Agreeing to waive FERPAWhat is the FERPA Waiver?
◦ Since FERPA is a complex law, we want to provide some key information before you respond to the FERPA waiver question.
◦ 1. How does FERPA relate to your college application?◦ FERPA gives you the right to review confidential letters of recommendation
under certain circumstances IF:
◦ You are enrolled in college and that college saves the recommendations for enrolled students, OR
◦ You are 18 or older.
◦ 2. In the application you'll be asked if you want to waive this right. Why would you want to do that?◦ Waiving your right lets colleges know that you do not intend to read your
recommendations, which helps reassure colleges that the letters are candid and truthful.
◦ Some recommenders may refuse to write a letter for you unless you waive your rights. Check with your counselor or teachers to see if any of them follow such a policy.
1. Create Common App account
2. Add a school (complete education section)
3. Sign FERPA Release
CommonApp Linking
Non Common App Schools/Coalition
◦ Many colleges have created their own individual applications
that, in most cases, are web-based and can be found via the
school’s undergraduate admissions website.
◦ Just because a school does not accept the Common App does
not mean that they do not accept the transmission of important
documents, like letters of recommendation and academic
transcripts, through Naviance.
◦ When a non-Common App school allows us to submit documents
through Naviance, it is called Direct to Institution. A Direct to
Institution school is designated by this symbol.
◦ When applying to a school through the Coalition Application you
should select “Direct to Institution” in Naviance!
Transcripts
◦ How to get one?
◦ 1: Submit your application to college.
◦ 2: Request transcript in Naviance- College needs to be on “colleges I’m applying to” list
◦ 3. Complete transcript request card in the counseling office
◦ Transcript request card must be completed EVERY time you need a transcript.
◦ Must be requested in writing with your signature.
◦ Card stays on file in the Counseling office so you can always know when and where your transcript was sent.
•What is a transcript?
• Most colleges require an official transcript as part of the application.
• $2 each
• Official vs Unofficial
Requesting Transcripts
Transcript Request Form
Transcripts◦ When?
◦ Each time you submit an
application to a different
college or scholarship
application.
◦ At the end of first semester, if
requested by your college
(this is called a ‘mid-year
transcript’).
◦ FINAL TRANSCRIPT: has a
graduation date on it.
Required by your college as
proof of high school
graduation.
◦ Order this in April/May.
Requesting transcripts◦Requesting transcripts will
be started through
Naviance and completed
in the counseling office.
◦ You can’t just do one!!!!
Counselor Recommendation◦ Know if it is required by the college or not
◦ If it is not required, DO NOT send one
◦ Three items are needed for a counselor recommendation:
1. Student Senior Questionnaire (Found under ABOUT ME tab
in Naviance)
2. Resume (this can be uploaded in the journal in Naviance
or created in Naviance using the resume builder)
3. Once all of these items are completed and have been
submitted, please email your counselor and inform them
that everything is completed for a counselor
recommendation. It would be helpful to include
information about which college it is going to and what
their stated deadline is.
◦ Also need to circle Recommendation Letter on Transcript Card!
All documents required for a
counselor recommendation
must be RECEIVED by your
counselor…………
NO LATER THAN 10
SCHOOL DAYS PRIOR TO
THE COLLEGE DEADLINE.
These items are:
1. Student Senior
Questionnaire
2. Resume
Work Backwards to Determine All
Your Deadlines:Example:
◦ Application deadline for the college is: Oct 15.
◦ Counselor recommendation request deadline : Oct 1
(10 school days prior). This is the Tuesday after our Fall Break.
This means you have:
1) submitted the application to the college
2) completed your senior questionnaire and resume
3) e-mailed your counselor to inform them all materials are complete
by Oct 1 for an October 15 deadline.
Teacher Recommendations
◦Ask for a teacher recommendation in person
before adding their name to any application
◦ Give your recommender plenty of advance notice
◦ Follow any procedures your recommender may
have in place for letters
Request teacher recommendations from bottom of “college I’m applying to” screen in Naviance
Teacher Recommendations Continued..
IMPORTANT: ASSIGN YOUR TEACHERS TO SPECIFIC
SCHOOLS, NOT “All Applications”
-It is your responsibility to research which schools
require a letter of recommendation on their website.
-If they do not ask for a letter of recommendation,
they do not use it in the admissions process. DO NOT
ASK YOUR TEACHER FOR ONE IF THIS IS THE CASE!
**You can also track the status of your teacher
recommendations. The student must follow up to
ensure that these are sent!
