About Colorado Springs, CO

Founded as a resort town in 1871, Colorado Springs is Colorado’s second largest city with a population of 464,475. Offering over 300 days of annual sunshine and more than 55 man-made and natural attractions, Colorado Springs and the surrounding region is a popular destination for families,

outdoor enthusiasts and couples. The region is located in southern Colorado along the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies.

The Ute, Cheyenne, Arapaho and other tribes gathered at the base of Pikes Peak, near its abundant springs and in what is now called Garden of the Gods Park. With the Louisiana Purchase, more Anglo-American explorers and settlers began to venture west. In November 1806, American explorer Zebulon Pike traveled through the area and is credited for “discovering” Pikes Peak, though his group was neither dressed nor equipped to climb the

mountain.

Throughout Colorado Springs’ history, the stunning beauty was not the only thing that attracted people to the area. The sunny conditions and dry, mild climate made these communities popular for people suffering from poor health, especially tuberculosis.

In the 1890s, gold was discovered on the western slope of Pikes Peak, one of the richest gold strikes in American history. As a result, by the turn of the 19th century, Colorado Springs was called “the city of millionaires.” One of these millionaires was Spencer Penrose, who made his first fortune in Cripple Creek. He used his vast resources to build the Pikes Peak and Cheyenne Mountain Highways and to establish the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo,

Will Rogers Shrine and The Broadmoor Hotel.

In the 1940s, the U.S. Army opened Camp Carson, marking the beginning of what is now a strong military presence in this region. Colorado Springs is home to major military installations including Fort Carson, Peterson Air Force Base, the U.S. Space Command, NORAD (North American Aerospace

Defense Command), Schriever Air Force Base and the United States Air Force Academy.

Colorado Springs, the state’s second-largest city, has evolved into a sophisticated destination that has retained the charming ambiance of a small town. Colorado Springs’ Chamber of Commerce estimates its population to exceed Denver by 2050.

Olympic Training Center & Museum

The U.S. Olympic Complex in Colorado Springs is the flagship trainingcenter for the U.S. Olympic Committee and the Olympic Training Centerprograms. The CSOTC is able to provide housing, dining, training facilities, recreational facilities and other services for more than 500 athletes and coaches at one time on the complex. The Olympic Museum will be complete by summer of 2019, the rendering of the completed building is to the right.

Air Force Academy

The Air Force Academy is both a military organization and a university. It is filled with the 4,400 cadets and more than 300 Air Force and civilian support personnel and is responsible for cadet training and Airmanship education, supervising cadet life activities and providing support to facilities and logistics. Colorado Springs, CO - AttractionsDowntown Colorado Springs

Downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado has a small-town feel with big-city amenities. The area offers variety of shopping, dining, museums, parks, festivals and events and is a designated Creative District in the state of Colorado.

The Broadmoor

The Broadmoor is a hotel and resort in the Old Broadmoor neighborhood of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Broadmoor is a member of Historic Hotels of America of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Its visitors have included heads of state, celebrities, and professional sports stars. Spencer Penrose bought the property in 1916 and began to build The Broadmoor in 1918 to be “Grand Dame of the Rockies”, patterned after elegant European hotels with excellent service and cuisine. Architects Warren and Wetmore, who designed Ritz-Carlton and Biltmore Hotels, were hired to design the hotel buildings.

Manitou Springs

Manitou Springs was founded for its natural mineral springs. The downtown area continues to be of interest to travelers, particularly in the summer, as the downtown area consists of many one-story, adjoining, small shops, restaurants, and pubs, as well as a creekside city park with a children’s playground made from unusual materials. Among other services, shops cater to tourist interests such as clothing, candy, souvenirs, and outdoor recreation. The main road through the center of town was one of the direct paths to the base of Pikes Peak. Barr Trail, which winds its way up Pikes Peak, is accessible from town.

Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Red Rock Canyon Open Space is a 1,474-acre city park in Colorado Springs, CO. It is situated on the west side of the city, adjacent to Manitou Springs and south of U.S. Route 24. The park consists of a series of parallel ridges and eroded canyons, a continuation of the same sandstone rocks of the Fountain Formation that make up Garden of the Gods a few miles to the north.
