2017 FACTION ATHLETICS CARNIVAL On 5 May, Years 7–12 students participated in the 2017 Faction Athletics Carnival. This year was the first carnival to involve the whole school where students, teachers, administration staff, non-teaching staff and parents were involved in the planning and execution of the carnival. Students and staff displayed excellent enthusiasm, encouragement and dedication to perform well for their individual factions. I would like to thank all the parents and ex-students who assisted with roles and responsibilities on the day. For results and placements, head to page 17. Our family ethos is a core value and influences most of our school decisions and processes. In our IPS Review the review team commented on the strong presence of this ethos among students, staff and parents. I thought it may be worth highlighting some areas where the family approach is evident within the school, but the general community may be unaware:

• There is a total of nine staff I can think of who have worked here in recent years and were former students.

• We have employed four former students to assist them in getting a career start or in a way to assist with their university education.

• Our Aboriginal Education Plan, which forms the blueprint for our strategies and initiatives to assist Aboriginal students, was developed with former student Braden Hill, who now works for Murdoch University.

• I draw upon the student body to solve and resolve issues in the school. My standard line is “I can’t fix this for you, you have to fix it and I can help you do it”. This also applies to parents who through the best of intentions want to help at times, but really can’t. I have always been impressed with our students ability to stand tall and lead the way forward.

• As in all families, members will sometimes make mistakes, behave badly, argue with each other or let others down. In these instances discipline and consequences are a normal part of family life. However, so are forgiveness, support, empathy and care and understanding. We try very hard here to find the right balance when students “let the family down”.

• When family members do well we seek to celebrate and share in their success as they have made their family here very proud.

I would also say well done to everyone involved in our whole of school Athletics Carnival. This was clearly a trial event to see if it would be supported by the student body. The support and feedback were very positive and we will seriously consider a similar carnival in 2018.

Currently 56% of our students have attendance rates above 90%. This is really pleasing as it is considerably higher than in previous years. The average attendance rate for each year group is also higher than in previous years. I hope this trend continues as attendance is one of the biggest contributing factors to student success.

We are currently full in most years with classes at maximum size. We have declined over fifty enrolment applications from students outside our area and we still receive enrolment enquires each week. Whilst this is an indication of the positive regard we now have within the community, it has also placed us under some pressure. This has led to some minor timetable, teacher and procedural changes. We ask that parents of affected students understand the predicament and know that we are doing all we can to minimise the impact upon students.

As most of you are probably aware, the Leisure Centre has closed. Lakeland SHS has taken over the additional court area, but that is all at this stage. The City of Cockburn has not handed over any other part of the Leisure Centre and has fenced off the car park. The Department and City of Cockburn are managing this process, but it is likely to take some time. Traffic in the mornings and after school has been problematic and possibly due to our increased enrolments and the car park closure next door. I urge parents to be patient, park safely and use the correct drop off points. Entering the school car park and then stopping close to the entrance causes following cars to stop on the road. The service entrance is not for parent use. The safety of students and other drivers (buses and cars) is paramount!

I am taking some Long Service Leave in the last few weeks of Term 2. Mr Dober will be acting as Principal during my time away. I look forward to seeing students in Term 3 and hearing about their last few weeks of the term and their holidays.

We received great news from the Schools Curriculum and Standards Authority this term. We were named in the list of Top 50 Schools (all sectors) in WA for literacy and numeracy value adding between Years 9 and 12.

The list was finalised after comparing Year 9 NAPLAN results with Year 12 OLNA achievement. I congratulate all the teachers here on their effectiveness and dedication towards the improvement of literacy and numeracy! The letter from the SCSA CEO and Board Chairperson included:

“Our reason for writing to you on behalf of the Authority’s Board and Senior Executive is to acknowledge the efforts of your school staff and students in the literacy and numeracy gains made over the three year period from 2013 to 2016.

These gains demonstrate the value adding processes and practices that you have put in place to support your students to do the best they possibly can to demonstrate the minimum literacy and numeracy standard.

Through targeted literacy and numeracy interventions, teacher support and student determination and hard work, your school ranks in the top 50 for improvement.”

FREE IMMUNISATIONS FOR YEAR 10, 11 AND 12 STUDENTS:

MENINGOCOCCAL DISEASE (ACWY)

Fifteen to nineteen year-olds are at a higher risk of contracting meningococcal and spreading it through the community, with cases increasing throughout the winter and spring months.

Consent forms for the vaccine have been supplied to our Year 10, 11 and 12 students. Please return these forms so we can reduce the risk to our students and community. If you require another copy, you can download one via Connect. It is important to return these ASAP as immunisations are scheduled to start the first day back of Term 3.

Please feel free to contact the Immunisation Team on (08) 6332 0100 if you have any questions. I have included some Frequently Asked Questions from the WA Health Department below.

Wishing you the best of health!

Ms A TeakleStudent Services

The P&C are calling for parents to assist by attending meetings or helping out in the uniform shop or canteen. A core group of dedicated P&C members have been doing a great job for many years. Without the P&C uniforms and canteen food would go up in cost by at least 10%. It is certainly in the school’s and parents best interests to keep the P&C viable.

Attending meetings is the first step because a healthy quorum is required to make decisions. Meetings take place once per term. Any parent who can devote some time to the uniform shop or canteen would be welcomed.

What is the Meningococcal ACWY Vaccination Program? The Meningococcal ACWY vaccination program is in response to a recent increase of meningococcal infection caused by a particular type of the bacteria, ‘serogroup W’. Individuals aged between 15 & 19 years within the WA community will be targeted to receive this vaccine in order to reduce the spread of this disease.

Why is the program targeting 15 - 19 year-olds?This age group experience some of the highest rates of meningococcal carriage and illness. Once infected, they can transmit the bacteria to people who are at increased risk of infection, including young children. It is expected that providing the meningococcal W (Men W) vaccine to this age group will reduce the spread of this potentially life threatening infection within the WA community.

Why is this targeted vaccination program necessary?Although numbers are low, Men W cases have been increasing each year since 2013 with one case notified in that year and 14 cases in 2016. Two more cases have been notified in 2017. Prior to 2013, serogroup W was uncommon with only six cases diagnosed in the 13 year period from 2000 to 2012.

Which vaccine will be used? The meningococcal ACWY vaccine will be used. This vaccine protects against four groups of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W and Y. The conjugate meningococcal ACWY vaccine Nimenrix®, supplied in Australia by Pfizer will be used in this program.

How will the program work?In 2017, WA Health and local council nursing teams will conduct the vaccinations at schools to students in Years 10, 11 and 12. Additional vaccination clinics will be conducted at community health clinics to capture 18-19 year-olds and other age-eligible persons not attending high school. In 2018 and 2019 the program would target incoming Year 10 students only.

The P&C is in the process of implementing a canteen committee and we would like to invite any parents, students, staff or teachers interested in being on this committee to contact the canteen on 9417 5398.

We welcome all involvement with ideas and opinions.

The canteen is open

The School and P&C need your help!

Dear Parents

The P&C would like to extend a warm welcome to Lakeland Senior High School and invite you to attend our P&C meetings.

LSHS P&C do not fundraise as we rely on our parents paying the P&C contribution and supporting the Canteen and Uniform Shop.

The Canteen and Uniform Shop are run by the P&C and all profits are given back to the school.

The P&C meetings are held once a term in Week 5 at 5.30pm in the School Conference Room. These meetings are conducted in a relaxed manner and designed to keep parents informed about what is happening in your school. Our Principal, Mr Laurie Longworth attends all P&C meetings, keeping us informed of school business, leaving part of the meeting open for question time. Your attendance at these meetings will show your support for the P&C and School Community.

We look forward to your support and seeing you at our next meeting 14 August 2017.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This year the AFL team once again participated in the A-grade carnival where they played against some powerful schools: Willetton SHS, Applecross SHS, Rossmoyne SHS and Leeming SHS. The boys played extremely well and ended the day in 3rd place after compiling two wins and two losses. The team were a great mix of experienced footballers mixing with others that had hardly played AFL before. The boys conducted themselves in an excellent manner and played an exciting brand of football.

Huge congratulations to the Year 7 boys who recently competed in the Basketball Lightning Carnival. They approached the tournament with enthusiasm and a positive competitive spirit. Nerves were flying at the start of the day as this was their first carnival in a high school setting. They showed courage and teamwork as they challenged the other schools in a hard fought competition. They finished 3rd overall, winning 4 games and only losing 2. Big thanks to our helpers Jaxon Bellchambers, Sol Goodwyn-Roberts and Layla Goodwyn– Roberts for volunteering their time at trainings during recess and lunch, over the weeks leading into the competition.

The Year 9 students have been focusing on looking at people in our lives that inspire us. After discussing how this person inspires us, the students then wrote about how they wish to inspire others. The students reflected on negative to positive stereotypes, cultural barriers and just an overall desire to want the next generation of young people to be proud of their culture. The Year 9 students also conducted their first round of AIME’s Got Game auditions. This is where they showcase their talents for a chance to go to the AIME headquarters in Sydney for a variety of activities. On this day, we saw our students really step up and break the “shame” barrier by their amazing talents, like dancing, singing, playing guitar and visual art.

The Year 10 students have enjoyed learning about becoming a mentor to the younger people in their lives. The students have learnt about how important it is to be a role model in their school and they participated in workshops to encourage them to step into this role. The Year 10 students got to present a speech on “If I became the first Aboriginal Prime Minister”, with responses covering remote community development, more football in schools and addressing teen homelessness.

Students have been very engaged and well-behaved across all the excursions and we are looking forward to the rest of the year.

Matilda the musical Excursion reflection

“My mummy said I’m a miracle”... these are the opening lyrics to an amazing and spectacular performance. 26 drama students were given the chance to watch the fabulous musical of the Roald Dahl story, Matilda.

The story was re-imagined with song and dance. Picking our favourite part is nearly impossible. Whether it’s the characters using swings on stage or the lasers used by Miss Trunchbul to scare the students. We were awed by the professionalism and talent of all the cast - Bruce Bogtrotter being a particular favourite.

This excursion was particularly worthwhile to show us how hard work and dedication can produce extraordinary results. We have developed a greater understanding of performance skills because of the show. An incredibly worthwhile musical that leaves us with wonderful memories.

Year 7 Visual Art; “Lines to Music” with Mrs Johnson.

ARTYear 12 Certificate II Visual Art students were inspired to make masks after professional artist Catherine Swioklo visited the art studio here at Lakeland SHS.

Ms Swioklo spoke to students about professional practice, what inspires her and how to create a consolidated body of art works. Students then had the opportunity to make a mask based on their own experiences. All of the students achieved success in this project, making decorative masks that would look good on any gallery wall.

SCIENCE

Year 11 Human Biology students were given the task to carefully and respectfully dissect and investigate the four chambers of the heart of a cow. They were also asked to identify the Atrioventricular and Semi-lunar valves.

This activity gave the students a clearer understanding of the chambers of the heart, valves operating within the heart and the tendons of the heart. The tendons proved to the students how strong the heart could be but the heart itself is very delicate.

Ms N UdyHead of Learning Area - Science

On 27 March a small group of Year 9 and 10 students caught the train to the Old Midland Workshops in Midland where they competed in a Science and Engineering Challenge. Our students competed against other schools in a variety of different activities including; Bridge and Catapult Building, Communication Networks and Grasping at Straws (building a functioning model hand). All students raced against the clock to complete their chosen activity in time for testing. When all activities were completed the Bridge Building team had to test their bridges in front of all the schools. Our Lakeland team were extremely successful with this task as our bridge held the second heaviest weight. It was an exciting and eventful day for all the students that attended.

Dusti-Lee, who attended Lakeland SHS from 2008 until 2012, has been selected to represent Australia as part of the Skillaroos team in the WorldSkills international competition to be held in Abu Dhabi in October this year. She will be the first female competitor in vehicle refinish to represent Australia.

WorldSkills was founded in 1950. It is a global hub which brings together young people, industries and educators to help prepare the workforce and talent of today for the jobs of the future. Young people are given the chance to compete, experience and learn in their skill of choice, ranging from traditional trades to multi-skilled technology careers. As of March 2016 there were 75 member countries and regions.

Dusti-Lee won the WorldSkills gold medal for vehicle refinish in WA in 2016, going on to win the gold medal at the 2016 WorldSkills Australia National titles later that year.

In February this year she was named as a future leader in the vehicle painting industry by the National Collision Repairer Magazine.

WorldSkills Team WA Manager Fiona Johnson has described Dusti-Lee as “an outstanding young woman and a strong role model for women in the industry”.
