From Sue

LOTE

Feedback from the survey conducted last year involving 79 respondents with some responses still coming in

earlier this year confirmed the following:

The vast majority agreed that Spanish had run its course at Hampton, particularly given that very few

secondary colleges offer Spanish.

The vast majority felt that French or an Asian language would be more suitable as these languages are

more available at the secondary colleges – both government and non-government schools.

Mandarin and Japanese were the two Asian languages specifically mentioned as viable options

Mandarin makes sense because China is now a major trading partner for Australia and also China is an

increasingly popular tourist destination.

There is merit in developing and promoting intercultural understandings and the LOTE program can

genuinely promote this.

The intercultural understandings are also a focus in the National Curriculum and in AusVELS (which is

the Victorian version of the Australian Curriculum).

In 2015, we plan to introduce Mandarin as our language other than English. I have interviewed a couple of

people already who are bilingual and have shown some interest in working at Hampton. Very shortly, I will be

calling for suitably trained and experienced applicants fluent in Mandarin and who have a love of teaching.

The successful applicant will commence in 2015 and will teach classes in P-4. Mandarin will be an additional

option for Years 5/6 who currently choose from Italian, Japanese, French and Spanish.

Children’s Disco

Our 3 discos held last Friday night were all well attended with some very colourful and somewhat interesting

costumes being worn! The two themes of Halloween and/or fluoro were embraced enthusiastically and some

showed ingenuity with costumes and face makeup. The DJ was very adept and very entertaining; he ensured

the children had plenty of fun and variety with the dancing and games. There was a wonderful energy and a lot

of laughter in the hall, I hope that the children enjoyed this experience. I extend my sincere thanks to Kirsty

Hunt and Justine Tuffley who held the reins for this event and did a great job of organising a truly enjoyable

night for the children. Thanks also to the many parents who volunteered on the night to assist with set up and

supervision.

Development of the School Grounds

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, work will commence shortly on the resurfacing of the area between

the oval and the BER building, this will be transformed into a hard court surface which will enable basketball,

netball and other ball games to be played. The scope of works is contained in a plan located later in the

newsletter.

2015 BYOD iPad Program in Years 5/6 Information Evening - Wednesday 5 November 6.30-

7.30

Parents of children currently in Grades 4 and 5 are invited to attend the session on the BYOD iPad

Program next Wednesday at 6.30pm to further their understanding of how the iPad fits into the

current educational landscape and how this can be a very useful tool to further develop skills essential

for the 21st century.

The night will include:

An overview of the pedagogy that will be driving the iPad usage

A reflection of the 2014 trial using iPads

Student presentation

Specific information and details on the security, storage, management and purchasing of

applications

Advice on purchasing – if required.

School Transition Program

Our whole school transition program commences very soon. This involves providing an opportunity

for children to meet some of the teachers for the following year, mix with different children other than

those in their current grade and to work in classrooms applicable to the following year. The aim is to

introduce the children gently to some of what they might encounter in the year ahead.

Interestingly, children approach changes differently; some embrace change with enthusiasm and

others can be quite unsure and nervous about the possibility of change, let alone experiencing it.

Having an opportunity to meet with different children of a similar age, and discuss learning with next

year’s teachers builds understanding and familiarity with what they will encounter.

The transition sessions will be held on the following days: Friday 7, 14, 21 and 28 November from

2.00 to 3.00pm and then on Tuesday 9 December, all grades will meet their 2015 teacher from 2.00 to

3.00pm.

2015 Classes

Very shortly, teachers will commence work on organising the classes for 2015. We aim to create

classes that are balanced, homogenous and happy. Careful consideration is given to a number of

factors when placing children into grades. These include:

total number of boys and girls

personality

behaviour

academic ability

friendships

other children with whom they work well etc.

Next year we are likely to have 28 classes with 651 children to place. Please note: it is not possible

or practical to take requests from parents regarding specific teachers. However if a parent has a

concern that relates to the welfare or wellbeing of their child, this may be put in writing and sent to

me.

Exciting News

Congratulations go to Fallon Page-Levett, class teacher of Prep C River Red Gums who is pregnant

with her first child. Fallon will continue teaching her current prep class for the remainder of the year

and hopes to be well enough to resume for the first few weeks of 2015. I extend my best wishes to

Fallon and her husband Nathan at this very exciting time.

NUDE FOOD DAY

On Thursday the 30th of October the E-Team will be organizing

for the whole school to take part in a Nude Food Day. What

would happen is everyone will dress up in the colours of their

favourite fruit or vegetable. For example, banana would be

yellow. There will be no bins in the yard on that day, so you

cannot bring any rubbish at all. That means no fruit juice boxes, no chip packets, no glad

wrap. We are doing this because the rubbish doesn’t look good in the yard. It goes down

through drains, storm water and is blown by the wind and harms sea life.

We are holding a competition for whoever makes the best nude food lunch. You can enter by

putting a photo of your best nude food lunch in a box located in the office. The deadline is

Wednesday the 29th of October. We will decide who has the best nude food lunch. The winner

will get a lunch box and will be announced on the day.

Examples of Nude Food containers:

Parents and kids, we’re really counting on your support to make this a successful day.

Yoga for children Yoga for children is now a very popular practise. Yoga has many wonderful benefits such as

relaxing the mind. The mind is the body’s most powerful tool. Yoga for children can help

increase a child’s ability to focus and concentrate, and also teaches them how to use breathing

exercises to control their emotions and relax and meditate. In the fast paced world we live in

and all the electronic gadgets we have, the mind is constantly on the go. Yoga can slow the

mind down and clear thoughts.

Children can receive fantastic benefits from yoga such as stress and pain relief. It can improve

circulation and also assist with better body alignment.

Yoga practitioners believe yoga can help build resilience, self- confidence and strength. It can

enhance the wellbeing of children through movement, breathing imagination and having fun.

Yoga is said to rejuvenate young minds, creating happy and confident kids.

There is a yoga program in Bayside (3 Livingstone St, Highett, 0423302680) called Kindness

Kids Yoga. They run classes on a Saturday morning for children.
