• Biomes‐ geographical areas that have similar climates and ecosystems.  Biomes contain one or more ecosystems

Tundra

• Found in latitudes around the North Pole

• Precipitation: 30‐50 cm Temperature: Summer 12°C

• Soil is very poor• Permafrost‐ layer of permanently frozen soil.

Grasslands• Consists of Plains, steppes, savannas, pampas

• “Breadbasket of the world”  found on every continent

• Precipitation: 25‐75 cm

• Temperature: Summer‐ 30°C   Winter‐ 0°C

• U.S.A. – Prairie or Plains

• Asia – Steppe

• Africa –Veldt or Savanna

Temperate Grasslands

• No trees grow in the temperate grassland.

• Fires prevent slow growing plants from getting too big

• Many consist of small, seed eating mammals, and some large herbivores

• Precipitation:  150 cm Temperature: Dry Season 34°C

Wet Season 16°C

• Can have scattered clumps of trees

• Large herbivores inhabit the savanna

• Giraffes, zebras, gazelles, and wildebeests

Deserts• Temperatures are extremely hot during the day and very cold at night.

• Biome that receives the least annual rainfall per year.

• Plants have deep or long spread out roots to reach water

• Plants grow far apart to reduce competition

• Animals are adapted to survive extremely dry weather (ex: large ears, recycle water)
