Case Study gtgtgt
The case study below has been kindly contributed by Lee Wallace who is an environmental consultant at Arup
ldquoEnvironmental Consultancy is a diverse and broad area to
work within The role often entails undertaking a multitude of
assessments including Geotechnical Desk Studies Heritage
Assessments Preliminary Ecological Assessments
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and waste management The MAGIC website is frequently the first port of call in
terms of data collation for preliminary reports and desk based assessment
The interactive mapping tools and data download options provides a large database of environmental and landscape
baseline eg habitats statutorynon-statutory land use designations etc Ordnance Survey maps aerial images and distance
calculators are regularly utilised features as they provide an understanding of the site and surrounding landscape context
This is also a valuable feature when considering habitat configurations and the location of protected sites
The following case studies demonstrate how I typically use MAGIC in my role as an Environmental Consultantrdquo
Case Study 1 ndash Preliminary Environmental Appraisal ndash Flood Defence Scheme
ldquoI have used MAGIC for a Preliminary Environmental Appraisal of a proposed flood defence scheme in Malton Specifically
MAGIC aided the identification of heritage features statutory designations priority habitats and the location of issued
European Protected Species licenses within a 2km site buffer The lsquoIdentifyrsquo feature tool allowed further information to be
gathered about the nearby designations and heritage feature including the full legal citation which ensured a comprehensive
understanding of local sensitive receptors
Information on local issued European Protected Species licenses and priority habitats was critical for highlighting potential
locations of resting breeding and hibernation sites This data combined with external ecological records from the National
Biodiversity Network enabled a preliminary ecological assessment to be formulated
The ability to link multiple data sources and identify sensitive environmental receptors was critical to inform the design of the
flood defence and the need for subsequent more detailed environmental studiesrdquo

SSSI Units and Nitrate Vulnerable Zones
Case Study 2 ndash Environmental Inception Report (EIR) ndash Highways Scheme
ldquoArup produced an EIR to identify the high level
environmental constraints risks and features of local
national or international importance within a 30km
study corridor of a proposed new highways scheme
The EIR was utilised to inform and develop the various
route options this also included identify initial
mitigation opportunities
A multitude of environmental parameters were
considered and MAGIC provided an extensive database
to assist with the baseline assessment The assessment
included air quality agricultural land classification
(ALC) ecology visual impacts and the historical
environment A report detailing the baseline and
potential impacts was created and MAGIC data was
imported into an ArcGIS Model to create maps identify
multiple environmental constraints within the study
corridor The model was also utilised during interactive
design workshops when developing the potential
highways routes The data was compatible with various
software and file sharing systems within Aruprsquos internal BIM system This facilitated internal data sharing among various
project teams across multiple offices but also externally with the client
The download options on MAGIC enabled the ArcGIS model to be created as it either directly downloaded from the site or
provided a link to one of the various partner websites that held the data Utilising the website as a central data search engine
increased the speed at which data could be analysed Supplementary information was attached to each data set which could
be accessed instantly and was a key benefit during the design workshops to provide advanced information on the
environmental features and constraints
Aerial images and OS maps were utilised together and MAGIC allows you to zoom in or out at varying scales and swap
between the two mapping styles This was of particular importance to locate potential embankments and undulations to
understand the potential visual impacts which was ascertained from analysing the OS maps at a fine scale which would have
been missed on aerial imagery As a result the varied mapping options enabled a more detailed understanding of
environmental linkages and the wider landscape configuration to be established
In summary within my role MAGIC is an essential lsquogo-torsquo resource The vast repository of data is key to producing
comprehensive and informed environmental baseline assessments The ability to integrate data within GIS systems ensure
environmental receptors are identified early on within the design process or project life This is critical to minimising or
offsetting adverse impacts and protecting the environmentrdquo

to assist with the baseline assessment The assessment
included air quality agricultural land classification
