I Became a Priest &

after reading a passage from the Bible, I had an

Epiphany and changed my view on enslaving Native

Americans.

I believed Aristotle’s theory that it was

natural for some people to be masters and some

people to be slaves.

I enslaved Native Americans in the New

World.

I blamed Injustice on GREED & said, “The reason why

Christians have killed and destroyed an infinite

number of souls is that they have been moved by the

wish for gold & their desire to enrich themselves.”

I said, the Indians were “inferior to the

Spaniards just as children are to adults, women to men…and

as apes to men”

I persuaded King Charles of Spain, the grandson of Isabella & Ferdinand, to enact laws against

enslaving Native Americans.

(laws had little effect)

I wrote books detailing the atrocities against Native Americans like “Tears of the Indian.”

My Father bought me a slave after returning from a journey with

Columbus.

I said, “The Indians are like

children who need someone to tell them

what to do.”

I wrote, “To these quiet lands, endowed with such

blessed qualities, came the Spaniards like the most cruel tigers, wolves, and

lions, enraged with a sharp & tedious hunger.”
