ndia's jewels are the parks, palaces, temples, bazaars and, of course, the wild animals which define her exotic past. On this photographic safari we visit Bandavgarh and Kanha National Parks, the two best wildlife sanctuaries in India that house the Royal

Bengal Tiger. Both of these parks were inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Books, and all of the animals described in the books are to be found here. Home to abundant wildlife, Kanha is an amazingly beautiful and spacious park, with expansive grasslands and scenic vistas. Bandavgarh, a smaller park, is equally stunning with its abandoned fort and palace, which nature and wildlife have taken over. We explore and photograph wildlife in exclusive 4-wheel drive vehicles, a well as on elephant back.

On safari in Kanha National Park

From the parks we delve into ancient India with visits to the millennium old temples of Khajuraho and religious Benares (also known as Varanasi). Built on the banks of the holy river Ganga (Ganges), Varanasi is the "oldest" living city of the world and could well be thought of as the "Soul of India" - a fitting end to our photography journey. Although their emphasis is on photography, our Photo Cultural tours are suitable for any adventurous traveler looking for a vacation that is out of the ordinary. In addition to our photography expert, the tours are also fully escorted by a cultural guide.

Often called Tiger Land, Kanha is located in a horseshoe-shaped valley with two distinctive hills on either side. In the center is the maiden (open grassy meadow), dotted with stands of majestic evergreen Sal trees to form a savanna countryside reminiscent of Africa. This park has been designated a “Tiger Reserve” and comes under the protection of Project Tiger — the single largest conservation project mounted by the Government of India. You will arrive this afternoon in time to check in to your lodge and embark on an afternoon game drive into Kanha National Park.

Day 4

Sunday: April 17th KANHA NATIONAL PARK / VILLAGE VISITS Kanha was the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s classic The Jungle Books. This unique tiger preserve is home to some twenty-two species of mammals, including the magnificent Indian tiger. During your private sunrise and sunset excursions into the park, you will look for this elusive and majestic feline. As you have been travelling non-stop for three days, we have a relaxed morning to help acclimate to the 12-hours time difference. Late morning we head out to visit the local village and get a feel for how the villagers reached a balance between farming and wildlife incursions. In the afternoon we will once again head into the park on a safari.

Days 5 & 6 Monday & Tuesday: April 18th & 19th

EXPLORING KANHA NATIONAL PARK Kanha has a large, healthy population of tigers. But this park features more than tigers; it supports the full range of Indian wildlife described in The Jungle Books. The variety and abundance of wildlife in Kanha is remarkable. The park is famous for its herds of hard-ground Barasingha – also called swamp deer, a large and beautiful endemic animal with 12-point antlers (it has probably been saved from extinction by careful management in Kanha).

Also found are herds of the beautiful chital (common name is spotted deer, photo on left), and sambar, the biggest of the Indian deer. Other commonly seen herbivores include barking deer, nilgai antelope, four-horned antelope, wild boar, and the imposing gaur (also called the Indian bison), which is considered the largest wild bovine in the world. A gaur bull can stand over six feet tall at the shoulder and weigh more than a ton! Kanha is known for its large population of gaur, and this large animal is an important food source for the tiger. Other predators in the park include sloth bear, the common (or golden) jackal, the striped hyena, and the dhole or Indian wild dog (which, like the African wild dog, lives and hunts in packs). Leopards also live in Kanha, but are much more difficult to see. Other interesting mammals include the Indian ratel (honey

badger), Indian porcupine, and various species of mongooses. Primates are represented by troops of monkeys of two species—the rhesus macaque and the silver (or common) langur. Kanha’s bird life is equally impressive, with more than 200-recorded species. We take sunrise excursions, departing your hotel pre-dawn that last 4-5 hours. You will have breakfast inside the park, returning to your lodge by late morning. Afternoon excursions are shorter, lasting about three hours, with all visitors required to leave the park boundaries by sunset. All park excursions will be in an exclusive, open-air, 4-wheel drive SUV-type vehicle, and you will be accompanied by a park-certified naturalist.

Tiger taking to the jeep road in Bandavgarh National Park

Day 7

Wednesday: April 20th TO BANDHAVGARH NATIONAL PARK We have the opportunity of one last sunrise excursion into Kanha National Park before bidding it adieu. After returning form the excursion and an early lunch we start our 5 to 6-hour drive to Bandhavgarh National Park in private SUV type vehicles. We will stop along the way as various scenic spots and villages. Bandhavgarh park is located in one of India's last remaining areas of substantial forest, in what was originally part of the princely state of Rewa, home of the rare white tiger. Contrary to popular belief, white tigers are neither a subspecies of tiger, nor are they albinos - they are actually white-colored Bengal tigers (currently there are no wild white tigers). Though small, the park abounds in many of India's endangered animals—spotted deer, sambar, barking deer, nilgai, blackbuck, four-horned antelope, gaur (Indian bison and largest of the world's oxen), sloth bear, leopard and the Royal Bengal Tiger.

Days 8 & 9

Thursday & Friday: April 21st & 22nd EXPLORING BANDHAVGARH NATIONAL PARK We have two full days to explore Bandhavgarh, with sunrise and sunset game excursions in this fantastic wildlife park. Daytime sightings of tiger are more likely at Bandhavgarh than at any other preserve in India. The Park remains closed to visitors between mid-morning and mid-afternoon, and accordingly, your will have sunrise and sunset excursions in private 4-wheel drive vehicles, accompanied by attentive and knowledgeable naturalists, who will expertly introduce you to the area's rich and varied wildlife. After an early-morning game drive, we picnic at the old fort situated on a hilltop overlooking hundreds of miles of forest. Abandoned in 1935, the complex was once the thriving home for thousands of residents, ruled by the Maharaja of Rewa. Beautiful statuary and buildings overgrown by grass and trees dot the hilltop ruins. We explore and photograph the remains of temples dedicated to the incarnations of Vishnu and marvel at the beauty and serenity of this remote archeological treasure.

King’s Lodge – Cottage (B, L, D)

PLEASE NOTE: All parks in India shut down in the middle of the day. We take sunrise excursions, departing our hotel pre-dawn that last 4-5 hours. Afternoon excursions starting between 2-3 pm, last about three hours, with all visitors required to leave the park boundaries by sunset. All park excursions will be in exclusive, open-air, 4-wheel drive vehicle, with a maximum of 4 participants per vehicle. All vehicles will be accompanied by a park-certified naturalist.

Day 10

Saturday: April 23rd DRIVE TO KHAJURAHO After breakfast we depart Bandavgarh and make the 5-6 hour drive to the historic temple town of Khajuraho. Khajuraho, now a quiet little town, was once the religious capital of the Chandela kings. The Chandelas were devout tantric Hindus and were prolific patrons of religious architecture. They built numerous, elaborate temples to serve as emblems of their piety and strength. Khajuraho is also famous for its beautiful Hindu temples, considered to be some of the finest examples of Nagara-style architecture. The temples are well known for their lavish use of erotic carvings, which shocked Victorian British described as “a little warmer than necessary,” but to the ancient devotee they symbolized the joy of life and the joy of spiritual liberation through Tantric ritual.

After checking into your hotel, and time permitting, we visit the smaller complex of temples, saving the main complex for tomorrow morning.

Day 11

Sunday: April 24th EXPLORING KHAJURAHO / TO VARANASI Khajuraho, now a quiet little town, was once the religious capital of the Chandela kings. The Chandelas were devout tantric Hindus and were prolific patrons of religious architecture. They built numerous, elaborate temples to serve as emblems of their piety and strength. Khajuraho is also famous for its beautiful Hindu temples, considered to be some of the finest examples of Nagara style architecture. The temples are well known for their lavish use of erotic carvings, which shocked Victorian Britishers described as “a little warmer than necessary,” but to the ancient devotee they symbolized the joy of life and the joy of spiritual liberation through Tantric ritual. Today you will head out to explore the Chandela temples. Back to the hotel for a late breakfast, some packing and then off to the airport for our flight to Varanasi. Depart Khajuraho 2:05 PM Jet Air #9W 2424 Arrive Varanasi 2:55 PM

Varanasi is a holy city, its life dedicated to Siva. Like Jerusalem, Rome, and Athens, Varanasi is one of the world's ancient living cities. Nineteenth-century missionary M.A. Sherring was overwhelmed by the antiquity of Benares (Varanasi) when he wrote: Twenty-five centuries ago, at least, it was famous. When Babylon was struggling with Nineveh for supremacy, when Tyre was planting her colonies, when Athens was growing in strength, before Rome had become known or Greece had contended with Persia, or Cyrus had added luster to the Persian monarchy, or Nebuchadnezzar had captured Jerusalem, and the inhabitants of Judea had been carried into captivity, she had already risen to greatness, if not to glory. Mark Twain in his “Following the Equator” observed: "Benares is older than history,

older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together!" Varanasi is the center of Hindu culture; like Jerusalem it is seen as a holy land and has survived the centuries because of its sanctified place in Indian religious life. To die in Kashi (Varanasi) insures release, or moksa, from the endless karmic cycle of rebirth and suffering. Varanasi is India in microcosm, both the beautiful and the repellant.

This afternoon you begin your exploration of Varanasi by visiting the ghats for which the city is so justly famous. At sunset you will have the wonderful experience of a boat ride on the Ganga River, during which you will witness the evening arthi (photograph above).

Day 12

Monday: April 25th EXPLORING VARANASI Rise early this morning to take a sunrise boat ride on the Ganga past the ghats. Here, pilgrims gather on the steps that lead down to the river to bathe in the waters of the sacred river as the city begins to come alive in the magical misty light of dawn. You will walk through the streets and visit some of Varanasi’s many temples before returning to the hotel for breakfast. In the afternoon, take a short drive to Sarnath. It was here at the Deer Park of Sarnath that Sakyamuni Buddha, having achieved enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, delivered his first message of the middle path to final nirvana. Also of interest are excavated pillars from the time of the Maurya Dynasty (323-185 B.C) and stupas from as late as the 12th Century. These were unearthed during the British archaeological explorations in 1836 and are housed in the museum on site.

Trip Grading: Easy to Moderate Touring

This is a moderate touring trip, staying in 3-5 Star hotels with facilities to match their star rating. All accommodations on this tour are safe, clean, and comfortable, with private en-suite facilities. Please note that road conditions in Cambodia and Myanmar leave a lot to be desired and the traffic can appear to be wild and unregulated and horns are used more often than brakes. Photography and sightseeing excursions can be exhausting and long (5-6 hours) thus giving the tour a “moderate” rating. Bathroom facilities during excursions and long drives are frequently nonexistent and limited to the facilities at a local restaurant or shop. Inter Asia flights can be delayed without “reason,” or much advance notice. Flexibility and a sense of humor are essential ingredients for travel in Asia.

WHY TRAVEL WITH DESTINATION HIMALAYA? Commitment To Intelligent Travel At Destination Himalaya, our primary mission is to successfully fulfill our “Commitment To Intelligent Travel.” We are committed to ensuring travel that is both ecologically responsible and culturally sensitive. Out of respect for the natural environment and the people of the regions in which we operate, we uphold the highest standards of low-impact and sustainable tourism. Our goal is to ensure a mutually beneficial encounter between our clients and the proud people of Asia, and to help preserve the pristine beauty of this special land by continually striving to exceed “industry-best standards.” Our “Commitment to Intelligent Travel” stresses education and understanding. We do our utmost to educate our clients about the destinations they will visit prior to their departure, during their time in Asia, and after they return home. Our goal is to integrate the best parts of travel - exposure to culture, art, geography, history and recreation - with the best part of human nature - the desire to connect and improve each other’s lives. Satisfied past clients include the National Geographic Expeditions, National Geographic Committee for Research & Exploration, American Museum of Natural History, Grace Family Foundation, Wharton Business School, Goldie Hawn, to name a few. Commitment To Giving Back From our inception and initial involvement with the SOS Tibetan orphanage in Chuglamsar, Ladakh in 1989, Destination Himalaya, along with our clients and partners in Asia, has made “giving back” to local communities paramount. Dealing exclusively with small, local organizations, our goal is to be highly involved in our chosen projects. This hands-on approach amounts to much more than just giving money. We become actively involved in each project and maintain that involvement over time. Every year our staff and our Asian partners visit the communities and institutions we sponsor, to monitor the status of our projects. This creates an invaluable atmosphere of trust and understanding as a long-term relationship develops between Destination Himalaya and our beneficiaries. For details on the specific projects we support, please visit our website, destinationhimalaya.com/GivingBack. We employ only locals in all of our oversee operations and when required we have invested time and finances to educate and train locals to become valued members of our field staff e.g.: in Tibet, from drivers to management we only employ Tibetans; similarly in Nepal our entire staff is Nepalese. In February 2014, Destination Himalaya CEO, Sanjay Saxena was one of the 51 Honorees at the “Unsung Heroes of Compassion,” honored by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Sanjay was selected as one of the 2014 Honoree for his longtime commitment to involving, empowering local comminutes in all of our travel destinations, and for the “giving back” projects that he and Destination Himalaya have started and continue to oversee in South Asia.

17

Commitment To Safety Not only do we do everything in our power to see that our trips operate safely, but we try and stack the deck in our favor. All of our trip leaders have First Aid training and majority of them are WFR (Wilderness first Responder) certified. DH staff actively monitors the political situation of our destinations on a daily basis. In addition, every client who travels with Destination Himalaya is automatically covered by our medical and evacuation insurance. This coverage includes $25,000 for medical expenses, $500,000 for emergency medical transportation, $750 for a trip delay, and $300 for a baggage delay. Commitment To Sustainable Tourism Long before the global notion of “sustainable tourism” arose, Destination Himalaya understood the sometimes-fragile qualities of the landscapes and cultures of South Asia. For this reason, we are dedicated to travel that is both ecologically responsible and culturally sensitive. Destination Himalaya feels that the tenets of Sustainable Tourism necessitate interaction with the people and traditions of our host countries. We never disturb prayer or rituals, yet we are always open to communicating. We enter each situation with a willingness to learn and a desire to share our own ways in a respectful manner. Our clients taste indigenous cuisine, experience traditional dance and music, and revel in the glorious art and architecture that permeates the South Asian lands. As travelers, we are in a position to share what we have witnessed - be it the deteriorating condition of a monument, the disappearance of traditional life due to harmful incursions of modernity, or the endangerment of an ecosystem. Our clients become empowered through our trips, and we encourage them to communicate what they have seen and learned to others at home. Additionally, Destination Himalaya’s Bay Area office and all of its Asia ground operations are now carbon-neutral. We worked with Stone Valley Partners to calculate our carbon impact and are offsetting it by supporting carbon reduction projects in India (Thar Desert Wind Farm, Jaisalmer and Panchpatta Wind Power, Maharashtra). We carefully choose hotels with environmentally sensitive policies; in the backwaters of Kerala, our clients enjoy the Sauvar Nagam, the region’s first eco-friendly houseboat as it is outfitted with solar panels for power and hot water and a state-of-the-art septic system to prevent wastewater leakage. DH’s commitment to sustainable practices continues at home, as the company brings these sensibilities to its US operations. All our marketing (including color brochure) and other company materials are printed locally on 100% recycled paper using soy-based ink. DH hires and buys only in the local arena, and strives to exceed environmental standards at home, as well as abroad.
