Some stonecutters
were cutting stone in a quarry. I asked each what he was doing.
The first said,
“I’m cutting a stone.”
The second said, “I am cutting this block of stone to make sure that it’s square, and its dimensions are uniform, so that it will fit exactly in its place in a wall."
The third said,
“I’m
building a
cathedral."
Montmartre, France
Wells Cathedral, England
Cathedrals are incredible testaments to human endeavor…just like the art of writing.
Their grandeur and splendor took centuries to create.
Ulm Cathedral, Germany
Those who
designed them,
those who built
the foundations,
knew for certain
that they would
never see the
finished
masterpiece.
Sagrada Familia, Spain
They knew only that they were creating something
glorious which would speak for centuries to humanity.
Calatrava’s Opera House, Canary Islands

Concession and Rebuttal (Yes, but…)
•Concede and Acknowledge the strongest position for the opposition
•Rebuttal or Refutation
Bow to the other performer but maintain your lead
Concession and Rebuttal • Who would argue against my position?
• Which of their beliefs, values, or morals must I address?
• What would they say against my position on this topic?
• With which of their points do I agree?
• How can I logically counter that point?
• How can I limit the effect of that point? Only under what condition is that point valid?
• What emotional anecdote can I use to counter that point?
• Can I develop an analogy that would effectively counter that point?
David Conlin, Duke Univ. ‘21
