Release Notes

January 25, 2013

New Features

Topic Feature Description

Install Compatibility with Windows 8, 32-Bit and 64-Bit

AERMOD View Version 8.1 is compatible with Microsoft Windows 8, 32-bit

and 64-bit versions.

AERMOD MPI (Parallel Version) requires the installation of MPICH2, which

requires that .NET Framework 3.5 is installed in your computer. As

opposed to Windows 7 and XP, Windows 8 does not automatically install

.NET Framework 3.5. The user must manually select it before installing

MPICH2 1.4.1. Instructions are provided in the AERMOD View Installation

Notes.

Models Latest Releases of US EPA Models Available

The following US EPA Models were released since Dec/2012 and are

incorporated into AERMOD View Version 8.1:

1. AERMOD Model 12345 (Released Dec 2012)

2. AERMET Model 12345 (Released Dec 2012)

3. AERSURFACE Model 13016 (Released Jan 2013)

AERMOD

MPI

New Version of Lakes AERMOD MPI 12345 (Parallel Version)

A new version of the Lakes AERMOD MPI for the US EPA Model Version

12345 is now available (AERMOD_MPI_Lakes_12345.exe). You can

specify to use this model under the Preferences dialog.

Note: AERMOD_MPI_LAKES_12345.EXE or AERMOD_MPI_LAKES.EXE will

run the latest version of the AERMOD model (12345) in parallel mode

using up to a maximum of 8 cores.

Control

Pathway

New Non-Default Options in Control Pathway

New Non-Default BETA options have been added to the Control Pathway

supporting the new options introduced in the US EPA AERMOD Model

12345. These options address model performance concerns in low wind

speed conditions:

METHOD STABLEBL ADJ_U*: adjust surface friction velocity.

LOWWIND1: increases minimum horizontal turbulence and turns off

horizontal plume meander.

LOWWIND2: increases minimum horizontal turbulence and

incorporates a modified meander component.

Users can input a user-specified minimum sigma-v, minimum wind speed,

and maximum meander factor in conjunction with the LOWWIND1 and

LOWWIND2 options.

An additional option was introduced that allows users to specify that input

wind speeds are vector means not scalar means.

Topic Feature Description

Source

Pathway

New Line Source Type Introduced

A new source type, LINE, was introduced in the US EPA AERMOD Model

12345. This new LINE source is an alternative to the current AREA source

type for rectangular sources.

The LINE source type, specified as 1 line segment with start/end points

and width, utilizes the same routines as the AREA source type, and will

give identical results for equivalent source inputs.

A graphical tool was implemented in AERMOD View for this new source

type.

Terrain

Processor

Updates to the Download of NED Terrain Data

The feature to download NED terrain data from the USGS site, introduced

in AERMOD View Version 8, was updated.

Beginning December 18, 2012, the USGS

National Map Server no longer offers download

of NED data in GeoTIFF format, which is the

format accepted by AERMAP. NED 1 and 1/3

arc-second data is now only available through

1- degree tiles in ArcGrid and GridFloat formats.

Lakes Environmental incorporated in AERMOD View 8.1 a seamless

conversion of downloaded 1-degree GridFloat tiles into the GeoTIFF

format.

Note: Support for non-CONUS areas (Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico)

was also implemented.

Fixed Issues

Topic Issue Description

Terrain

Processor

Automated Download of NED Terrain Data Connection Issue

Starting in AERMOD View Version 8.0 users can now automatically

download USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED) terrain data files for

projects located in the United States.

On the first week of October 2012, the USGS changed the server

parameters and settings that allowed third party programs to

automatically download the NED terrain data from their servers. Users of

AERMOD View trying to download the NED terrain data started receiving

messages that a connection with server could not be established.

AERMOD View Version 8.0.5 contains a solution to this issue.

NOTE: This feature is only available for users with current maintenance.

If you are receiving this update as part of your maintenance, once your

maintenance expires, you will no longer have access to this feature.

Import Importing AERMOD Input Files with Julian Day Ranges in

Meteorology Options

When importing AERMOD input files to AERMOD View Version 7.4, the

program ignored the ME DAYRANGE parameter correctly if individual days

were specified using Julian day notation instead of MM/DD.

This has been fixed in AERMOD View Version 7.5.

Import Importing Projects which Contain Spaces in the Project Name

AERMOD View Version 7.3 introduced project names greater than 8-

characters and containing spaces.

An issue was found in Version 7.4 when attempting to import some

AERMOD input files which used double quotes around referenced project

files. This issue has been resolved in Version 7.5.

Receptor

Pathway

AERMOD Failed to Run for Project Names Containing Spaces

In AERMOD View, the default name for the receptor output file (*.ROU)

and source output file (*.SOU) files produced by AERMAP is the project

name.

With the introduction of project names greater than 8-characters and

containing spaces, starting in AERMOD View Version 7.3, an issue was

found in importing the .ROU file to the AERMOD input file which prevented

the model from running successfully. This issue has been resolved by

using double quotes when specifying file names with space.

Source

Pathway

Changing Source Type to Line Area Source

An issue was discovered in AERMOD View Version 7.4 when users tried to

manually change the source type from line volume to line area source

type. Parameters associated with the source (e.g., deposition, source

group assignments) would use incorrect source IDs for the automatically-

generated sources along the line’s path resulting in unsuccessful model

runs. This issue has been resolved in Version 7.5.

Additional Checks Implemented for TD-3505 (ISHD)

In AERMET View, additional checks were implemented for the Adjustment

from GMT to Local Time if surface data is in TD-3505 format (ISHD).

Surface data in TD-3505 is reported in GMT time and therefore the user

needs to specify the adjustment from GMT to Local Time.

US EPA AERMET Supported Surface Met Files and Year Range

The US EPA AERMET Model Version 11059 now checks for a range of valid

years for the several surface data formats. The acceptable range of years

are as follows:

NWS Surface Format Start Date End Date

CD-144 --- 12/31/1995

HUSWO 1/1/1990 12/31/1995

TD-3505 (ISHD) --- ---

SAMSON 1/1/1961 12/31/1990

SCRAM 1/1/1984 12/31/1992

TD-3280 --- ---

Example: If a SAMSON file is provided for one of the NWS stations which

are present under the ASOS station list (see previous topic) and the year

of the SAMSON file is prior to 1961 or beyond 1990, then AERMET will set

all cloud cover values for the surface output file (*.SFC) as missing (99).

This SFC file will not be appropriate for use with the AERMOD model.

For stations IDs not found in the ASOS list (e.g., 99999, 66666, etc.), a

warning will be given under Stage 1 Report file (*.RP1) but cloud cover

values will not be set to missing.

New US EPA 1-Hour SO2 NAAQS Option

Under the Control Pathway - Pollutant / Averaging screen a new

option was introduced to guide modelers complying with the latest US EPA

NAAQS standards for SO2.

The new 1-hour SO2 NAAQS standard should be calculated based on the

average of the 99th percentile (4th highest) of the annual distribution of

daily maximum 1-hour concentrations averaged across the modeled

years.

After the selection of the pollutant type SO2, the user should check the

US EPA 1-HR SO2 NAAQS Option box. This will automatically select a

few additional options:

1) 1-hour average (CO Pathway)

2) 4th highest for 1-hour average (OU Pathway)

3) Max Daily file(s) (OU Pathway)

AERMINUTE Utility

The US EPA released AERMINUTE (Version 11059) on April 8, 2011.

AERMINUTE is a program that processes 1-minute Automated Surface

Observing Stations (ASOS) wind data available from the National Climatic

Data Center (NCDC) in the TD-6405 format.

AERMINUTE generates hourly averaged wind speed and wind direction to

supplement the standard hourly ASOS observations used in AERMET to

improve the number of calms and missing winds.

In AERMET View, you have access to the AERMINUTE Utility under the

Surface section – ASOS-1 Minute tab and by pressing the AERMINUTE

button.
