settings worked fine for us. For your money you’ll find an Intel i3- 350M processor running at 2.26GHz, 4GB of RAM, an Nvidia GeForce 310M mobile graphics chip and a 320GB hard drive, so plenty of bang for your buck. The 15.6” LED LCD screen runs at a native resolution of 1366x768. Battery- wise, you can expect to get around 3 hours from the 5745PG between charges with medium use. There’s HDMI and VGA out, as well as four USB ports, so plenty of room for your extra devices and displays to get involved. Screen quality was bright and crisp, and perhaps the only disappointment is the sound quality from the tiny speakers. Distinguishing between laptops in such a crowded market is difficult to do,, but this is definitely challenging near the top of the table – decent looks, a touchscreen display, and a useful level of performance are all in its favour. The battery life isn’t breath-taking, but there are very few negatives with the 5745PG. The trackpad is functional and the default sensitivity Acer laptops can be relied upon to be well-built and good-looking, and the stylish 5745PG continues the trend. Each key on the keyboard is raised up and separated from its fellows, an approach we’ve not seen before and which made a pleasant change. Overall we found the keyboard a touch cramped – perhaps sacrificing the numeric keypad to give some of the other keys The Dell M301z will win a lot of fans with its stylish, curved looks that give the appearance of something that costs more than it does. It’s a laptop that manages to hit a sweet spot between performance and price, and it’s suitable for all of the basic computing tasks – Web browsing, photo editing and office applications will all be taken in its stride, so for students or an everyday home laptop it’s ideal. The emphasis here is on thinness and lightness, and it’s aimed firmly at those who’ll be on the move a lot, which is why there’s no DVD drive. It’s just about light enough to hold in one hand, and the battery lasted us for just under four hours, which is decent without being outstanding. As is normal with Dell, there are a number of configurations available from £529 the website (check there for the latest deals), and our review unit came with an AMD Turion II Neo K625 dual-core processor running at 1.50GHz, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive and Windows 7 Home Premium. The K625 isn’t a particularly powerful CPU, but it is very power efficient, and the M301z has its eye on long battery life rather than spectacular benchmarking results. The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4225 chip will give you slightly more oomph than an integrated solution to help with those HD video clips and games. There’s a HDMI port tucked around the back under a cover, as well as three USB 2.0 sockets (one of which doubles as an eSata port). The trackpad was smooth and accurate, and we had no problems with the well-designed keyboard (although a small amount of flex was noticeable if you begin bashing away in earnest). The M301z is an impressive machine, as long as your performance needs aren’t too demanding.
