President: Mrs. Jacqui Jack Dear Parents: Today was our Speech Festival Competition. We decided to divide our finals into two sections; primary and intermediate due to the increased number of students participating. All of the students who participated in our competition today did an amazing job! They were confident, used great expression in their voices and body language, and delivered speeches well above expectations. In speaking with parents after the speeches, they were also so impressed by our young orators. It was a difficult job for our three judges (•Mr. Wicker/Ms. Clapton - LFMSS •Mrs. Jack PAC president and •Braeden Frew LFMSS student), but here are the finalists from today’s competition and their speech topics: Grade 2 and 3 category •Joey Brandt “Hockey” •Ella Woo “How to get picky eaters to eat their vegetables” Grade 4 category •Carter Ingwersen “The fruits of factual labor Grade 5 category •Grace Jerome “Summer camp and why you should go” Well done! These students will now compete in the semi-finals at HD Stafford on April 21st at 9:30 am. Reminders for Parents Many of the local residents have been calling the police and township with traffic complaints recently. Some of the issues have been people parking close to driveways and blocking access as well as the back up on 50th ave waiting to pick up children. I have been talking with our school liaison officer and we are trying to work on some solutions. Please try parking and walking to pick up your children if at all possible. Also, it’s very busy right at dismissal time, but if you delay your pick up by just a few minutes the traffic will be moving and mean less congestion for the roadway. Please note that 1

Dear Parents: Today was our Speech Festival Competition. Jack PAC president and •Braeden Frew LFMSS student), but here are the finalists from today’s competition and their speech topics:

Grade 2 and 3 category

•Joey Brandt “Hockey”

•Ella Woo “How to get picky eaters to eat their vegetables”

Grade 4 category

•Carter Ingwersen “The fruits of factual labor

Grade 5 category

•Grace Jerome “Summer camp and why you should go”

Well done!

Please try parking and walking to pick up your children if at all possible. a police officer will be coming sometime next week and will ticket anyone who is not complying with the traffic laws.

On April 24, Mrs. Simonetto’s brother is coming to our school to talk with our grade 5’s about working in the RCMP and how they help in the community. He will also be talking about some of the exciting opportunities and jobs that they have. He will be bringing his RCMP vehicle which looks like a SWAT vehicle so please don’t be alarmed if you see it when you arrive at the school!

Summer Session is not far off! Registration for summer school opened on April 10th and I have included some information in this newsletter for any interested parents.

PAC News The LFES Pac is actively looking for new members. Nominations are open to all parents of LFES students for the upcoming 2017/2018 school year.

PAC meetings are held once a month, alternating between morning and evenings to accommodate all parents. Our PAC is very active and works hard to do our very best to ensure our students have a great experience. The PAC raises funds through direct contribution and fundraisers like the Christmas Tea to purchase new computers, iPads, field trips, library books and much more. We can’t do this without your input and everyone is always welcome. We are looking to fill a number of vacancies starting in September. For more information please contact Jacqui Jack at [email protected]

Some Gluten-Free options have been added to the Spring hot lunch menu: 1) Two tacos soft shell and kids bowl from Chipotle and 2) Avocado rolls from Nikko Sushi. All the chips, Sunrype Pure apple juice, chocolate milk, milk and Kappa roll are also gluten-free. We have put “Gluten Free” beside the item on the menu when ordering. Also, for Sports Day we will be able to provide gluten-free hot dog buns and hot dogs.

Did You Know……?

Reading real books brings you closer! Apps and ebooks can be fun for kids - but if you read a physical book to a child, you'll be more affectionate with each other! That's the word form a new Frontiers in Psychology report, which found that kids and adults keep their heads down and their arms on their lap when using a tablet or phone. But reading a paper book allows you both to cuddle, which boosts your warm feelings towards each other and makes reading feel more like a shared experience.

Enjoy your Easter Weekend! Mrs. Paton
