It takes something really special to excite hardbitten US auto writers. This year they found it, at the all-new Lancer’s January global launch in Detroit.

“Arguably the best Mitsubishi in years” said Car & Driver. “Mitsubishi has stepped up to the plate swinging,” agreed Motor Trends.

And no wonder.

Not only is the new Lancer chock-full of optimal performance and safety enhancements, its athletic, up-to-the-minute, Evolution-inspired styling is guaranteed to generate instant street cred.

Lancer’s been a Kiwi family favourite since 1975. But New Zealand’s never seen a Lancer that looks or performs like this one:

• At its heart, a lightweight 2.0 litre MIVEC

engine with manual shift or 6-stage CVT auto, delivering 115kW for an anticipated 7.7 litres/100km fuel economy.

• For driving safety, rally-developed Active Stability Control to more safely handle unexpectedly tight cornering and ABS to rein in the power.

• To protect those enjoying the ride, seven dual-stage airbags (even one for the driver’s knee), RISE body technology, and an anticipated 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

• For total chassis integrity and performance, Lancer is built on the same platform as the ultimate high-performance car, the much-anticipated Evolution X.

Regardless of model, this advanced technology will deliver a top-level driving experience for every new Lancer owner. FIVE STAR SAFETY

The launch of the all-new 2.0L sedan will see three new specifi cations: the SX entry model, the VR and the VR-X.

Throughout the range Lancer builds on a high level of specifi cation beginning with the entry model SX which includes:

• Active Stability Control with traction control

• Seven dual-stage airbags – driver, front passenger, side, curtain and driver’s knee

• 16” alloy wheels with 205/60R16 tyres

• Cruise Control

• The option of a manual or CVT transmission.

The VR gains:

• Keyless Operating System

• Sportier exterior trim

• Privacy glass

• 6-disc stereo system with 6 speakers.

The VR-X receives a full sports upgrade including:

• Sports suspension

• 16” front and rear brakes

• 18” alloy wheels with 215/45R18 tyres

• Steering wheel paddle shifters

• Auto rain-sensing front wipers and auto light controls

• Auto-levelling, discharge headlamps with a cornering lamp

• Bluetooth hands-free phone system

• The option of a manual or CVT transmission.

INTRODUCING THE ALL NEW LANCER

Athletic new Lancer

* Load conditions are based on manufacturer’s recommendations.

The new Lancer shares a base platform with the forthcoming Lancer Evolution X. The result is a Lancer that is 35mm longer and 65mm wider than the current model.

Every element of the Lancer has been designed with greater stability in mind. Increased chassis rigidity, a longer wheelbase and a wider track provide enhanced road-handling and performance.

Lancer’s larger body allows for a roomier interior. Increased leg and headroom, and a higher hip-point provide all occupants with a more comfortable ride.

The new chassis layout allows a class-leading 10 metre turning circle for round-town manoeuvring.

In addition to the new chassis, the Lancer range features a comprehensive safety package. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation developmental crash testing has indicated that the new Lancer is likely to achieve a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.

To help prevent accidents, the new Lancer is equipped with Active Stability and Traction Controls. ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) enables shorter stopping distances under all load conditions*.

All models feature Mitsubishi’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body. RISE increases occupant safety by absorbing impact energy through extensive front and rear crumple zones. A highly rigid cabin frame and door pillars redirect the energy away from the occupants.

In the event of a collision, seven airbags and fi ve 3-point ELR seatbelts, the front seatbelts with pretensioners and force-limiters, offer high levels of occupant protection.

Curtain airbags reduce injury to the front and second-row occupants in side-on impacts. Front row passengers also have front and side airbags, and a driver’s knee airbag helps to further reduce damage to the legs in a frontal collision. The brake pedal and steering column have been engineered to further prevent intrusion into the cabin space.

To keep VR-X drivers’ attention on the road auto rain-sensing wipers activate when rain drops land on the windscreen and auto lighting controls turn the headlights on when ambient light is insuffi cient.
