Module 1, Democracy and Peace lasts between 24 and 27 hours. This will be the third lesson of the module after being taught in school problems and how to handle them. Now it is time to make agreements regarding ethical behaviors to live together and promote citizenship in other contexts.

Students know how to write sentences in simple present. They are familiarized with some vocabulary. They know a list of regular and irregular verbs and at least know how to use some of them. In the previous module (9th grade- 4th module), students learned about past, past perfect and conditionals, which are grammar contents that can be used in the middle of the discussions, as well as expressions of advantages and disadvantages. Students should bring some material asked the previous class to work in the writing part (cardboards and markers in groups of 4).

During this lesson (Summer camps) students will learn about modals, especially modal must, which is used to write rules and make agreements. At the end of the module, it is expected that students can write recommendations on subjects of their interest

• Recognizes general and specific information in narrative and descriptive oral and written texts related to subjects of academic interest.

• Identifies basic structures of present tense and modal must.

• Prepares written texts on recommendations on subjects of academic interest.

• Summarizes, with the help of classmates, information about causes and solutions to a conflict among teenagers.

• Values and respects the opinion of others.• Recognizes the importance of language in conflict resolution.

• Recognizes the importance of reading as a skill to promote critical thinking.• Leads discussions about how to behave in specific contexts.• Works collaboratively to make agreements.

WORKSHEET 1SUMMER CAMP

Worksheets and other appendixes

Read the following text and answer the questions below:

Summer camp is a special type of community where kids come together to have fun. Within the camp setting, children develop a sense of independence as they try new adventures away from home. Summer camps are known for providing a safe environment where children gain self-confidence as they learn new skills. Camp is also a place where children develop a variety of social skills (e.g., communication, conflict resolution ability). Campers come together from different parts of the city, the province, the country or even the world to be part of a supportive community. “At camp you work as a team. It builds social capital. It teaches you how to be a good citizen. Camp teaches you how to be successful in life.”Social bonds between campers are often deep and lasting. “Lifelong friendships are made at camp. Supportive networks are created that continue throughout life for some,” Fine says. “Very strong and lasting lessons about how to be a contributing member of a community are made at camp. You can interview people 20 years after they have gone to camp and they will tell you about their experience at camp with great clarity.”
