Language Skills And The Multicultural Environment At YCIS Shanghai
Shanghai
Shanghai is one of the most engaging and vibrant cities in
the world. It is becomingincreasingly as influential and cosmopolitan as cities such as
London and New York. Shanghai reflects the impacts of
globalisation, as people from around the world live and work
together.
ShanghaiShanghai has a mix of
cultures and languages which reflect this trend,
such as the Bund, Qibao and the modern Pudong.
YCIS Shanghai is well placed within the heart of
the city to capture this integration of Eastern and
Western influences.
Bilingual Education
While our focus is on the provision of a strong academic education, we also take care to develop the multilingual skills of our students. In our Early Years and pre-school classes we have two teachers: one Chinese and one Western. This ensures that our students can begin learning languages when they are younger and their brains are better suited to it compared to adolescents and adults.
Bilingual Education
The commitment to bilingual education carries on into secondary education. Our international curriculum lessons are taught in English, but all students are required to learn Mandarin, the official language of China. Completing the linguistic foundations built in the pre-school and primary lessons.

Multicultural environment
Global skills
At YCIS Shanghai the students come from over 40 different nations,
which provides a multicultural backdrop.
This benefits the language development of our pupils, as
greater knowledge of other cultures aids the learning of language, which
is naturally embedded within the native cultures.
Language and Culture
YCIS Shanghai has a wide range of extra-curricular days and activities that allow for a more rounded education that complements academic pursuits.
This provides knowledge of the cultures in which languages form greater meaning, such as the students pictured performing Macbeth by English playwright William Shakespeare.
World Classroom
As part of our policy of offering a balanced and internationally focused
education, we run trips for our secondary school students to a range of destinations, where students have both
historical and cultural learning opportunities.
Life-Long Benefits
There are clear benefits to the multilingual and
multicultural education at YCIS Shanghai:
Greater understanding
of different cultures,
languages and traditions
More ability to adapt to the
changes driven by globalisation
