LAO GAP is supported by the “Strengthening National Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in Lao PDR Project” under the Lao-Thai-German Trilateral Cooperation.
LAO GAP Fruits and Vegetable Launch and Business Matching
The Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) has
developed and adopted a standard for the national
Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for fresh fruit and
vegetable in line with the ASEAN GAP standard in order
to enhance competitiveness of domestic farmers and
producers and to meet the demand of Lao and ASEAN
consumers.
The Lao Department of Agriculture, officials, inspectors
and pilot farmers have been receiving support from the
Lao Government and the “Strengthening National Good
Agricultural Practices (GAP) in Lao PDR Project,” under
the Lao-Thai-German Trilateral Cooperation, to estab-
lish a trustworthy LAO GAP certification and accredita-
tion system and bring LAO GAP certified agricultural
produce to both domestic and export markets. Through
the project, they have also received technical support
from the Thai Department of Agriculture and the Thai
National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food
Standards.
After more than two years of scheme development, the
LAO GAP inspection and certification system is now in
place and functioning. There are already a number of
pilot farmer groups who have obtained LAO GAP certifi-
cation. At the same time, the Lao Government is pre-
pared to promote LAO GAP standard among farmers,
interested persons and consumers as part of national
preparation for a full integration into the ASEAN Eco-
nomic Community in the near future.
