WELCOME TOLANCASTERUNIVERSITYCongratulations! Now you’ve survived your exams, said goodbye to your loved ones for now and made it here, the fun can really begin.

But what actually comes next? After the madness of Freshers’ Week and moving in, how does University life really work? Well, this guide is intended to give you a little flavour of life on Lancaster University campus and show you some of what your campus has to offer.

WHAT OURSTUDENTS SAYSelecting the right location, course and accommodation coupled with moving away from home, whether near or far, can be nerve wracking, yet thrilling. So who better to share their experiences than some of the students who have most recently gone through the same experience?

University life is what you make it, and that’s exactly what these students have done. We asked them to tell you a little about their time at Lancaster University so far…

Down the hatch and bottoms up, drown your fears in a glass or a cup.

Another trip to a packed out bar, trying not to show how scared you are.

Schedules and lectures and a library card, all making you feel like it’s a bit too hard.

New housemates, good and bad, don’t let them see that you’re totally mad!

Got to have fun because you’re a Fresher and it’s just not cool to feel the pressure.

But don’t worry student, it’s not that you’re wetter, it’s just that the others are hiding it better.

The week is packed for good reason, it’s the height of the social season.

It’s all designed with you in mind, before lessons start and you risk falling behind.

But until then rejoice!

And sing at the top of your voice.

And try not get in too much of a sweat. After all, you’re there to learn - don’t forget!

Down It, Fresher by Fay Kesby, former English Literature and Creative Writing student.

A good piece of advice I can offer you is to get out there and meet as many people as you can in the first few weeks; it increases the chances of meeting people with similar interests and people who you could potentially have great friendships with.

Go to parties or join societies; strike up conversations with people you have never met. If you are reserved and shy then Freshers’ Week may seem daunting, but try to be outgoing, at the very least for that week. Getting out of your comfort zone, is the only way to improve!

Ashley Wilkins, 4th year (Mechanical Engineering MEng)

Coming to a campus University will be one of the best choices you’ve ever made. It’s like a little village where everyone’s nearly the same age and there’s absolutely tonnes to be doing. Each college has it’s own bar with a unique vibe, where you’ll meet and hang out with your new friends.

You can play pub games at County, cheer on your football team at Lonsdale or try the Real Ale at Graduate Bar. If eating out is your thing you can also sample burgers at Fylde or savour the pie of the week at Bowland Bar.

If you want to burn off all that food and drink you can use the University Sports Centre which has a 25 metre swimming pool, a gym on two floors and a climbing wall.

And also, because you sort of have to do some work while you’re here, there are computer suites and learning areas dotted around campus open 24 hours a day which will be invaluable should you ever need to get some last minute revision in.

Lancaster campus boasts this and so much more, that you’ll keep on discovering when you’re here. I could talk forever, but I’ll leave you to find out the rest!

Sam Smallridge, 2013 Graduate in History and Politics, and MA Politics

“It’s like a little village where everyone’s nearly the same age and there’s absolutely tonnes to be doing.”

GP REGISTRATIONRegister with a GP today! It is always important to register with a new GP when you leave home and start university so that your records are to hand, should you fall ill. It is much better and safer to treat a patient when their records are available.

There is a GP Practice on campus and all you need to do is fill out the purple form and health questionnaire whilst registering at the library and we will do the rest.

Alternatively call in at the surgery (on the perimeter road) South West Drive and ask to register there, if you haven’t already done so. You can choose to register at a different Practice in the city centre if you prefer, but not both.

Please do not delay. Do not wait until you are ill. If you are not already registered, a local GP may not be able to see you quickly.

Continuing Students: Please remember to update your new term time address details with the GP Practice.

HEALTH &WELL BEINGUniversity life is demanding, and it can be difficult to make sure you stay on top of your game.

Exercise is key, but so is making sure your body has the right nutrients. An important part of this is making sure you are fuelled sufficiently. It’s all too easy to choose the hamburger over and above the salad but some of these tips from Fergus Owens, Personal Trainer at the Sports Centre will help counteract the nasty effects of too many takeaways!

Never skip breakfast If you really struggle with this; go to bed and wake up 15 minutes earlier and eat eggs for breakfast. They are full of everything you need; protein, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins.

Be prepared The first thing you should buy with your student loan is (not a Flaming Woo Woo); GOOD TUPPERWARE. The chances are that your evening meal will be your most balanced meal of the day. By preparing too much and putting it in Tupperware for the following day, you will have created a healthy, handy lunch.

Never go hungry The biggest myth we should dispel right now is that cutting calories is a way to achieving a healthier body. If you are starving yourself then you are storing fat and breaking down muscle which equates to not getting any healthier.

Stay hydrated Drink water like it’s your job. You are no longer just a student; you are now also a full time Water Drinker.

Get some nuts! Whole nuts are a good snack but remember dry roasted and/or salted peanuts are not as healthy as whole raw nuts!

5 A Day I couldn’t possibly tell you not to eat 5-a-day, but if you made those 5-a-day ‘above-ground’ vegetables then that would be much more beneficial for you. Remember: EAT DEEP GREENS.

Fish... Are friends AND food.

Here at the Sports Centre we have a team of Fitness Instructors who are always willing to help. Why not pop in and see us?

You don’t have to be a total gym nut to enjoy the benefits of a healthy body and mind. And not all exercise you have to pay for! The Woodland Walk and Trim Trail around campus are totally free to use and can have you covering over 2 miles in distance.

Throughout the seasons you will encounter many things of interest in the woodland, these include: snowdrops in spring; a carpet of blue bells in May; wild garlic in June; woodland ferns in the summer and a variety of interesting fungi in the autumn.

GETTINGAROUNDNavigating your way around a new campus can be pretty daunting.

But fear not our handy ‘cut out and keep’ map has everything you need to help you get from one end of campus to the other... with a quick bite to eat in between!

If you’ve got questions about where to get your bus from, which routes are covered from campus or how you can bike ride safely into the city centre, make sure you attend one of these talks:

11.00am • 12.00noon • 2.00pm • 3.00pm 1st October at Marcus Merriman Lecture Theatre (Bowland North)

Find out about travelling between the campus and the city centre, car parking arrangements, buses, cycle routes and cycle storage facilities. The talk also includes information about how to reduce your carbon footprint.

TRANSPORT TALKS

THE BASEwww.lancaster.ac.uk/sbs

The Base is your one-stop-shop for all student enquiries.

Located at the west end of Alexandra Square next to the library, it will be open during arrivals weekend as well as weekdays thereafter. Staff at The Base can deal with all general enquiries and make appointments for you to see specialist advisors if you need to.

The Careers Service are also located in The Base, and they can help you with all aspects of shaping your future, as well as helping you look for work whilst you are a student.

THE COuNSELLING SERVICEwww.lancaster.ac.uk/sbs/counselling

The Counselling Service is a free and confidential service on campus and is part of Student Based Services.

If you feel that you need somebody to talk to, simply fill in the online form. You don’t need a referral to meet with one of the counsellors here. The website has a wealth of information on a number of issues that you may also find useful.

This resource is also useful if you are worried about a friend.
