ers slips away.

Those looking to avoid the

typical holiday stresses of last-

minute shopping trips to a

crowded mall might want to

consider buying locally at this

unique craft fairs that organiz-

ers say is one of the biggest in

Vermont.

Find a unique treasure or a

holiday keepsake made by hand

by a local crafter or a perfect

holiday treat to give as a gift or

take to a holiday table for shar-

ing from a local baker there will

be something for nearly every-

one at these area holiday craft

fairs.

Admission to this event is

free.

The Christmas Fair runs

each day from 10 a.m. until 4

p.m. at its usual location, the

Poultney High School gymnasi-

um.

The Vermont Farmers

Market invites everyone to East

Main Street to get some authen-

tic Vermont goodness to give to

others during the holiday sea-

son.

Whether it is that perfect

hand made holiday treat or a

lovingly crafted and equally

unique gift item, this craft fair

likely has what you are looking

for.

“This great fair has grown to

be the largest of its kind in

southern Vermont with over

sixty talented entrepreneurs

bringing such a vast diversity

of craft creations for you to

choose from,” organizer Bill

Clark said.

“Everything from Christmas

décor and balsam wreaths to so

many items for Christmas giv-

ing in jewelry, candles, knits,

pottery, woodcraft, paintings,

prints and frames,” Clark said.

Also featured are myriad

food options, “Country bakers

have a vast assortment of pies,

breads, cookies, pastries, fudge

and doughnuts,” Clark said.

“Our gourmet foods include

maple syrup and a diverse array

of maple products, 100 varieties

of preserves and specialty

cheeses along with sauces, sal-

sas, pickles, apples, cider and

honey,” Clark said.

“While you will find the Best

of Vermont here we also invite

some nearby New York State

vendors to join us with their

own Best of the Adirondacks

flavors and creations,” Clark

said.

Clark said gift boxes and bas-

kets will be made up for patrons

or they can go through and

select items for one of their own

and mail order is also available.

“We think you will like our

prices,” Clark said.

“Poultney is a great town so

you might want to allow some

extra time to visit some of the

great merchants who always

help support our event that has

over the years made it so out-

standing,” Clark said.

What once began as a small

holiday craft fair in the East

Poultney Church blossomed

into the two-day holiday event

that now needs a gymnasium to

contain all of the vendors and

their items.

The placement of the holiday

fair, on the weekend immedi-

ately following Thanksgiving,

accounts for some of the event’s

success, organizers said.

Another factor in the event’s

success was the presence of the

crafters themselves at the point

of sale in many cases the same

person who made the decora-

tion, toy or tasty treat will be

the same person who sells it to

the patron.

“This is the granddaddy of

all of them; it’s a real success

story, no doubt about that,”

Clark said.

For more information Clark

said shoppers should call either

Jamie at 802-287-9570.

On Friday, Dec. 9, Linda

Goodspeed, author of Pico,

Vermont, a popular history of

Pico ski resort, will be at Book

King in downtown Rutland to

sign copies and talk about the

book, as well as her new histori-

cal novel, Redfield Proctor and

the division of Rutland (History

Press, 2011).

Although the books cover

very different ground -- Pico

traces the development of

alpine skiing in the U.S., and

Proctor, the rise of one of the

nation’s most powerful busi-

ness and political bosses of the

late 1800s -- the two books are

actually related.

“Redfield Proctor once

owned Pico,” Goodspeed said.

Redfield Proctor, meanwhile,

went on to found the largest

marble company in the world at

Proctor, Vermont and rose to

national prominence.

As the third and final con-

cert in its November folk and

traditional music series,

The Salt River Revue, a combi-

Cold River Band, at 2 p.m. on

Sunday, Nov. 20.

Together and separately, the

two bands have been playing for

concerts and contra dances for

the past 30 years. The Salt River

Revue is a family-friendly con-

cert with toe-tapping music that

promises it will be hard to sit

still.

Admission is a freewill dona-

tion, which will go toward the

Brandon flood relief efforts.

I never had a Grampa I could

talk to and I believe that is part

of the reason that I have always

been fascinated by listening to

old guys. You can learn so much

just by listening. They fill the

gaps of the things you should

know to get along in town.

My favorite was Ray

Pritchard who I worked with at

Smith’s Hardware. In about five

years we got to know each other

so well and we had so much fun.

I was floored when I was asked

to be a pall bearer at his funer-

al. It still brings a tear to my

eye.

Well, I lost another one of

those old buddies. When I first

came to Williams hardware,

Dennis was in quite often and

we would have these great visits

about Fair Haven and I’d keep

him up to date on friends from

days gone by.

For the past ten years he has

been crippled up and unable to

get in, but every now and then

his grandson, Nolan Illinski,

would take him along and come

to tell me, “Gramp’s out in the

car.” Out I’d go and oh was it

beautiful. We’d go from the old

guys he worked with at “The

Stink Shop” to “Have you seen

so and so lately” to “Did you

know so and so was his sister?”

One of my “sources” filling the

gaps.

Somewhere along the line

people start asking you ques-

tions about “The good old days”

and you begin to realize that

you have become one of those

old guys. And you have become

someone’s “source” and it is

you filling those gaps.

Isn’t life just beautiful.

Thanks for everything,

Dennis, and God bless.
