Iqbal emphasized that the MILF had already given up a lot for the sake of peace and assured us that they will respect whatever outcome the plebiscite on the CAB will produce, because they are committed to respecting the democratic process. One of the major obstacles to the current peace process is, the non-acceptance by process, simply because this is the first time ever that the voice of the Lumads has been included in the negotiations. Fr. pastoral assignments for June 2014- may 2016

    After deliberations with Consultors and Vicars Forane, I am making the following new parish assignments for the period of June 2014 to May 2016. Included is a general re-shuffling of assignments for archdiocesan offices and ministries.

    Other parish priests and parochial vicars and ministry heads not mentioned continue with their present assignments.

    In the absence of a full-time hospital chaplaincy, hospitals will be served by the parish and/or the vicariate where they are located. Each hospital can be viewed as a special kapilya community.

    Outgoing parish priests with the help of their parish councils should prepare an end-of-term report and inventory of parish assets. These are to be presented to the incoming parish priest, with copies furnished the archbishops office. The same procedure should be followed by outgoing ministry heads.

    The turn-over and change of residence should take place during the last week of May, in time for the new pastoral year starting 1 June 2014.

    I would like to thank all outgoing priests and ministry heads for your services in your assignments over the past years. Any new assignment we receive is a re-affirmation of our service, wherever we are, to the Lord in his vineyard.

    The Immaculate Conception Parish of Aluba, Macasandig conducted a Summer Youth Camp last May 23-25 at Ultra Winds Pualas (Taguanao). This camp focused on family relationship with the theme, Making our Home a Place for Prayer and Evangelization. The event was facilitated by the Parish Youth Apostolate with the guidance of Father Boboy Aguirre with the speakers from the families of World Marriage Encounter. The total number of participants reached 170.

    The first day highlight was the Taize Prayer and confession. The second day started with a Shibashi Prayer at 6:00 AM followed by breakfast and talks. The talks were about the foundation of the family which signifies the Relationship between Husband and Wife, O.T.I.R (Open Trusting Intimate Relationship). Communication, respect, time, discipline, affection, forgiveness and healing are necessary but the most important of all is prayer. It was very heart-warming when all members of the family shared their experiences, the difficulties they encountered to which most of the youth were able to relate. The youth resonated with the children who shared their pains about their parents. At the end of the talks the speakers encouraged the youth to write a letter to their parents and their siblings about forgiveness, reconciliation and appreciation. They concluded the second day with a Solidarity Night which showcased the talents of the youth.

    The third day was dedicated to vocation awareness. The young people read a letter from their parents and before the mass started, there was a youth and parents encounter. This was the most amazing experience because the chapel was filled with the parents love for their children. Together, they gratefully participated in the celebration of Holy Eucharist held at Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel, Taguanao Cagayan de Oro City.

    The participants have shared their thoughts and experiences:

    Ang akong naton-an sa youth camp mao ang relasyon sa pamilya: Akong na-realizenga dili gyud sayon alang sa ginikanan nga tubag-tubagon lang sa anak.

    The Immaculate Conception Parish of Aluba, Macasandig made their annual youth pilgrimage on April 9, 2014 to Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine, Tablon Cagayan de Oro City. Dubbed Walk with Mary Youth Pilgrimage: I have come to do your will, O God, its goal is to help the pilgrims know themselves

    Walk With Mary Youth Pilgrimage 2014and the true meaning of their relationships with God, through the guidance of Mary, the Mother of God. The Pilgrimage didnt limit its participants to the youth but was open to parents and to all who wanted to deepen their union with God, especially during the Lenten season.

    The road to Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine is not an easy one: we had to cross nine rivers, zigzag roads, and rough and

    rocky terrains. But it was also blessed with lush greens and scenic views. Weeks before the Pilgrimage, the youth leaders did a house-to-house invitation, providing a pre-registration listing to every family throughout the parish community. More than 300 pilgrims signed up, a hundred more than last years number.

    God blessed us with a good weather; it was even cool with overcast clouds.

    Reverend Father Marshal Aguirre started the pilgrimage with a prayer, which was

    followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary towards the first station. To reach the first station, we had to cross a river. It was a bit tough because the current was strong on account of the rains the previous days. Moreover, the participants had a hard time prevailing over the rapids as they held on to the rope the marshals provided. Having reached the first station, we were all given a reading from the Gospels; we reflected on it and shared our thoughts with our partner.

    The volunteers in prison service are now working with 15 inmates, and counting, on both Provincial and City Jail. The goal is to help them find hope with their sentence through paralegal advice and counseling.

    Volunteers started their regular schedule, which is every Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00, on May 4, 2014 at the Provincial Jail. They visit the City Jail during Saturdays and some other holidays, especially when it is necessary. The Volunteers in Prison Service (VIPS) help the inmates, especially those who have no idea about their rights and privileges, and those who were convicted for the first time. They give advice about the possibility of parole and other privileges, giving them a chance to get out of prison.

    They also assist prisoners with their needs and requests. They serve as a link between the inmates and their families, and as a bridge for dialogue and reconciliation with their victims. They also give medicines to sick and wounded prisoners, and even helped

    Natandog gyud ko pag-ayo sa mga sharers labina kang Hannah,nakarelateko niadtong part nga gibaliwalaon siya sa iyang mama ug papa. Ingon ana man gyud ko usahay. According also to Villa Borongan Akong natun-an sa youth camp mao ang pundasyon sa pamilyang angayan pagahiusahon sa matag panimalay. - Marivic Gales

    I learned from this Summer Youth Camp how to be a responsible daughter who can handle relationships in my family. I realized the importance of a good relationship in the family: respect, do good deeds and to serve God. - Christine

    Its my second time to join the youth camp. It is the best experience so far. I learned about my family and the importance of God to every family and to every individual as He is our shepherd who takes care of us. The reflection of the speakers, their sharing, especially from the testimony of the youth touched my heart and moved me to tears. They surpassed all their past experiences, obstacles, trials, pains, challenges, and dark times and never gave up. They continue to believe that there is still hope in every broken family if we believe in God and let Him enter our hearts. I also learned to be faithful, to be strong and to hold on against all pains and sufferings we may go through. But most of all I learned that if we love one another nothing and no one will ever get hurt. And if we love each other despite all of our problems we will never have a sad ending to our lives. - Harold Javier

    Through this event, a lot of youth learned that though it is not easy to forgive, with Gods grace it is possible to accept, love and forgive their families. n

    some to start a livelihood. It is through their hands-on experience, visiting the prisons and talking with prisoners, that they become aware of other needs not addressed inside the jail.

    Further plans of the volunteers include education. They plan to put up a learning center and a simple library in both Provincial and City Jail. They hope that these would help the prisoners to continue learning and discovering even in confinement. Believing that education can help correct and reform the outlook of an individual, which should be the goal and function of every penal institution, the VIPS look forward to the support of the Archdiocese and other sectors like schools and volunteer groups for this particular service. n

    MTRCB Forum Highlights48th World Communications

    Day CelebrationsBy Maristela Camaddo

    On the occasion of the 48th World Communications Day, the Social Communication Apostolate of the Archdiocese in collaboration with the Daughters of St. Paul and the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) held a series of fora on their advocacy, Para sa Matalinong Panonood Ng Pamilya nina Juan at Juana on May 16-18, 2014 .

    This theme, echoes Pope Francis message for the 48th World Communications Day which is Communications at the Service of an Authentic Culture of Encounter. According to Pope Francis ...the digital world can become an environment rich in humanity... where people are able to dialogue with each other... where we try

    to understand each others expectations, doubts and hopes... and where we are challenged to become people of depth, attentive to what is happening around us and spiritually alert in responding with fresh energy and imagination as we seek to share with others the beauty of God.

    On May 17, the MTRCB team conducted a forum with City and Barangay officials, the Oro Press Club, the Regulatory and Complaint Board (RCB) and representatives from the religious sector at City Tourism Hall. In the afternoon, they met more than 65 catechists and pastoral workers at the Patrick Cronin Formation Center. On May 18, the MTRCB gave the same forum to the Association of Women Religious of Cagayan de Oro (AWRACO) and the Pauline Cooperators. It was preceded by a televised mass presided by Most

    Rev. Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ, D.D. at Fatima Chapel, A. Velez St., CDO. In the afternoon, they met more than 200 youths at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City.

    The MTRCB team was composed of: Atty. Victoriano S. Muring, Jr., Executive Director; Board Members Bro. Jay Revestir, Marra Lanot, and Keats Musngi; Atty. Jonathan Presquito, Chief Registration Officer, Atty. Ann Nemenzo, and MTRCB staff. They presented the revised classification/ratings for television and film, and their corresponding implications. TV programs are classified as General Patronage (G), Parental Guidance (PG), Strong Parental Guidance (SPG), and

    Journalists lament sorry state of media, FOi at local observance of Press Freedom DayBy James Sia

    According to longtime journalist Ed Montalvan, Press freedom is very important [yet] a lot of people take it for granted.

    Montalvan, who runs the local weekly The Mindanao Current, was one of three main speakers to speak on contemporary Press Freedom issues during the morning session of the local World Press Freedom Day celebration on May 3, 2014. Hosted by the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST), the morning session was attended mainly by communication students from MUST and Xavier University (XU) and a handful of local media practitioners.

    Reminiscing about his days as a young news reporter, Montalvan said that journalists back in the day had to hold second jobs, since journalism as a line of work did not and still does not

    pay well, compared to other professions. He also complained that most so-called

    journalists nowadays do not have formal training of any sort, and only use their influence to extort money from politicians and others using threats of blackmail. The veteran reporter then urged aspiring confreres to get into media, saying that it is a very interesting job, to observe events and to report on them. It is a

    thankless job, but your role in society is important, and we have to keep going.

    JB Deveza, Mindanao Safety Coordinator of the National Union of Journalists i n the Philippines, stated that even today in the Aquino Administration, journalists continue to be murdered in cold blood: there have been 23 such cases in President Aquinos first 40 months, and

    disapproved for airing on television (X). Motion pictures are classified as General Audience (G), Parental Guidance (PG), Restricted 13(R-13), Restricted 16 (R-16), Restricted 18 (R-18) and not for public exhibition (X).

    There was an open forum after the enlightening presentation of MTRCB and they issued an invitation to all to become responsible and concerned viewers and to provide them feedback. The MTRCB team was interviewed at different local TV and radio stations like ABS-CBN, GMA, DXCC, Bombo Radio, Magnum and Ultra. The team paid a courtesy visit to Most Rev. Antonio Ledesma, SJ. D.D., Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro City. n

    none of these have been completely resolved. When Noynoy came into power, he promised to end impunity regarding journalistic killings, Deveza said, but also expressed doubts regarding the Presidents sincerity on the matter.

    Center for Community Journalism and Development executive director Red Batario spoke on the implications of the Cybercrime Prevention Law (RA 10175), which he said granted the Department of Justice very huge powers, very unlimited powers, and that it raised the penalty for libel from 6 months

    to 6 years. The new law, he said, has very large implications for our lives, not just as journalists, but as

    ordinary citizens since

    people who wish to speak truth to power may be fined and jailed for merely airing legitimate grievances on the Internet.

    Batario also discussed the Freedom of Information (FOI) Bill, whose prior attempts at passage have been denied by Congress. Without the FOI Bill,

    Batario said, the government would have too much power [and] too much authority. He added that we must be wary, we must be vigilant and not just accept [the present situation] as it is.

  • Social Com hosts news, feature writing workshop for parish volunteersBy James Sia

    The Social Communication Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro held a one-day seminar-workshop on news and feature writing on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the ground floor of the Patrick Cronin Formation Center, St. Augustine Cathedral compound, Cagayan de Oro City. Veteran journalist Louise Dumas and XU Development Communications instructor Rechelle Ann Tolentino-Barraquias were present to share their knowledge, ideas, and experience with volunteers from Cagayan de Oro parishes and religious organizations.

    Ms.Dumas, an alumna of Xavier Universitys Development Communications program and the University for Peace in Costa Rica, gave a crash course on newswriting, or writing hard news. To tell a compelling news story, one must know what to put in and what to leave out, as well as to ask oneself what makes the story interesting and newsworthy. Dumas also reminded the audience to keep their stories short and to the point, especially since some newspaper readers are busy individuals.

    Feature-article writing was discussed by Ms. Rechelle Barraquias, who described feature stories as straight newss twin that seeks to pique as well as satisfy curiosity by delivering an in-depth and colorful discussion of a subject, usually a person. She summarized the goal of feature writing as making the familiar new and the new familiar.

    A workshop followed in the afternoon, during which members of the audience were given the opportunity to apply the points they learned from the two guest lecturers by producing sample stories that were later evaluated and remarked upon by the guest lecturers themselves.

    Karen Deguia of PYCC Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish described the seminar-

    workshop as thoughtful, magamit namo siya for future use. Joan Sibi of the Enterprise Ministry said Bisan mubo ang time, nahatag nila ang basics. Jurgen Lapuz of Young Servants of the Lord said the event was interesting, daghan matun-an, mas tsada mosulat. n

Armin Luistro, agreed that history tends to be written by the winners and, in the case of the Philippines, by the Christian majority. and as stewards of Gods creations, of all living creatures and the natural environment, it is our right to protect them, he said.Archbishop Ledesma, who is also a co-sponsor of the Cagayan de Oro River basin Managament Council, referred to 2011s Tropical Storm Sendong as the starting point in taking action to protect the environment, which in turn would greatly lessen tragic consequences that may arise from future weather calamities. We are interdependent and this is the value of biodiversity, the archbishop commented. He recommended that projects for integral human development... marked by solidarity and inter-generational justice be undertaken, so that future generations may continue to reap the benefits of the environment, should those living today take pains to conserve and cultivate the natural resources currently at humanitys disposal. The

    archbishop suggested taking advantage of renewable sources that can sustain our environment as one strategy to avert irreversible damage [that may affect] future generations, which, he laments, seem to be happening already.Representatives from the Islamic and indigenous faiths also spoke on their respective religions perspectives on environmental care , followed by a presentation by Xavier Universitys Engr. Dexter Lo, who provided a recap of the extent of Sendongs damage as illustrated by disaster maps as well as scientific evidence of rising average temperatures, which may increase the probability of weather catastrophes occurring in the future, as well as lower crop yields and more frequent breeding and feeding of disease-carrying mosquitoes. An open forum and an afternoon-long group discussion session followed. n Cagayan de Oro delegation headed by Archbishop Ledesma with Alberto Quattrucci, Secretary General of Peoples and Religions Community of Sant Egidio.

    Meanwhile, Rev. Fr. Julius B. Clavero, SSJV, Archdiocesan BEC director, facilitated the six-hour pastoral planning sessions of 42 BEC lay leaders from the different vicariates. He presented the previous BEC programs and asked suggestions for some improvements and other concerns. After an exchange of ideas and thorough discussion, a unified plan of activities/events for the pastoral year 2014-2015 was created. It focused on the following pastoral goals:

    a) Strengthening the ACDO-BEC ministry team and formation team;

    b) Strengthening the BEC structure in the parish and vicariate level;

    c) BEC awareness in the whole Archdiocese especially in the city parishes;

    d) Re-orientation towards a more integral and comprehensive understanding of BEC;

    e) Deepening of BEC core values and essentials toward a wholistic spirituality;

    f) Financial system to support the BEC programs.

    It was further agreed that the major BEC celebrations will be aligned to the theme for the Year of the Laity: Called to be Saints, Sent forth as Heroes. Also, the Archdiocesan BEC formation meeting will be held every first Saturday of the month and the vicariate in-service will be on the 3rd or 4th or last Saturday of every month. The day concluded with a program as a tribute to the leaders and their members for their active collaboration for the past three years. n

    fatigue, and were exhausted. This was the hardest hike I ever experienced and yet I am surprised because I would never have thought I could stand such an ordeal. This just proves that with God nothing is impossible.

    We finally reached the lower grounds of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine - a very beautiful valley surrounded by steep mountains and cliffs. It is like heaven on earth. But we still had to get through one rough road to reach the Shrine on top of the hill.

    When we reached the top, I felt the lightness, the glory, the success, and the Spirit of God in my heart. Through all the rough roads, exhaustion, heaviness, thirst and so much more, we reached our goal with faith in God, love, patience, care, and a positive attitude. As we all gathered at

    the top, Reverend Father Marshal Aguirre celebrated the Mass. During the homily, he invited three individuals: a mother of three, a breadwinner of the family, and a person who was nurtured by the Church to share their experience of the pilgrimage and their reflections. I was touched by their inspiring stories and was encouraged to serve God more, and to serve His people better.

    Right after Mass the pilgrims went to the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe to pray, and others gathered in groups to take pictures. We had lunch like one big family, everyone sharing food, stories, comfort, and simply bonding together. Everyone looked radiant, like they had not been from a tiring and rough pilgrimage. We all went home safe, with smiles on our faces, and a light and renewed heart. This is one of the best, solemn, meaningful, and deep pilgrimages the parish has ever conducted. Indeed, with God nothing is impossible! n

    In bringing the Gospel closer to the poor, Rev. Fr. Allan B. Chabit, SSJV, and church wo rkers, invited parishioners from the marginalized sectors in the community of Bugo to participate both in the Eucharist (every novena mass) and at a banquet thereafter For nine days, May 9-17, 2014 at 5:00 p.m., zone leaders brought to the church at least fifty special guests to be part of the occasion.They also entertained the guests by giving them free tickets to the Concert for a Cause sponsored by the parish finance council held at Pilgrim Christian College auditorium. It was their chance to watch and listen to the SHJP Grand Choir with Friends and Music Chorale of their rendition of religious songs. On the feast day, May 18, more people were invited and given food packs prepared by the church workers. The celebration culminated with a fluvial procession sakay-sakay at Bantiles bay after the Holy Mass. Local fisherfolks in the area shared their boats for the activity. culmination of Flores de Mayo at St. Augustine Cathedral, CDO

    By James Sia At the Feast Day of San Isidro on May 15, 2014, patron saint of Gusa parish, main celebrant Fr. Florencio Salvador, SSJV outlined in his homily how laypeople may follow in the footsteps of the farmer-saint and turn regular hard work into a tool for ones own sanctification. Fr. Salvador, who was once assigned to Gusa parish, spoke of the three pillars of sainthood: work, prayer, and works of charity, which he referred to as elements of the spirituality of work and holiness. Instead of being regarded as a curse and punishment, Fr. Salvador said, work ought to be seen for what it really is as a source of blessing and self-fulfillment. To work is mans vocation, he said.In addition, Fr. Salvador pointed out three signs that ones work is building him up: humility about ones work and its fruits, ability to share said fruits with others, and ability to take a rest from work. For work to sanctify the worker, however, he stated that the worker must be in a state of grace, must have good intentions regarding his work, and must regard his work as an offering to the Lord. He also quoted San Isidro as saying: To work, yes; to be a slave to it, no. n
