The evening ended with a casino party and dancing.

We’re grateful to numerous graduate broth-ers for helping make the Dallas Pig Dinner a big success. Brothers that contributed to the 2017 Campaign for Fiji at Tech made this event financially feasible. Some of the other brothers that deserve special recognition for their help with the Pig Dinner are: Sheldon Cunningham ’58, Bobby Gleason ’72, Barry Orr ’78, Glenn Moor ’84, Jay Justilian ’89, Robby Short ’91, Jason Petrie ’92, Kyle Markee ’96, Ryan Bigbee ’02, Anthony Contreras ’02, and Mike Uryasz ’12.

A link to photos from the Dallas Pig Dinner can be found on the homepage of our website, techfjijgrads.com.

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at the 65th Annual Norris Pig Dinner in Lubbock on Saturday, April 13, 2019!

Darryn Andrews ’98 sacrificed his life in Afghanistan while saving the lives of three other men in his unit on September 4, 2009. He received the Silver Star for his actions that day. The Texas Legislature awarded Darryn the Legislative Medal of Honor in 2013.

The Lambda Tau Chapter nominated Darryn to be honored on Texas Tech’s Wall of Honor in Drane Hall. We are pleased to announce that he received this prestigious honor at a special ceremony on May 22.

We are honored to call Darryn a brother!

Darryn Andrews ’98 Added to Texas Tech’s Wall of Honor

Dan Hurley ’75 was inducted into the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association Hall of Fame in San Antonio on June 22. In 2004, he served as president of the association with more than 3,000 members. He was honored as its “Lawyer of the Year” in 2015.

Dan’s legal career began when then district attorney, Alton Griffin ’51, hired him as an assistant district attorney in 1978. He left the DA’s office to go to work for his father’s law firm. Even though he performed all types of legal work at the time, it was the thrill of the trial and criminal defense work that captured his interest. It was this pas-sion that led to his Hall of Fame career.

Congratulations, Dan!

In just two months, an impressive $14,569 has been committed to the 2018 Campaign for Fiji at Tech. More than 40 graduate brothers reflected on their days in Lubbock and made the decision to invest in the chapter that provided them with lifelong friendships and is one of their main connections to Texas Tech University.

With the support of Lambda Tau alumni, I am confident we will reach our goal, and I would be honored to add your name list of donors on the next page helping us do so. I encourage you to join the Black Dia-mond Circle, our top giving level, by making a generous contribution of $1,000. This gift is only $83.33 a month when it is paid in 12 monthly installments. If this amount is more than you would like to contribute this year, please consider a contribution of $500. It is only four install-ments of $125 each when it is paid quarterly.

Please consider making a gift today—large or small—to help us achieve our $30,000 goal. Every gift will make an enormous impact on the campaign and all we have planned this year.

Your gift will not only enable today’s undergraduate brothersto have the same life-changing experiences you did, but it will also assist with ongoing graduate communications (such as this newsletter), help with expenses associated with the Pig Dinner and the Joe Ray Goodin Schol-arship banquet, and assist with travel to and from the Fiji Academy and Ekklesia.

If you haven’t given to this year’s campaign yet, now is the time! Join the growing list of donors today by visiting our website (techfijigrads.com) and clicking the “Support the Campaign” button, or returning the pledge form below. For your convenience, you may spread your gift over the course of a year by making monthly or quarterly payments. You can also set up recurring payments to charge your credit card automati-cally or draft your checking account.

Rest assured, your generous contribution to the Lambda Tau Chapter will be handled by the BCA with great care.

With your help, this year’s campaign will transform the lives of count-less brothers to come!

Fraternally,

Glenn Moor ’84 Purple Legionnaire

Cory Morrow Entertains Brothers from Across the ContinentPhi Gamma Delta’s 170th Ekklesia was held in Dallas from July 26 to

29. More than 800 brothers from across the United States and Canada attended our biennial convention. Bill Townend ’05 served on the host committee for more than a year to make sure everything ran smoothly. He did an outstanding job and represented our chapter very well.

The highlight of the Ekklesia was the special event on Friday night at Gilley’s. Cory Morrow ’95 put on an amazing concert for everyone. Cory regaled the concert goers with tales from his time in Lubbock and in our Chapter. He brought the house down when he recited the “Persistence” quote from memory. It was a great night.

We’re very proud of Cory’s success. He’s just released a new album, “Whiskey and Pride.” You can learn more about him and his music at corymorrow.com.

Brothers,

The Lambda Tau Chapter had a great start to the school year! We are extremely pleased with how rush turned out this semester. We are ex-cited to instill the values of Phi Gamma Delta into the new pledge class. The Greek Intramural League has returned to Texas Tech after a multi-year absence. Our brothers are excited to compete for the prestigious “Blanket” again. We will return it to its rightful place—the Fiji Lodge.

Last semester the Chapter GPA was 3.044, surpassing the all-under-graduate, the Interfraternity Council, and the undergraduate male GPA averages. I would like to extend a personal thank-you to Ryan Bigbee ’02, who served as the Lambda Tau Purple Legionnaire from August 2014 - August 2018. Ryan spent countless hours with the brothers of Lambda Tau. His devotion to our Chapter and the amount of time he sacrificed won’t be forgotten. Our new Purple Legionnaire, Glenn Moor ’84, a former Chapter president, has brought great excitement about the future of our Chapter. As always, feel free to visit our Chapter at any time! The opportunity to meet our graduate brothers is always a blessing.

The Chapter celebrated this semester’s Joe R. Goodin Scholarship Banquet on September 9. We were very honored to have Chancellor Emeritus Kent Hance as our keynote speaker. He delivered an inspira-tional and entertaining keynote speech. His service to West Texas and Texas Tech has spanned several decades and has had a tremendous impact on the area. He encouraged our brothers to dream big dreams. We’re grateful that he took time to speak to us.

Our Chapter received a Certificate of Superior Academic Achievement at the Ekklesia for surpassing the all-men’s GPA at Texas Tech for 25 consecutive years! It’s a streak that we plan to continue for many more decades to come.

Since its inception in 2001, the Jerry S. Rawls Foundation has awarded 1,985 scholarships totaling $3,781,000! The impact this generous gift from Jerry Rawls ’67 has had on our Chapter and brothers cannot be overstated. It has given our brothers a stronger incentive to achieve academically. It has allowed brothers that were struggling financially to remain involved with the Fraternity. Most importantly, Brother Rawls’s gift serves as a powerful reminder to all of us: we have an obligation to give back to our community, our University, the Fraternity, and other organizations that taught us the important lessons which help us along our life’s journey. We are the lucky ones. We will “pay it forward” by helping others and making our communities better.

Thank you, Jerry!

We’re also grateful for the hard work done on behalf of the Foundation locally. Thank you to Bobby Gleason ’72 and his wife Debbie, George Nelson ’58, and Glenn Moor ’84.
