Memorial, William HolzhauerWilliam John Holzhauer 1955 – 2014

William Holzhauer, with his wifeTammy Rimes, entered the wonderfulworld of Peruvian Pasos back in1998, with the purchase of their firsthorse, Vistoso de Oro BSN. Whilethey only had one horse with theirdaughter as a junior rider, William andTammy jumped wholeheartedly in thisbreed, participating in shows andevents for both the SCPPHC and LosAmigos Clubs. At horse shows, theyserved as the hospitality team, andtheir big homemade breakfasts be-came legendary. Later, with their ownmoney, lots of ideas and energy, and

donations from others, they founded the PeruvianPaso Promotion Project with Gigi de Solar and JoyRedman to spread the word of the Peruvian Pasothrough a nationwide campaign of advertisements, articles and television videos. Using William’smarketing and sales background, this small team ofdedicated individuals truly raised the awareness ofthe breed. In recent years, William was the winemaker of theirHacienda de las Rosas Winery, with a goldenPeruvian Paso featured on every label. Williamhelped take their love of horses, with their businessof wine, and created a successful wine tasting roomin Old Town, San Diego, and recently opened theirRamona winery and horse ranch tasting room. Those who come to taste wine learned just as much

about Peruvian Paso horses. Known for his tall stature and cowboy hat, William was friendly with everyone…from the owners of the top ranches to the stable boy feeding late at night. In fact, William called himself the“stable boy” of his ranch. His last ride on his horse, Sombra was just a couple of months ago. He was a bit unsteady, but his trustyhorse gave him a wonderful ride with Tammy walking beside him. His grin was big as he dismounted andsaid “Life is Good.” William’s Celebration of Life was held on January 10th, his birthday. Thousands ofpeople have reached out to express their sympathy and condolences to this man who touched so many.Tammy says that she learned 3 great lessons from her husband:1) Wear the Good Underwear. Use Your Best Dishes. Ride a Peruvian Paso Horse, if you can. In otherwords, stop waiting for the future to live your life. Whatever is on your bucket list or the place you alwayswanted to visit…go for it! Take advantage of the best that life has to offer.2) Helping Others is more important than making money. For anyone who knows my husband, you know thatmarketing and selling was in his blood. But when he operated the family business, he would say that it wasjust as important for us to share what we have, and help others with our resources, to hire a student, donateto charities, sponsor artists, and bless people with what we have to offer.3) Keep Dreaming! When he was in a Vietnam POW camp, William said that he dreamed of a house withround door, a fountain and beautiful roses…and we eventually found it to create our Hacienda de las Rosas!During his last month in the hospital, William asked for a notepad to design a new rose and hydroponicgarden. For a man who could not walk or sit up very long, he was still planning projects and dreaming biggoals.William was bigger than life, and approached everything with gusto. Like the speech given by every greatcoach in any famous sports movie, he or she tells the players to give it all, leave it all on the field at the end ofthe game. The best coach will say that no matter what the score at the end of the game, if you have givenyour all, then you have given your best. That was William Holzhauer.

Ranch News Parade NewsI would love to submit my wife Lori Harmon for a newsletter story. Lori is theFounder & Director of a non-profit 501 (c) (3) Equine Alliance Youth Foundationin Paso Robles California serving children & teenagers from foster care, juvenile& mental health services free of charge. Lori trains & rehabili-tates horses from abuse & neglect to provide financial supportfor kids in her programs. She is very giving, selfless & a hardworking lady that everyone in our community adores. She isalways giving from her heart no matter what comes her way &is always doing for others. She has changed so many kids livesaround that have been on the wrong path. The past few years Lori was working hard to provide transi-tional housing, Equine Assisted Therapy and support for kidsthat have no place to turn to when they age out of foster careas they are without support or resources. The majority of foster kids have zero assistance when they "Age Out" of fos-ter care. These kids try to navigate the system on their own with no supportor guidance. My wife is always coming to their aid assisting with housing, financialhelp & guidance. No matter what a kids situation is my wife always supports them, be-lieves in them & loves them unconditionally! On September 8, 2014 my wife suffered a traumatic brain injury & stroke from a TBhorse bucking her off that she was training dressage to help raise funding for thesekids. My wife never asks for anything for herself & it would be great if you could makea dream come true for the kids that she loves & worries about by bringing awarenessto the Equine Alliance Youth Foundation. Hopefully people will find it in their heartsto sponsor a child or donate to the organization.Sincerely,Tony Harmon www.equinealliance.org

More Ranch NewsFrom Patty Pignotti, ColoradoThis note is to acknowledge all those folksin California who were so helpful in my search, pur-chase, showing & breeding of KBK Dona An-drea. Everyone knew I was very green, yet they spentso much time with me. It took many months to go toall the ranches; looking, riding and learning along theway. There was Danell at Piloto Shadow Ranch,Janic at Paseo del Traza, Jorge at the JorgeValenzuela Training Center, Terry at Rancho de laFlorecita, and Tony at D Ranch. I took her hometo Colorado, and then, returned to California whereshe was bred, and shown. I exhibited her at theSCPPHC Double Championship Show at GalwayDowns, near Temecula. So many helpful words ofencouragement; Danell saying "breath Patty, breath";Joline telling me I just need to relax; the Judge, LuchoDapelo telling me to talk to her as that really helps &it did; Barbara saying I should use two hands; andFrank saying "sit up, you are leaning back".

Los Amigos Peruvian Paso Club NewsGeneral Meeting Minutes for Dec. 13, 2014President Vanita Mann opened the General Membership Meeting at 2:56 pm.Great turn out for the meeting with 17 members, 3 juniors and five invitedguests. Vanita went on to thank Andrew Andreasen and Kerrie Justice forhosting this years’ meeting/party.Vanita told the group that our Board started the year with five members, butJeannie Mattiussi had to resign due to a new job commitment. Jeannie did helpout the show with a great donation of all the Ch of Ch awards for the Los

Amigos part of the show. Our thanks again to Jeannie for her donation. Your other missing member from the meetingis Kelly who does a super job for the club with our web site, premium and the Showcase for 2014. Your other threemembers worked hard also to keep your club up and running. Debbie Pye is also part of the team of Los Amigos, doing a super job on our Newsletter. Go to the club web site to view. Thanks also to Vanita for printing out the FallNewsletter for the members at the meeting.Vanita reported that our show in October was a success, but due to the high cost of rooms in Santa Barbara, theBoard made a decision to try another venue. The only one with any available weekends that did not interfere withother shows was the weekend of May 30-31 in VenturaVanita gave Christina Salinas a huge thank you for all the work as the she does the work for Treasurer AndresSalinas. The club broke even on the show itself, but failed to put enough funds back into the accounts for the otherannual expenses we support or that we must pay, such as insurance and fees to NAPHA for the show approval. Westarted the year with $12, 900.00 and ended the year with around $8,500.00. We still have a few outstanding bills tocollect on the SHOWCASE and other show items, which will bring us up to about $10,000.00.Before continuing with the open discussion session with the members, Vanita opened up our annual board ofdirectors nominations: Nominated: Vanita Mann, Andres Salinas, Ron Brown, Kerrie Justice, Kelly Powers, andJoline Hahn. Vanita clarified that our bylaws state you must be a member of NAPHA, Los Amigos, and have aNAPHA registered horse, state or country not mentioned, therefore Kelly may be nominated and voted onto theboard. Nominations closed, and ballots passed out to Los Amigos members to vote for five. Danell Adams wasasked to count the ballots.Vanita then opened up the general meeting for discussion on items the membership and Board wished to discuss.Rosie Heffley asked to be first as she needed to leave shortly, She brought up the Fiesta Show to be held May 8, 9,& 10. She asked for a count of who in the room would be attending. Most of the members stated they would bethere, with a few concerns: one is our juniors need their own high point awards. Rosie stated we needed to sponsorthem ourselves and Vanita and Kerrie both agreed they would be sure our juniors would be sponsored with awardsfrom within our group. Second was the use of the dome arena, Merlene Sutalo stated we want in the dome, notoutside arenas, and Rosie says she will try to make that work, but the Andalusians are in competition for the dome.As our Peruvian numbers have been down the last few years, we could lose out on the dome. That does not set wellwith the Peruvian exhibitors. The judge for Fiesta will be Lionel Peralta, and the Saturday night event will bedownsized for 2015.Vanita then opened up the discussions on the show in Ventura. The cost there is less all around, rooms and venue. But the down side is only 80 horse stalls available. Vanita and Andres both visited the site, and were impressed withthe improvements to the arenas and grounds. The Board has the proposal of costs already from Ventura and we willlock up the details this coming week. Our judge will be Luis Pablo Vasquez Diaz. It was questioned using a “B” ratedjudge, and Joline stated that it is a small loss on extra points as we still get points for approved Show Steward andDrug Free. It was questioned why the club does not use available Judges, that Los Amigos has never used anAmerican judge...which shows a lack of support. We have many good judges who have spent time and money to gothru the process and should be acknowledged.NOTE: After the meeting, Kelly clarified that Luis Pablo Vasquez Diaz is the A list Judge for our 2015 LosAmigos Show.On the Drug Free show, CA is only state that has the state administrating the tests on drugs. It was stated we needto send a letter complaining that we seldom get a tester to our shows. It was noted other states can do at a largeexpense to their shows, a blood test. One exhitor stated no one would be allowed to do a blood test during the showon her horses.

Los Amigos Peruvian Paso Club News (continued)General Meeting Minutes for Dec. 13, 2014 (continued)Next the discussions turned to other events Los Amigos is hoping to do in 2015. Thefirst is an ACTHA ride. Vanita has a great location for doing one in Simi Valley, andhad spoken to Jody Childs about doing one with her help. Patty White stated shealready has plans for two in the Norco area, and that if we want to do one, we need toget dates picked and requested into ACTHA quick, as the dates are going fast. It wassuggested that this might be one event that both Los Amigos and Southern California

Club could work on together and split the profit. Danell thinks the clubs should co-sponsor more events like theserides and other events.Next up was the discussion suggested by Los Amigos Board to do a breeding clinic and open show at GallowayDowns. That suggestion was well received and it was suggested that both clubs discuss doing one together. BothBoards will discuss this at a later time. The idea is to have a Peruvian Breeding Clinic on one day, and then have anopen to all breeds like Norco does, to make money to pay for the whole two day event. Much discussion was held onhelping improve the breed with better breeding knowledge. Clinics to introduce the breed to others are needed.Joline asked Danell to give us an update on the 2015 National General Meeting and Clinic. Danell announced thatthe dates are March 27, that is a Friday, and the General Meeting will be held at the Embassy Suites in TemeculaCA. There will be a dinner Friday evening included in the charges for the meeting & clinic. On March 28, Saturday, abreeding clinic will be help at Frank and Merlene’s ranch. Rooms rates for the event will be announced in the NAPHAnewsletter coming out shortly, and breakfast is included at the Embassy hotel. Danell also announced that thePeruvian Horse World website now belongs to NAPHA, with a huge thank you to Frank and Merlene Sutalos, Jim andBarbara Alexander, and Larry and Joy Redman.Danell suggested that we need to show our horses in non-traditional tack at open events, to promote our breed to thepublic. It was noted by Patty, Danell, and Joy the seven Saddle and Harness shows in Norco are a great way topromote our breed. And it was also noted that those shows classify our Peruvian tack as part of their Western Attireclasses. That nice jacket Joy was wearing was a hight point award from the Norco Saddle and Harness shows. Pattynoted the Peruvian horses win big at those shows. Joy stated that all Open Shows with other breeds is a great way toexpand our breed.Andres noted that we are losing out new members by not supporting all the shows, and Danell noted that whenshows go down in numbers, we are also losing the quality of horses when shows are down to 28-35 horses. NAPHAis encouraging clubs to join together to do one show, and that a few clubs in the south were joining up to increaseshow numbers, which improves the quality of horses shown.Andres also says that we are losing the social element at our shows, where in Peru and other countries it is a wholeweekend of camaraderie and fun. It is a time where discussions among the owners can discuss the quality of thehorses as to breeding better horses, and have fun and food too. All agreed we have been missing that in recentyears, and Andres is correct that we need to bring that back to our shows and events. Join together as friends andowners. With the meeting coming to an end, Vanita announced the 2015 Board of Directors: Andres, Kelly, Kerrie, Joline andherself, Vanita. The 2015 Board will met for a short meeting. Vanita thanked all for coming and all the sharing ofideas for 2015.Board of Directors Meeting, December 13, 2014Vanita Opened the 2015 newly elected BOD meeting at 4:20 pm.Vanita, Andres, Kerrie and Joline Present.Joline asked Vanita to be President again for 2015, and we agreed that Andres would be our Treasurer again, withKerrie offering to help with use of her accountant for taxes and other items the club needs. Joline to be Secretary,Kerrie to be 1st Vice President, and Kelly to be 2nd Vice President. We agreed that getting Ventura items on thecontract were to be done this coming week. Our old business is the pay out on the Luxury Gelding’s stakes class.Until we had all the information we have not paid it out, It was voted by all to add $500 to the purse, with the $400 inentry fees for a total of $900. Pay out will be as usual: 35% to 1st; 25% to 2nd; 20% to 3rd; and 15% to 4th place. Itwas not in the premium, which is one reason it had not been paid as of now. However that is the usual way LosAmigos pays it, per past premiums. Andres proposed that we agree that 2015 will be $1000 stakes with at least 10entries. We also agreed that the NAPHA clinic suggestion from 2014 to have the Zootecnico classes will be onSunday morning. Meeting was adjouned at 4:45 pm.

NINJA DE REGIONAL

Ninja was born in Grand Junction, Coloradoto the family which now owned the wholeherd. She was born on August 28th, 1993. Ithink that one of the children in the owner’sfamily named her Ninja because of the actionof the front legs that all the Peruvian Pasoshave – termino – and it must have looked likethe movement of a Ninja warrior. She grew up there and when I met her justbefore her 4th birthday, there were two year-lings now in the herd as well. So Ninja had ahappy childhood with her mother, her herd andtwo yearlings that she ran around with andplayed with.So when the couple who owned the herd askedCricket Donoho (a realtor and Peruvian Pasofan and junior judge at the shows) to sell theherd due to a divorce, Cricket told me aboutNinja. At one of the Peruvian Paso shows in

Denver, Cricket said “There’s a little horse in Grand Junction, got yourname all over her.”So I went up to Grand Junction and Cricket took Ninja out of the pas-ture, and cross-tied her in the barn. She did not mind at all. I groomedher and fell in love with her. I had always wanted a horse and alwaystook lessons wherever I lived, but when I rode a Peruvian Paso in thelate 80’s in California, I was hooked. Cricket said that if I wanted tobuy Ninja that she would put her under saddle and in the Peruvian bosalthen I could come out and ride her and that she could trailer her toBoulder where I was living after her training. Ninja had just turned 4(Aug. 28th).When I went back to Grand Junction and went out on a trail ride withher 6 weeks later, she was just perfect. She rode over rocks, throughcreeks and went very nicely in a large group of horses new to her. SoCricket trailered her to Boulder where she had 2 or 3 different boardingsituations until I moved back to Santa Fe in 2002. Ninja attended a 3day Pat Parelli Level One workshop. She has been desensitized to mostthings and is very reliable and sane in all situations. We have done horse camp-ing around Pecos and the Valle Vidal, did a 5 day “Last Outlaw Trail Ride ofthe Century” at the boarder of CO, UT and WY back in “99”, participated inPeruvian Paso demonstrations at El Rancho de los Golondrinas, have donemany Horsemens’ Association rides, worked with Back Country Horsemen andattended a Peruvian Paso show in Denver where she did very well in Perform-ance class. She is very sweet, loves apples and Mrs. Pasture’s horse candy and likes atten-tion. People who know her say she has “angel energy”. Now she is retired (at21 yrs.) due to a ligament injury on a ranch of 50 acres outside of Taos, NM. Ihave had to say “goodbye” but at least she has space, beauty and a small herd!I am so looking forward to visiting your area, finding another small, great mare(or gelding) and participating in all the events that your club offers. I have somuch love and passion for this wonderful breed! I will visit in the Spring!Jacquelyn [email protected] Fe, NM
