According to local wedding planners,

the number of guests a couple is

planning to invite factors into the

location they need to reserve. The next

step after developing a preliminary

guest list is to find the location. Lake

County features more than two dozen

locations that are perfect for wedding

ceremonies and receptions.

While most guest lists start large,

it is important that couples remain

realistic about how many people they

can afford to invite. Remember each

person can add significantly to the

bottom line. Sometimes less people

can equal grander allowances in other

aspects of the celebration, such as the

meal, entertainment or decorations.

While easier said than done, cutting

down or minimizing the first draft of

a guest list can be a trying task. An

easy way to keep the list in check is to

restrict it to close friends and family.

In large families, deciding who stays

and goes on the roster can be stressful

to the couple and their parents.

How to create a wedding guest list

A logical first step to wedding planning is the guest list.

Many wedding planners advise newly engaged couples to

immediately begin assembling a guest list because it

impacts several key decisions in the planning foray.

Traditionally, the invitations are split

evenly between the two families.

Couples may find it difficult in cutting

down or minimizing a guest list. It

is important to remember that the

makeup of a guest list can determine

much about a wedding. Inviting

children can affect location decisions.

More planning time is needed for a

larger contingency of out-of-state

guests so they are able to reserve

airline tickets and accommodations.

Also, remember this about out-of-

state invites: Lake County’s sunny

disposition is reason alone to attend

a wedding.

Local wedding planners say they

find in the Central Florida area

the guest list return is a lot higher

than what is expected in other

areas. This is because many people

view this area as a vacation getaway.

People that typically will not fly

out-of-state for a wedding will fly

out-of-state because Florida is such

a great location.

Couples are encouraged to select a wedding location at least 12 months in

advance. If there is less time to prepare, you might need to be more flexible in

choosing the date or venue. A preliminary guest list is needed to determine the

wedding location. First count the number of essential invites. This will give a

good idea of what size of venue will be required for the reception.

Envision what you want the wedding to feel like and plan accordingly. Following

are two groups of examples for wedding venues in Lake County; the classical

and unique. For a more complete list of event locations, see page 24.

Choosing the perfect venue

Choosing a location for the wedding ceremony and reception is quite

possibly the biggest decision an engaged couple can make. There are

so many different places to host a wedding — church, reception hall,

hotel — choosing the perfect venue can be difficult.

Steeped with 120 years of history, Lakeside Inn of Mount Dora has the romantic

feel of a simpler era, yet offers the conveniences of modern times. The Inn’s

yellow-splashed buildings offer 89 guest rooms, and six outdoor and five indoor

venues for wedding ceremonies and receptions.

Within walking distance from the historic downtown of Mount Dora, many

guests shop at boutiques and enjoy the setting of the European-flavored

villa. Wedding coordinators and photographers will love the Inn’s setting.

With flower-lined paths, a romantic gingerbread-trimmed gazebo set against

shimmering Lake Dora, an Old South style verandah and green lawns, Lakeside

Inn provides the perfect backdrop for those special matrimony snapshots.

This historic downtown building was the original opera house for Leesburg

in the 1880s. The quaint upstairs reception hall is stately with rustic brick

walls and hardwood floor and ceiling. Locals claim this is one of the prettiest

wedding locations in town because with its historic feel couples can do so

much with it to make a beautiful backdrop for a wedding. The 3,500-square-feet

hall can accommodate about 220 guests for a banquet. A highlight of the

opera house is the refurbished 19th century bar that was salvaged from the

Washington Hotel in Indianapolis.

Parks can be popular locations for weddings, but few offer the range of

amenities similar to Hickory Point Recreational Facility in Tavares. Created as

a unique, recreational waterfront park, the 68-acre facility is located on Lake

Harris. The highlight of Hickory Point is its two-story, screened picnic pavilion

with first-floor picnic tables and barbecue grills. The second floor features two

screened-in banquet rooms that are ideal for wedding receptions. The pavilion

also has a kitchen workspace with countertops and a sink. The pavilion can

accommodate small groups or large gatherings of up to 275 people.

Rohr Balloons of Mount Dora has helped more than 90 couples with their

lofty dreams of wedding ceremony bliss. Owner Chuck Rohr is a licensed

minister, as well as a pilot. He helps couples customize each wedding plan

to their taste. Some prefer to host the ceremony just before take-off with

family and friends; others exchange vows as they float over sparkling lakes.

A few couples choose to do both scenarios reciting their vows twice, and who

can blame them. Experiencing the colorful canopy above and a remarkable

view everywhere else, the bride and groom can exchange vows in a lovely

flower-drenched wicker basket.

One of the best romantic getaways in all of Central Florida

is downtown Mount Dora. With its streets lined with New

England architectural, this hilly destination overlooks the

breathtaking view of Lake Dora.

Romantic accommodations in Mount Dora include more

than a dozen different bed and breakfast inns located

within walking distance of the downtown district. These

B&Bs, such as Mount Dora Historic Inn and Coconut

Cottage Inn Bed & Breakfast, offer peaceful lodging and

are a frequent attraction for honeymooners and couples

celebrating anniversaries.

On the lake, many honeymooners enjoy romantic

day cruises along the Dora Canal, which was penned in the

1930s by a leading sports writer as “the most beautiful mile

of water in the world.” Capt. Doolittle Boat Tours offers

day tours, evening excursions to a lakeside restaurant, or

moonlight cruises with bubbly champagne.

Grantham Point and Palm Island Park with its unique

lakeside hiking trail and boardwalk is a picture-perfect

spot for a sunset stroll. In all, the city features more than

a dozen parks, many offering quiet moments for adoring

couples. Other intimate features of the downtown include

antique train excursions with Inland Lakes Railway and

horse-drawn carriage rides.

Perhaps the dreamiest characteristic of Mount Dora is

simply its downtown. With fine restaurants, antique shops

and art galleries lining its streets, Mount Dora provides a

wonderful romantic backdrop.

A honeymoon of outdoor adventures doesn’t have to be

rustic. A new style of luxurious cabins at the 4,500-acre

Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont pales in comparison to

the stereotypical rickety cottages.

The cabin amenities trump even some hotels with a

spacious master bedroom and a kitchen with all the

necessities. Other typical features intentionally missing

from the cabins are telephones, televisions, Internet

connections, radios and clocks. But these are mere

distractions for couples exploring their love and the

state park’s natural beauty.

Romantic ambience is readymade at the cabins with large

screened-in porches overlooking Lake Dixie. On many

mornings, couples can warmly embrace on the deck

with the glistening sunrise reflecting off the lake and an

occasional spotting of a deer or wild turkey. The park is also

popular for fishing, canoeing, bird watching and hiking. The

25 miles of trails accommodate hikers and horseback riders.

For dining options visit the nostalg ic downtown of

Clermont. Nestled between a chain of lakes, this walk-able

district with a charming Waterfront Park offers several

unique restaurants.

Other experiences needed for any romantic journey

through Clermont, also known as the “Gem of the Hills”

with elevations ranging between 200 and 330 feet, are a

wine-tasting trip to the Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards and

an inspiring flight soaring in a piloted glider at Seminole-

Lake Gliderport.

To receive a marriage license in Lake

County, visit one of three offices

of the Marriage License Division of

the Lake County Clerk of Courts.

The Division receives marriage

applications, issues licenses and

performs marriage ceremonies.

The three offices of the Division are:

Lake County Public Records Center, 122

E. Main St., Tavares; Clermont Branch

Office, 1206 Bowman St., Clermont;

North Lake Branch Office, 902 Avenida

Central, The Villages. Offices are open

Monday through Friday (except legal

holidays) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.,

but are closed from 12 to 1 p.m.

Walk-ins are accepted for marriage

licenses; however, appointments are

preferred for marriage ceremonies

by calling (352) 253-2648. There is a

three-day waiting period — for Florida

residents only — after applying for a

marriage license. The cost for the license

is $93.50 (Cash or check only).

Residents who can provide

documentation showing they completed

a state-approved marriage preparation

course within the year do not have a

waiting period. The four-hour course

includes instruction of topics such as

conflict management, financial and

parenting responsibilities. As a bonus,

residents who take the course get a

reduction of $32.50 off the license fee.

The couple must apply in person for a

marriage license. Each person needs to

bring their social security number and

identification (a driver’s license, certified

copy of a birth certificate, military ID card,

state-issued ID card or passport). A blood

test is no longer required. If either party

has been previously married, they will

need to supply the divorce date and state

where the divorce occurred.

Marriage licenses are valid for 60 days.

Before any official may solemnize a

marriage, he or she must require the

couple to produce a marriage license.

After the ceremony, it is the official’s duty

to complete the “certificate of marriage”

portion of the license and return it to

the Clerk’s office within 10 days.
