Happy April..... Another quarter has come to an end here at RLRS and it seems like the year just began. Amazingly, June will be here before we know it and students will be getting ready for summer plans. I urge you, as families, to keep a focus on the last few months of the year, keep your child's priorities in order so that he/she can have a strong ending to an important year. Again, there are several important events coming up and I hope families are keeping an eye on the school events calendar for changes and updates. We ask that as you look over the calendar, you keep in mind scheduling appointments, vacations, and the like so that students don't miss valuable activities at school. Beginning in May, there will be numerous assessments being administered to students. Having just spent two days at the Spring Conference for the MIAAA at the Samoset in Rockland, I am looking forward to warmer weather coming to Rangeley. As
many of you know I travel from Augusta often and as I do, I see the changes in seasons coming. The snow banks in Augusta are gone, the lawns are bare and getting ready to show signs of green. One sure sign of spring is that spring sports have begun at RLRS. Our varsity baseball and softball teams have been practicing indoors the past two weeks. The middle school teams will be starting before vacation. The schedules for the teams are posted on the sports calendar online. As always, please contact me at school if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

FROM MRS. PRATT: Welcome Spring! Finally, it is rain and not snow. The incoming
freshmen will be working toward our move to a standards based system of learning aligned with Maine’s Learning Results. As we move toward a proficiency based diploma in four years, this work will prepare for that change. Parents of incoming freshmen should have recieved an
invitation to a parent meeting on April 7th at 6:00. The proficienct design will incorporate tracking and reporting on core standards with a more traditional grading system.
I encourage parents to access Infinite Campus for information about their child’s grades and
assignments. Progress reports are available real time on Infinite Campus. If you need support from technology, please contact the school and speak with Lynn Richards-Pollock. Student can and do know how to access Infinite Campus if any parent has forgetting the process. Intersession will again occur and most students have made their selections. This will occur on April 16-18 and
all students are expected to take part in a learning opportunity. These are school days and part of
our required learning days with regular attendance as a requirement. I continue to start my
day with a hope to see more signs of Spring. THINK GREEN! If you have any
questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me at school:

A Journey Through PunishmentTheatrical Production at Lakeside Theater
Hosted by: RLRS Alternative Education Program
The RLRS Alternative Education program will be hosting the theatrical production, A Journey Through Punishment, April 7th, 2014 at the Lakeside Theater in Rangeley at 5:30 P.M.. Admission is free but donations are graciously accepted to cover facility use costs. A community discussion and answer session will immediately follow with the actors.
The play, A Journey Through Punishment, was established by the non-profit theater company Maine Inside Out. They use art as a medium for rehabilitating youth offenders. All the participants in the program are from Long Creek Youth Development Center. The students created and put on the play which is about how our earliest choices in life, succumbing to peer pressure and dealing with punishment in various forms, can affect our lives. This is a theatrical production that will resonate strongly with our most at-risk students, as well as give perspective to the rest of the student body about how critical healthy decision making, especially during their teens years, is.
This production is generously supported by the Rangeley Friends of the Arts, RLRS Parent Teacher Association and the Rangeley Boarder Patrol.
Here are some links that will help you understand more about the project as well.

OT NewsSelf Help Skills
Self-help skills are the skills that children need to develop in order to thrive in all settings throughout their life. Development of these skills is needed to build independence and self-confidence. Being able to take care of themselves
is an important part of personal and social development.

How to Help Your Child
*Let them try-Try not to step in too quickly. Let your child work at a task. Help in small steps such as holding the pants to put one leg in and then letting child hold the pants to put the other leg in. Show your child how to do things then have them try. * Encouragement- Tell your child that you are proud of him/her when an effort is made to be independent (even if the effort was not successful). If milk is spilled when trying to make breakfast try to take a deep breath, have the child help clean it up and praise the trail. Small messes and extra time for tasks is a small price to pay for life-long independence.* Involve Children- Have your child help with making meals-mixing, pouring, measuring are great tasks that are fun. Have child help set the table, fold the laundry, pull weeds outside, shovel, and washing dishes. These things are great teaching activities that also allow for good bonding, conversation with your child. *Consistency-Children must complete activities and muscle movements millions of times to be independent. Consistency is needed for a task to be mastered. Set aside extra time to allow child to develop the skills such as getting dressed and positively assure them that they will get it! The phrase “I think I can” goes a long way. Also, rewards are great incentives such as a sticker on a chart for every day child tries to get dressed independently. A prize can be given at the end of the week if it was attempted everyday.
Remember every child develops at a different pace. Girls tend to reach self-care milestone quicker then boys. If you are concerned that your child does not have interest in doing things for herself then talk to your doctor or occupational therapist.
