All aboardChildren arrive with toys for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society at Port Haney Station on Saturday. Students from Westview secondary volunteered their time to collect new, unwrapped toys, as well as non-perishable food items the Christmas Hamper Society. Return tickets aboard the train were handed out in exchange for each toy donation. The train also stopped at Maple Meadows and Pitt Meadows stations. In all, 424 toys were collected for the Christmas Hamper Society, while $175 was received, as were 57 items of food. So far, 600 families and singles have registered for with the Christmas Hamper Society, with one more sign-up date remaining, this Saturday,

11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the office at the Albion Fairgrounds on 105th Avenue in Maple Ridge. The next Santa Train will be on Dec. 17.For more information go to http://www.west-coastexpress.com.

The CP Rail Holiday Train will once again chug into Port Haney

Station on Saturday, Dec. 17, raising food, money and awareness for the Friends In Need Food Bank.

The goal of the Holiday Train is to collect food and money for local food banks and to raise awareness in the fi ght against hunger. At each event, the Holiday Train provides a box car stage, a line up of great musical talents and a cor-porate contribution to the local food bank. The com-munity, in turn, is encour-aged to donate food and funds, all of which stays in the community.

Since the program’s in-ception back in 1999, more than $5.6 million and over 2.45 million pounds of food has been collected in Cana-da and the United States.

Last year, the Holiday Train raised $21,113.24 Friends in Need, while 5,500 pounds of food were donat-ed the night of the event.

“Each month, hundreds of people in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are faced with making the very real choice between paying rent or buying food,” said Joanne Olson, executive director of the Friends In Need Food Bank.

“Canadian Pacifi c has be-come an important partner

in supporting these fami-lies in need.”

Headlining the Canadian Holiday Train stage this year is Canadian folk sing-er Valdy, an Ottawa native best known for his hit Play Me a Rock’n’Roll Song.

Joining Valdy will be young Ottawa rockers Brothers Dube, and Cana-dian country music hall of famer Tracey Brown.

River Road, in front of the Billy Miner Pub, will be closed during the event, which begins at 3 p.m. The Holiday Train is scheduled to arrive at 4:15 p.m. Enter-tainment continues until 6 p.m.

once again be serving hot chocolate and hot dogs for everyone who makes a do-nation to the food bank.

“Rumour has it,” Olson said, “that Santa Claus is going to be there, too.”

The 16th annual Operation Red Nose campaign is underway, offering free rides home during the holiday sea-

son to those who are unfi t to drive.Last year volunteers in Maple Ridge and

Pitt Meadows gave 353 rides to party-go-ers, nearly double that in 2008, when the Ridge-Meadows campaign first started.

This year it is expected Operation Red Nose Ridge-Meadows will surpass the 1,000 rides mark and overtake last year’s total to reach 450 rides.

On it first weekend of operation this year, the service gave 47 rides home.

Although the service is free, donations are accepted and 100 per cent of the mon-ey will go to PacificSport Fraser Valley to help local high performance podium sport

athletes in the form of travel and perfor-mance grants and various other support services.

This year the service operates fromOperation Red Nose operates again this

weekend, Dec. 16-17 – from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. – and again on Dec. 31.

This year will be the largest Operation Red Nose campaign to date with services available in 111 host communities in eight provinces across Canada.

The 14th annual Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christ-mas Haven will be held at the ACT again this year.

Everyone is invited to join in the holiday celebration on Dec. 24, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the ACT, located at 11944 Haney Place.

Every year the Christmas Haven brings people to-gether on Christmas Eve to provide a sense of belonging and camaraderie for people who face hardship and a lack of support over the holiday season.

It will be a free, non-de-nominational event that will be wheelchair accessible for people of all ages, ethnicity and socio-economic status.

“The main thing is that everyone is welcome. It’s for anyone,” says organizer Corisa Bell. “It’s to provide a celebration for anyone who doesn’t have family in town or is alone at Christmas.”

This year, the Christmas

Haven has teamed up with the Salvation Army, which will be catering the event.

A free hot turkey dinner will be served during an evening fi lled with musical entertainment, including a Christmas carol sing-a-long.

Children can look forward to crafts and colouring, and face-painting provided by the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society.

Finally, Santa Claus will pay a special visit to hand out a present to everyone.

Bell says the Christmas Haven is planning to serve around 300 people this year, but that there will be extras just in case more people at-tend.

Any leftover food will go back to the Salvation Army and toys will be kept for next year’s Christmas Haven, Bell added.

Since the Salvation Army will be providing the food this year, Bell says instead of

turkey donations, the Haven is looking for cash donations and donations of presents for teenagers and adults, who are often overlooked.

Bell suggests gift cards since teens and adults are hard to buy for, but the Ha-ven will accept any donation.

Until Dec. 31, cash dona-tions will be accepted at both the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows leisure centres, and donation boxes for toys and presents will be located at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre and at Curves in Ma-ple Ridge at 22335 Lougheed Highway.

Volunteers are also needed and require a criminal record check.

Grants for block parties The holiday season is a wonderful time to get together with neighbours and friends. To help out, there are still a few Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services Block Party Grants of up to $100 available to help fund neigh-bourhood gatherings this holiday season. “A neighbourhood block party can be a casual aff air. Christmas carolling pot-lucks, outside gatherings fea-turing hot cider and hot chocolate, gingerbread house parties, cookie exchanges and New Year’s celebrations are all wonderful excuses for bringing neighbours together,” program coordinator Elaine Yamamoto said.Some neighbourhoods also use the occasion to collect contributions for local charities, such as the Friends in

Need Food Bank.“Good neighbours can increase the quality of life where you live by keeping an eye out for you, your family and your property. These are the people who help to create a place that holds memories and tradi-tions of a happy and secure place to live,” Yamamoto said.To be eligible for a grant, a block party must be a family event that is inclusive of all neighbours and alcohol-free.
