Hartland-Lakeside School District's First Lego League teams had to make up a little ground this past fall.

Initially, parents and students had heard of the program, which introduces students in grades fourth through eighth toscience and technology.

The district officially started the program at the beginning of the school year, but according to Nicole Dillon, an eighth-grademath teacher at North Shore Middle School, teams usually start at the end of August.

"They were probably like three weeks behind other competition," Dillon said. "At least."

Interest grew quickly, as there are two sixth-grade teams and one seventh-grade squad. Nearly 20 kids make up the threeteams. Dillion and eighth-grade science teacher Dave Grevenkamp initially organized the program and serve as schoolcontact points.

Dillon said the program focuses on projects, robotics and core values. Teams get judged on all three aspects duringcompetitions.

Teams advance

The three teams, coached by volunteers, achieved success at regional competitions on Sunday, Nov. 23, by advancing to

sectionals in Mukwonago on Saturday, Dec. 13.

During regionals, which were held at Marquette University and Mukwonago high schools, team members worked togetherduring the project portion of the competition to answer questions like how to get someone to learn something new.

Volunteer coaches are made up of mostly parents and a set of grand parents who help out the students and run practicesafter school.

One of the sixth-grade coaches, Michael Maple, whose daughter Marielle is part of the Cyber Knights, said his team cameup with a holographic table to solve the question of what would you do to learn something different or better.

"It would be like the next Google or the next Skype or the next computer system," Maple noted. "It would be a 3D interactiveholographic table. They put on a whole skit."

Students were aware of the question before the competition commenced and decided to research experts in the field ofholographs. University of North Carolina-Asheville physics professor Charles Bennett and CEO of Ostendo TechnologiesHussein El-Ghoroury were both contacted by the students to help them understand holographs in a more detailed manner.

According to Maple, El-Ghoroury's company is developing a chip to bring holographic 3D technology to mobile phones whileBennett assisted with writing HowStuffWorks-holograms.

Students were able to participate in a video conference with the two experts.

Catching on quickly

It has been a learning experience for everyone involved so far.

"The learning process for us with the kids was seeing them absorb the information so quickly," Maple said. "The idea of aholographic table, they took that and ran on it on their own. I've played with Legos my entire life.

"I've never known that these kits existed. To watch them just pull it out, follow the instructions, put these sensors on acouple motors and a little programmer and everything else was a little snap-on Lego piece. We just sat back and watchedthem do it."

Says Dillon, "The kids and coaches have put a lot of time into it. We really didn't know what we were getting into when westarted it, but it's been really cool to see the kids progress so quickly and to get along so well."
