    Learning Disability, a term proposed by Dr. Samuel Kirk in 1963, describes a group of children who have disorders in development of language, speech, reading,

    and associated skills needed for social interaction

    Speech or Language Impairment A communication disordersuch as stutteringimpaired articulation, a language impairment, or avoice impairmentthat adversely affects a childseducational performance

    Specific Language Impairment Significant limitations in language functioning thatcannot be attributed to deficits in hearing, oralstructure and function, or general intelligence

    Significant language difficulties, usually firstidentified at an early age

    Reading Disordered Failure to learn to read despite at least averageintelligence; intact perceptual abilities; no knownneurological, physical, emotional, or social

    problems; and an adequate opportunity to learn toread
