ThisisthesecondvolumeoftheLakotaAudioSeries.Itisdesignedprimarilyforbeginnerlearners,butitwillbeusefultoallstudentsofLakotawhohaven’tpreviouslylearnedfromanaudio-basedmaterialorwhohaven’thadachancetolearnfromastructuredandsequencedlearning material.

How many units and when?

Werecommendthatyoulistentooneortwonewunitseveryday.

Ifmostofthematerialisnewtoyou,wedon’trecommendlisteningtomorethantwounitsaday.Asyougainmoreconfidence,youcanlistentomorenewunitsaday.Still,itisalwaysadvisabletousemanageablelearningportions.

Beforestartinganewunit,alwaysreviewtheunitsyoulearnedduring thepreviouslearningsession.

Ifyoulistentonewunitsinthemorning,youcanreviewthemintheeveningorthenextday.

Ifyoulistentonewunitsintheafternoonorevening,reviewthemthefollowingday.

Doyourbesttohavealearningsessioneverydayoratleastfivetimesaweek.Ifyouhavealearningsessiononlyonceortwiceaweek,youwillnotachievemuch,evenifyouspendhalfadaylearning.Bylisteningtotwonewactivitiesandreviewingtwopreviousactivities,youwillspend anaverageof20-30minutesoflearningeveryday.

How to listen?

ListentotheEnglishsentenceanditsLakotatranslation.RepeattheLakota translation aloud. Repeating aloud is one of the most important aspects of this learning method. If the Lakota sentence is repeated, then you, too, should say it twice.

What is the content of activities?

Everyactivityintroducesoneortwopatterns(sentencepatterns,conjugationpatterns,wordusages,orothertypesofpatterns).

Eachpatternisrepeatednumeroustimeswithinanactivity.ThisrepetitiveNatureenablesyoutointernalizethepattern.Repeatingthesentencesallowsyoutodrilltheintroducedpattern.

Eachpatternisintroducedinoneunitandrecycledorreviewedinoneormoresubsequentialunits.Thisreinforcesyourknowledgeofthepatterns.

ThepausebeforeeachLakotasentenceallowsyoutosaytheLakotasentencebeforehearingitfromtheLakotaspeaker(incaseswhenyou arereviewingorwhenyoucananticipatetherecurringpattern).

Vocabularyissometimesintroducedinwordlists,anditisalsograduallyaddedintherepetitivepatternactivities.

Theremarksaboutgrammarthataresometimesprovidedatthebeginningorendofactivitiesaredesignedtohelpyouunderstandthepatterns.Still,theyarenotmeanttobememorized.Itisalwaysusefultostudytheexamplesratherthanunderstandthepatternsonlyonthegrammardescription.

AnintegralpartoftheLakotaAudioSeriesisthebookletwiththeprintedversionofthedialoguesandsentences.

Youshouldfollowtheprintedtextwhilelisteningtonewactivitiesandduringeachofthefirstreviewsessions.Followingtheprintedversionofthedialoguesenablesyoutoemployyourauditorymemoryandvisualmemory.Thebookletwillalsohelpyouperceivesomeofthepatternsstructurally.Also,becausetheLakotaorthographyisphonemicandconsistent,spellingandpronunciationalwayssupporteachother.Thismeansthatbyfollowingtheprintedtextduringyourlisteningsessions, yousignificantlymultiplyyourabilitytopronounce,spell,comprehend andreadLakotacorrectly.
