The 26th South East Asian (SEA)
Games was held last November 2011 in Jakarta
and Palembang Indonesia. The said event
gathered the best athletes from 11 countries
namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Timor-
Leste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar,
Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and of course,
Philippines. This resulted to the host country,
ndonesia, ranking first with 182 gold medals.
Thailand ranked second with 109 gold medals
followed by Vietnam (96 gold medals), Malaysia
59 gold medals), Singapore (42 gold medals)
and the Philippines in 6th place with 36 gold
medals. The Philippine teams performance is
now the worst after ten years.
This outcome was very contrary to
what the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)
expected. The commission looked forward
o attain 70 gold medals and to surpass the
fifth overall place of the Philippines last
Laos SEA Games in 2009. The result was a
big disappointment for the Philippine sports
arena.
The sad thing about this was that
he fact that the PSC released a big amount
of money (P30 million) to fund our athletes inhe said SEA Games. They even boast about the
unity of the PSC and the Philippine Olympic
Committee (POC) that they said will lead to
he better performance of the Philippines. But
what happened? Why did the Filipino athletes
performed poorly in the said SEA Games?
I can honestly say that I am not an ath-
lete; I am just a spectator of a sport or a game
as they call. I am not good at any sport maybe
because I am not born for it but I still do my
best to at least learn a sport every P.E. class. I
noticed that a lot of people in our P.E. class and
in the school are good in sports; they play as if
it was effortless while the quality of my perfor-
mance is so bad.
This is the reason why I admired greatathletes so much and as a lady of question I ask
myself What makes an athlete to be good?
Merriam Websters Collegiate Dictionary de-
nes an athlete as a person who is trained or
skilled in exercises, sports or games requir-
ing physical strength, agility and stamina. See
denition says it all that it is so hard to be an
athlete. Being an athlete requires discipline, to
be able to control your eating habits and diet,
to manage your time to give more time on your
practice to get the required physical strength,
agility, and stamina. An athlete needs to work
on attaining balance, control, exibility, coor-
dination, stability and rhythm. Attaining all of
these can help them bare greater ability to do
the task require to them. But they need not just
the physical aspects, determination and acu-
ity. Some people think that an athlete training
is wholly for physical training but the truth is
its constitution of 70 percent mental and 30
percent physical. Physical and mental trainings
need to go hand in hand in order to work the mind
and body in its ever greater levels. Because anathlete trains physically with an awareness of
mental processes that will allow him to sharpen
his mind as he trains his body. His mind should
not just simply react to the stimuli but should
do it fast and accurate. There is more to him
than just physical abilities, because he has to
play intelligently, to analyze the situation, to
make different decisions, because the decision
he makes can change the ow of the game. This
differentiates a good athlete from a great ath-
lete. Having mastered the physical and mental
aspects can help David conquer any Giants.
According to one of the great athletes
Our country is gifted with this paradise
along the beauty of the nature. Filipinos are
blessed with so many talents and abilities. And
these presents we receive from the Almighty
serve as an inspiration for us to excel in different
fields like academe, beauty pageants, leaders
and sports. Philippines has proved to the world
that we are the real tigers in different sports.
Manny Pacquiao knocked out many titles and
now he is the worlds Pound-for-Pound King.
The Philippine Azkals goals many championship
and also Smart Gilas gives a three-point shot
to success. Another Filipino team is makingtheir name in the international world of sports,
blasting their own victory: the Philippine Rugby
Football Union or for short, the Volcanoes.
The Philippine Rugby Union Team (PRFU)
is composed of 24 warriors led by team captain,
Michael Letts and coached by Australian, Expo
Mejia. Back to year 1998 when the PRFU was
established and after a decade, it gained a full
membership o the International Rugby Board
(IRB).
In 2005, the Philippine national sevens
rugby team caught the gold medal in the 2005
Southeast Asian Games rugby seven tournament.
The next year marks its win in the international
test match against Guam and still undefeated
in the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU). Year
2006 is the first round of fight of PRFU in the
international match.
The next consecutive years show
various PRFUs success in more international
fight which opened doors for the expansion
and development of the game in the Philippines.
According to data, the total winning of PRFU is69.23% of all the sum of their test matches
against all nations with nine wins and four loses.
The Philippine Rugby Football Union has
more to prove to be able to take their appearance
in the Rugby World Cup. But it will not be hard for
them to reach that goal for they have the agility
to success.
PRFU is in line with Philippines greatest
list of athletes that will serve as a model for
those who are also on their path in achieving
their own success.
Another eruption is seen and more of
this will happen.
trained by Joshua Gold, an athlete is a warrior
and every game, match, he desires to compete
but more than that, an athlete is not just a com-
petitor because to be an athlete is to be a hu
man open to mistakes, to criticism, errors and
bad judgement to excel. Because an athlete wel-
comes failures, he welcomes successes, too.
I guess what really makes a great ath-
lete is not just these attributes but also what is
inside him, his reason or goal why he prefers tobe an athlete. Some athletes ght for money to
be rich, some for medals to be famous but few
of them are athletes because they love being an
athlete. What makes an athlete is the camara-
derie each of them builds with teammates and
opponents, the passion that keeps him going
and the failures and experience that keep the
team stronger.
That is why if I were you, if you got the
potential to be an athlete, be part of them and
dont be just a spectator. If watchings all youre
gonna do, then youre gonna watch your life go
without you.
Today, I want towrite something differ-

ent in my column. I just do not want tocriticize the situation of sports in ourcountry or in our school today, becausemaybe I am not in the mood to do that. When I received the task of writing aneditorial column about sports, only onething entered in my mind: I must share tomy readers how it feels to be an athlete. There is this nostalgic feeling in me that Iwant to reminisce my sports moments.
Let me share with you my ow n ex-periences. Before, I experienced to be-come an athlete, I was a chess player. Iwas in elementary, Grade 6 to be exact, here in LCBA. I was having an ordinary
life back then, not until I entered varsity. Before, chess varsity in LCBA was onlyopen for college and high school stu-dents. And during that time, I heard thatthere will be a try-out in elementary level
because they are in need of elementarychess varsity players. I just really triedout. To make the story short, I became achess varsity player, I was an athlete. Ithought it was easy to play sports, but itwas the other way around. I had to prac-tice and train chess every day afterclass. I only played chess just for fun be-fore; it was totally a different scene ifyou will play for a tournament. I had toprepare mentally. I had to study all therules, chess openings and endings, tech-niques and strategies of this game. I hadto be aware of time pressure becausethere was time limit in every chess game.Imagine I had to train for seven times aweek. Sometimes, I had to play chess un-til midnight or dawn. I had to fight with
people older than me, players who wereveterans, experts and experienced inchess. Most people say that chess is avery easy game because players are notexhausted of any physical training. Play-

ers just sit down and think. But for me,chess is one of the most difficult gamesYes, players are not getting tired physi-cally, but they are very exhausted men-tally. They experience a lot of headachesor migraine because of a lot of thinkingAnd this mental stress affects theiphysical state. Athletes have to train andtrain and train to hone their skills up totheir limits. Athletes are like diamondsthey are needed to be polished to bringout the best in them. Also, athletes arelike saws, they are needed to be sharp-ened all the time so their skills will notdegenerate after some time. Studentswho are athletes need to sacrificeschooling most of the time. They are be-ing excused to classes just to undergotraining. And what makes it more difficulis that varsity players need to maintaintheir grades. Time management andweighing of priorities are very cruciafor an athlete. Added to that, there isalso the pressure that an athlete repre-sents his school, city or country that iswhy he needs to win. I experienced all o
these before. I won many times, I alsolost many times. The triumph of winningis exceptional; the pain of losing is bru-tal.
I salute to all the athletes in ourschool and in our country because theyare very strong persons. I admire thembecause I already experienced how ifeels to be on their shoes. Let us supportour athletes. Let us appreciate all theihard works. Appreciation is the best gifan athlete can receive from people. It ismuch better than receiving gold medalsor cash prizes, trust me.

Corruption, politics, unavailability of
concrete sports program, miscommunications
and misunderstandings among government
sports officials and heads were just some
of the root causes of the Philippines poor
performance. We cannot blame our poor
athletes. They did their very best to win. They
strived so hard (almost like taking suicides)
just to train. Imagine our deprived athletes
getting money from their own pockets just
to have funds for their training and hungry
stomachs. Take note, these athletes were not
rich people. But they were doing everything
because of their love for their sports and
commitment to their own country.
Consequently, a lot of examinations
and intense reviews of programs of various
national sports associations will be conducted
to solve the problem. Reforms on the
positions of government sports officials will
also be considered to have more qualified and
knowledgeable leaders of the Philippine team.
But at the end of the day, we salute
our Philippine team for their sacrifices and
for the medals that they brought home for the
honor of our country. You made the Filipinonation proud. Let us all be positive that in the
next SEA Games that will be held in Myanmar
in 2013, the Philippines will execute better
ranking and performance. As the old saying
goes, PHILIPPINES, PLAY FOR THE WIN!

Filipinos are good in many elds and
e of the elds that most of the Filipino shinen Sports, Several Philippine teams on differ-t sports are now becoming known all over the
rld,. And one of these teams is the Philippine
agon Boat Federation Team which baggedd on different events in the International
agon Boat Federation World Championship.e news about the team and its victory spreade wildre all over the country. But most of
e Filipinos are not familiar with the dragonat (also Dragonboat) racing.
Have you ever wondered what drag-
boat is? Where did it come from? When wear the word dragon, it reminds us of the
nese traditions. The dragons are believed tomembers of Chinese agrarian communities
d are traditionally believed to be the rulers
rivers, lakes and seas. Some people oftenstake the dragonboat racing to competitivewing and canoe racing. The dragonboat rac-
is different, it has a rich fabric of ancientremonials just like the traditions of the origi- games of Olympia in ancient Greece and the
tory of its racing can be traced far back ase same era as that of Olympia.
The Chinese people traditionally hold
agon boat races as part of Duan Wu (Man-rin Dialect) or Duen Ng (Cantonese Dialect)
stival. The celebration is for the traditionalneration of the Asian Dragon Water Deityd it is also an important part of ancient ag-
ultural Chinese society and celebration ofe summer rice planting,. But the Europeanservers of the racing ritual, without under-
anding the signicance of Duan Wu and Duen(which refers to the summer solstice), call
e spectacle as Dragonboat Festival and thisthe term which became known in the West.
This festival is also celebrated to
honor the death of the Chinese court
ofcial named Qu Yuan who commit-
ted a ritual suicide as a form of pro-test against the corruption of the era by
drowning himself in the river. The common
people desperately tried to save him; theybeat drums and splashed the water with their
paddles in order to keep the sh and evils awayfrom his body. Later on, they scattered rice toprevent him from suffering hunger. However,
late one night the spirit of Qu Yuan appearedbefore his friends and told them that the ricemeant for him was being intercepted by a huge
river dragon. That is why, in every festival, the boats used in the races are designed with
dragon heads and tails. The people believed that this is the
basis of the team paddling sport of dragonboat
racing. The standard crew complement of acontemporary dragon is around 22, comprisedof 20 paddlers in pairs facing toward the bow of
the boat, 1 drummer or caller at the bow facingtoward the paddlers and 1 sweep (or a steerer)at the rear of the boat. But the crew sizes vary
with the boat length. The drumbeat producedby the drummer is the heartbeat of the dragon
and it leads the paddlers throughout the race
and it helps them to synchronize their move-ments. The direction of the dragonboat is set
by the sweeper, rather than the paddlers. Butwithout the latter, the boat can not move fast.
The dragonboat racing is organized
by the International Dragon Boat Federation, the world governing body of dragonboat sportand the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation team
is one of its founding members. The team is alsoknown as the dragon warriors who won the
200m event in the 2007 World Championship inSydney, Australia and they continue to defendthe title as champion every year over 75 coun-
t r i e st h a t
a l s o joined theevent. Just
last Augustthis year, they
won their fth goldmedal in the 10th In-ternational Dragon Boat
Federation World Cham-pionships in Tampa Bay,Florida. Despite being one of
the top Dragonboat teams, theydo not receive recognition andsupports from the Olympic Commit-
tee and Philippine Sports Commission.
They received praises and support fromforeigners and other teams but they thirst
for the support of the government and Filipi-no fans. They are doing their best for the coun-
trys pride and as Filipinos we should support theathletes who are making us proud to be Filipinos. The government should give equal supports to all
the Filipino athletes and teams especially thosewho represent our country and not just the goodlooking and well known athletes. We should be
happy, too, that the dragon warriors are born inthe Philippines.

Huwag ninyong sasabihing P.E.
lang.
These are the words that our
P.E. Instructor at LCBA had told
us during our class in P.E. 1. Those
words created a mark on our minds
that we should take P.E. subjects
seriously just like what we do with
our academic subjects. It is because
of the efforts and the hard work our
P.E. instructors exerted just to makeus physically and mentally fit. It is but
proper that we now recognize their
contribution to LCBA Community.
First, we have Mr. Hernando
Lerado who started training athletes
here at LCBA in 1983. He was a
graduate of Bachelor of Science
in Forestry at University of the
Philippines Los Baos where he was
member of the football, swimming,
and volleyball varsity teams. He
participated at the SCUAA (State
Colleges and Universities Athletic
Association) in Isabela. He
also studied Bachelor
of Science in
Physical Education
at UP Diliman. After
studying, he was hired
as a P.E. Instructor and Coach at
Canossa School in Sta. Rosa (1982-
1992), UPLB (1975-1996), and
LCBA (1983-present). At LCBA,
he has produced many great athletes
who were able to compete in different
sports event in the local as well as
national venues including the 2006
Palarong Pambansa in Pangasinan.
And in this years PRISAA, he and
his team ended up getting almost
all of the awards. The LCBA team
was crowned champion in Chess,
Badminton (Mens Division),
Volleyball (Womens and Mens
Division), Table Tennis (Singles and
Doubles), and Karatedo. The LCBA
Team will compete in the Regional
PRISAA in Marikina on February
2012. He is also currently an External
Consultant of Calamba Sports
Council.
Second, we have Mrs. Sylvia
de Jesus, a graduate of Far Eastern
Uni ver sit y. She took up Bachelor
of Secondary
Education, major in
PerfectlyENDOWEDto Train Athletes
Paul John Nuguid
English and Physical Education and
minor in History. She is currently
working as an Instructor and Adviser
of the Cultural Dance Group a
LCBA and as Cultural Consultant o
Calamba City. She is affiliated with
the FEU Modern Dance Group and
FEU Gymnastics Group.
The youngest among the
P.E. instructors is Mr. Marlon d
Guzman, a certified alumnus o
LCBA where he took up Bachelor o
Science in Accountancy and passed
the CPA Board Exam. He took hi
specialization in Physical Education
at Pamantasan ng Lungsod n
Maynila. He is currently working a
an Instructor both here at LCBA and
at STI College-Calamba. His favorit
sport is badminton, thats why he i
the coach of the High School and
College Badminton Teams of the
school. His achievements includ
winning second place in the Palarong
Pambansa-National PRISAA Mee
in Badminton Singles in 2006.
We should not forget the
knowledge, skills, and experience
they have imparted to us. We
should not also forget that withou
them, there will be no great athlete
here at LCBA because of the
advice and guidance theyre givin
to make determined and
competitive athletes
the Lycanson top o
every one.

Its rustrating. I lose!
Te common line I always hearwhen someone suers a ailure aerbrawling or the shining gold in an event.
A eeling that gives us the perception othe end o the world like there is no moresunny morning to come. Someone willdenitely hide in a thick blanket even he isbathing with his own sweat rather than tobe laughed and teased by other people dueto such ailure.
Embarrassing moment is one thingswe really wanted to orget are but not easy
to get over with and ush out.Even how
many times you try to be busy in other
things, it will still hug you back: a nescapeless nightmare. However, running away is not the bestremedy to remove these unwantedthoughts inside our minds. In act,its just a matter o bravery and patience inacing these stus.
Way back to my childhood yearswhile playing with my beloved cousins,I remember my laughs and joys while
playing taya-tayaan and I was etchingthem so that they would be the onegetting aer me. But that laughterdidnt last because I ound mysellying in the ground. I elt the painin my elbows and knees and reduid was owing out o my skin.ears poured out o my eyes and Iburst out a cry. As a result, it markedmy young mind and swore that Iwould never run again. A not-so-deepreason but it really aected me.
Until my senior high arrived,Ive already grew up and I was in awider world. Days had passed and itsthe day o the Intramurals. Ofcerso a school organization werechoosing who would battle orthe running competition. Yellsthundered in our classroomas someone shouted my name
so I was enlisted to the track contest. Fearwas starting to burst out in me because amemory was opening up.
Its the day o the competitioand everyone was groupin
around to watch. I could heathem cheering or me and the
put their aith on me. Like them, also put my aith in the AlmightyTe sound o the whistle serve
as the start o the game and Ivalready given my agility. I e
how slippery the roawas due to scatterebits o sand. But didnt discouragme to win; I passemy ear because
knew they woulstill be there. BuI didnt want tget them lonelyI could almossee the nish linwaiting or me anwhen I steppe
on it, I knew I wonI captured the shinin
medal. A nightmaro our past is not
hindrance to wiin lie. One mus
bravely acit to overcome h
ear. Tere is nothinthat will happen w h eyou run away. Still, will return and come
back to you.
