Special Effects workshops will be held for children in Years 5 and 6 on Monday 18 March. The workshops are provided free of charge through the Town of Cambridge.

HARMONY CELEBRATION

Harmony Day celebrates Australia's cultural diversity and occurs on 21 March each year. It coincides with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The ongoing theme of Harmony Day is 'Everyone Belongs'. This year Harmony Day will be celebrated on Thursday 21 March. The normal timetable will be

suspended for the day to allow classes to work with a group of Aboriginal dancers from Wesley College and to participate in a range of activities centred on the Harmony Day theme. Students are encouraged to enter into the spirit of the day by wearing their national dress or wearing orange coloured clothing. Parents are asked if they would kindly provide a plate of food for a traditional Multicultural Lunch which will be held in all classes at 12.15pm. CHANGE OF DATES – TERM 1 PLANNER Please note the following date changes: – School Board Wednesday 10 April 2:40 pm ANZAC assembly Thursday 11 April - details to be announced Easter Hat Parade and Student Council raffle Friday 12 April 8:40 am READING As you would be aware Reading for Meaning is on high maintenance at Lake Monger Primary School in 2019. Ten minutes of reading a day can make a big, positive impact to a child’s reading development. Bedtime stories are also valuable for the following reasons –

They spur children's curiosity and imagination!

Children become hooked on stories and this in turn makes it more likely they will develop a love of reading.

Most bedtime stories involve problem solving and dilemmas Children exposed to a wide range of stories develop critical thinking and emotional skills.

And most importantly, children love them! FORMS

Thank you to parents who have completed and returned the forms distributed at the class teacher/parent meeting. PARENT/ TEACHER MEETINGS

Thank you to our parents who were able to attend the recently held teacher/ parent class meetings. Parents are encouraged to make interview appointments to see their child’s classroom and/or support teacher at any point throughout the year. Any queries regarding your child’s learning program needs to be discussed with the teacher concerned firstly, before making an appointment to see the Principal. VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL

All parents and other visitors that call into the school during instruction time must enter the school grounds via the front office. FOOTPATH AND STAFF CAR PARK

For safety reasons please follow the footpath when entering and exiting the school grounds. Please do not walk through the staff car park.

Please be aware that both of the staff car parks are for staff parking only. There is plenty of parent parking available all along Dodd Street.

Waterwise Fact

Thirst is an indication that your body has already begun to dehydrate: drink water before you feel thirsty.

CRUNCH & SIP National and state data tells us that the consumption of vegetables is far below recommended levels with 5 out of 6 WA kids (84%) aged 4-11 years failing to meet recommendations[1]. Eeek! Aussie kids are also falling short with fruit consumption whilst at the same time eating an excess of energy-dense, nutrient poor foods. The high intake of sugary drinks is of particular concern, with an

estimated 44% of 4-8 year olds and 49% of 9-13-year olds in Australia drinking sugar-sweetened beverages each day[2]. Poor dietary habits in childhood have been linked to negative health outcomes such as tooth decay and obesity. Children who carry excess weight are at higher risk of breathing difficulties, fractures, high blood pressure, early markers of cardiovascular disease, and psychological effects. These children are also more likely to continue to be overweight or obese in adulthood, increasing their risk of developing chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers. The Crunch&Sip® program works in the health promoting schools framework that recognises the

intersecting roles of the school environment (e.g. school policies, the school’s physical environment, and staff support for nutrition promotion), curriculum (e.g. nutrition topics taught through the formal school curriculum), and partnerships (e.g. the broader community of individuals and organisations that impact on children’s health such as parents, community members, and health promotion agencies) in encouraging children to adopt healthy behaviours. AWARDS ASSEMBLY RECIPIENTS

Thank you very much to Mrs Pam Taylor’s Year 2 class for presenting the last assembly. The children did a terrific job conducting the assembly and are to be congratulated on the very important messages about recycling that were presented through the assembly.

Congratulations to the children listed above for receiving an award at this assembly.

The next assembly (hosting) will be held on Friday 15 March and presented by Ms Emma Peet’s Year 5 class commencing at 8:40 am in the undercover area. We look forward to seeing you at the assembly. WORK OF THE FORTNIGHT

The children’s work is on display in the office foyer. Please call in to view the work next you are in the school.

PARENT REFERENCE GROUP POOL - INNER CITY COLLEGE (Planning Name)

We are considering some key aspects of the college’s establishment throughout the year and would

value input of parents or carers of children who will attend the college. We envisage a pool of

parents/carers that may be willing to be involved in working parties (i.e.- uniform, ICT, values and

expectations).

From Adrian Lee, Associate Principal

If you are interested in being involved in the Parent Reference Group Pool please contact Ms Tomlinson by Monday 18

March.
