A goo d ground is n ecessary fo r proper lighting operation. Grounding is provided by the lamp socket when it comes in contact with the metal body, or through a separate ground wire. When changing lamp bulbs check the s ockets for corrosion. If corrosion is present, clean it with a wire brush and coat the inside of the socket lightly with Mopar Multi-Purpose Grease or equivalent. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WARNING: EYE PROTECTION SHOULD BE USED WHEN SERVICING GLASS COMPONENTS. PER- SONAL INJURY CAN RESULT. CAUTION: Do not touch the glas s of haloge n bulbs wi th f in ge rs or o th er po ss i bl y o il y s ur fa c es , reduced bulb life can result. Do not use bulbs with higher candle power than indicated in the Bulb Application Table at the end of this group. Damage to lamp can result. Do not use fuses, circuit breakers or relays hav- ing greater amperage valu e than indicated on the fuse panel or in the Owners Manual. When it necessary to remove components to service another, it should not be necessary to apply excessive force or bend a component to remove it. Before dam- aging a trim component, verify h idden fasteners or captured edges are not holding the component in place. HEADLAMP LEVELING MOTOR This vehicle is equipped with a remote headlamp leveli ng system. This system allows the driver to adjust the vertical headlamp aim from the interior of  the vehic le to compensate for passenger or cargo lo ad. A headlamp leveli ng switch is lo cated in the instrument panel and controls the headlamp leveling motor found on the back of the head lamp assembly. T J LA MP S 8L - 1

GENERAL INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATIONEach vehicle is equipped with varies lamp assem-

blies. A good ground is n ecessary for proper lightingoperat ion. Grounding is provided by the lamp socketwhen i t comes in contac t with the meta l body, or

through a separate ground wire.When chan ging lamp bulbs check the sockets forcorrosion. If corrosion is present, clean it with a wirebrush and coat the inside of the socket l ightly withMopar Multi-Purpose Grease or equivalent.

CAUTION: Do not touch the glass of halogen bulbswith fingers or other possibly oily surfaces,reduced bulb life can result.

Do not use bulbs with higher candle power thanindicated in the Bulb Application Table at the end ofthis group. Damage to lamp can result.

Do not use fuses, circuit breakers or relays hav-ing greater amperage value than indicated on thefuse panel or in the Owners Manual.

HEADLAMP LEVELING MOTORThis vehicle is equipped with a remote headlamp

level ing system. This sys tem a l lows the dr iver toadjust the vert ical headlamp aim from the interior of the veh icle to compensa te for passenger or cargoload . A headlamp level ing switch i s loca ted in the

instrument panel and controls the headlamp levelingmotor found on the back of the head lamp assembly.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURESWhen a veh icle experiences problems with the

headlamp system, verify the condit ion of the bat tery

connections, charging system, headlamp bulbs, wireconnectors , re lay, h igh beam d immer switch andheadlamp switch . Refer to Group 8W, Wiring Dia-grams, for component locations and circuit informa -tion.

HEADLAMP DIAGNOSIS

CONDITION POSSIBLE CAUSES CORRECTION

HEADLAMPS ARE DIMWITH ENGINE IDLING ORIGNITION TURNED OFF

1. Loose or corroded battery cables. 1. Clean and secure battery cable clampsand posts.

2. Loose or worn alternator drivebelt.

2. Adjust or replace alternator drive belt.

3. Charging system output too low. 3. Test and repair charging system. Referto Group 8A.

4. Battery has insufficient charge. 4. Test battery state-of -charge. Refer toGroup 8A.

5. Battery is sulfated or shorted. 5. Load test battery. Refer to Group 8A.6. Poor lighting circuit Z1-ground. 6. Test for voltage drop across Z1-groundlocations. Refer to Group 8W.

HEADLAMP BULBS BURNOUT FREQUENTLY

1. Charging system output too high. 1. Test and repair charging system. Referto Group 8A.

2. Loose or corroded terminals orsplices in circuit.

2. Inspect and repair all connectors andsplices. Refer to Group 8W.

HEADLAMPS ARE DIMWITH ENGINE RUNNINGABOVE IDLE

2. Poor lighting circuit Z1-ground. 2. Test for voltage drop across Z1-groundlocations. Refer to Group 8W.

HEADLAMPS DO NOTILLUMINATE

1. No voltage to headlamps. 1. Repair open headlamp circuit. Refer toGroup 8W.

2. No Z1-ground at headlamps. 2. Repair circuit ground. Refer to Group8W.

3. Faulty headlamp switch. 3. Replace headlamp switch.4. Faulty headlamp dimmer(multi-function) switch.

4. Replace multi-function switch.

5. Broken connector terminal or wiresplice in headlamp circuit.

5. Repair connector terminal or wire splice.

HEADLAMP BULB

REMOVAL

(1) Release the hood latches and open hood.(2) Disconnect the headlamp wire harness connec-

tors.(3 ) Remove the headlamp bezel re ta in ing screws

and bezel (Fig. 1).(4 ) Remove the headlamp re ta in ing r ing screws

and retaining ring (Fig. 2).(5) Remove the headlamp from vehicle.(6) Remove rubber seal boot (Fig. 3).(7) Disengage wire retaining r ing from headlamp

(Fig. 4).(8) Pull the headlamp bulb from back of headlamp

assembly (Fig. 5).

REMOVAL

(1 ) R em ove t h e r ea r fog la m p le ns a t t a ch in gscrews and lens (Fig. 9).

(2) Remove t he bu lb from th e fog lamp socket (Fig.

10).

INSTALLATION

LICENSE PLATE LAMP BULBREMOVAL

(1) Remove the l icense p la te lamp lens a t tach ingscrews and lens.

(2) Remove the bulb from the socket .

CENTER HIGH MOUNTED STOP LAMP (CHMSL)BULB

REMOVAL

(1) Remove the screws a t tach ing the cen ter h ighmounted s top lamp (CHMSL) lens assembly to t hehousing.

(2) Separa te the CHMSL lens assembly from thehousing.

INSTALLATION

HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY

REMOVAL

(1) Remove t he headlamp bezel a t taching screws(Fig. 1).

(2) Remove the headlamp assembly retaining ringattaching screws (Fig. 2).

(3) Disconnect the headlamp assembly electricalconnectors and remove the headlamp assembly fromthe bucket .

HEADLAMP LEVELING MOTOR

REMOVAL

(1) Remove t he headlamp bezel a t taching screwsand bezel (Fig. 3).

(2) Disconnect the headlamp and headlamp level-ing motor electr ical connectors.

(3 ) R em ove t h e h ea d la m p h ou s in g a t t a ch in gscrews (Fig. 4).

(4) Rotate leveling motor one quarter turn counter-clockwise.

(5 ) Pu ll t h e leve lin g mot or from t h e h eadlamphousing.

(6) Separate the leveling m otor from the headlamphousing (Fig. 5).

NOTE: The headlamp leveling motor arm issnapped into the headlamp housing very securely.Use a firm, steady pull to disengage motor armfrom the headlamp housing.

INSTALLATION

TAIL LAMP

REMOVAL

(1 ) Remov e t h e t a il lamp len s a t t a ch in g screwsand lens (Fig. 6).

(2 ) Remove the ta i l l amp housing a t tach ing bol t s(Fig. 7).

(3) Separate the lamp housing from the body.(4) Disconnect the tai l lamp electrical connector

and remove tai l lamp housing.

INSTALLATION

CENTER HIGH MOUNTED STOP LAMP (CHMSL)

REMOVAL

NOTE: It may be necessary to remove the sparetire.

(2) Disconnect the CHMSL wire harness from theretaining clips.

(3) Remove the cover from the CHMSL contac tbuttons.

(4) Carefu l ly pu l l the wire harness te rminal endsfrom the contact buttons (Fig. 8).(5 ) Route wire harness th rough ta i lga te and sepa-

rate CHMSL from vehicle.

INSTALLATION

REAR FOG LAMP

REMOVAL

(1) Remove th e rear fog lamp at taching screw (Fig.9).

(2) Disconnect the rear fog lamp electrical conn ec-tor.
