated to the
Scholarship Fund through your annual
membership renewal. To date, through your
generosity, we have raised an additional
$7,100! Again, from all of us on the
Scholarship Committee, mahalo nui loa for
your contribution, it has made a difference!
The Most Valuable Student 2015
competition is kicking off and, once again,
we look forward to presenting awards to
deserving and extremely gifted graduating
seniors. Along with Legacy and Emergency
Educational Grants these are the cornerstones
of the ENF Scholarship program.
Vocational awards, among others, are
administered through CHEA, and offer other
paths individuals can pursue to continue their
personal and professional development. For
more information on these, and many other
programs, visit Elks.org or CHEA-elks.org.
Carl Schwarm
Chairman, Scholarship Committee
This is your Club Manager saying “thank
you” for joining us at the Club, and always
stop me and say “Hello” so I can get to know
each and every one of you.

MEMBER SURVEY
REPORTAloha Honolulu Elk Members,
In August the Board of Directors requested
member input on prioritizing certain phases
of the Master Plan construction. A total of
243 of our 3102 members responded. The
results indicated there is high interest in the
fitness center. As the Board continues to
determine the complexities of this long-term
project, it has become apparent that the most
crucial phase is the kitchen, in large part due
to current conditions and code compliance.
As we compiled our members’ input via the
survey, the Board is working on phasing in
the kitchen, while simultaneously planning
the fitness center and dining
room/lounge/lobby phases. The entire
project will necessitate City and County
Permits which will require months to
process. We are working with our design
consultants to ensure the construction
sequence is cost-efficient and minimizes
disruption to the Lodge operations and to our
members.
We thank the members who shared their
views. The Lodge Master Plan renovation is
a multi-year project and the Board will
continue to keep our members informed of
the progress.
Mahalo!

ELKS 616
SENIOR FAIROn September 8, 2014, Honolulu Elks
Lodge 616 held a luncheon in our Lodge
Hall to honor 2 recipients for their more then
15 years of charitable work out in the
community as well as within our Elks #616
Lodge.
Bertha Naho’opi’i, wife of late Elk
member, Sam Naho’opi’i, began the Gi
goong exercise class for seniors, or anyone
with interest, back in the early 2000’s.
Throughout the years, Bertha and her Gi
goong class raised thousands of dollars for
the Elks Major Project. Retired for years now
and with the assistance of her walker, Bertha
continues preparing the lodge room for Gi
goong class each Monday morning.
Larry Fukunaga, dance band leader and
floor show director of his musical group,
EBB TIDES, which he founded in 1967,
faithfully makes his way to entertain many of
our Senior residents of Adult Care Centers,
Rest Homes, etc. in the community. Larry’s
charitable works include a number of fund
raisers for Honolulu Elks #616 by having his
group and performers entertain from the
heart. A non-Elk and well beyond 80 years of
age, Larry’s days start and end with a Senior
Activity Center each day.
Hats off to Bertha Naho’opi’i and Larry
Fukunaga.

Mahalo for your Support
of the Major Project! The Major Project fundraiser concluded
with the drawing of the winning tickets on
August 30 during the Member Appreciation
Day that was held in our Club. The true
winners, however, are the children of Hawaii
who participate in our Speech Therapy
Program that is funded through the
generosity of our members who donate to the
Major Project. On hand for the drawing was
one of our therapists, Hedley Uetake, and our
theme child and her family. Kutmaster Spaz
served as our host and entertained the crowd
with his humor and games.
A big mahalo goes out to the Major Project
committee and especially to our volunteers
who hosted our theme family, sold drawing
tickets, coordinated the Scavenger Hunt and
provided free hot dog combos to every
member in attendance. They are: Bobbe,
Emmy Lou, Diane, Jan, Sheri, Delorese,
JoAnn, Jeff, Christi, Deb and Andy. We
must also recognize the excellent assistance
we received from our club managers Ben
Dowling and George Moniz, Chef Robert
Goya and his staff in the kitchen, and the
help from our Lodge Secretary’s staff –
Keith, Teru, Chris, Lisa and Stella.
But most of all, we thank all of you – our
members who gave generously to the Major
Project by buying drawing tickets, making
direct donations when you paid your dues, or
by making donations through the various
groups that exercise, paint, play bridge and
entertain in our Club. Although the final
numbers are not yet in, we are certain that
this year’s donations will prove that “Elks
care, Elks share”.
And The Winners of
The Opportunity Drawing Are:
Grand Prize ($1,000.00): Ron Fitzgerald
2nd Prize ($500.00): Radford Park
3rd Prize ($250.00): Nola Faria
