“LAKA LELUP” is a beautiful and powerful Wášiw (Washoe) term that means coming together for a common purpose.

!We are inviting people to come together this August to celebrate and preserve the cultural and natural heritage of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Tahoe Public Art (TPA) is presenting a first-of-its-kind environmental art experience - conceptualized by Mia Hanak, TPA’s Executive Director -

featuring a floating multimedia installation on the crystal clear waters of Lake Tahoe. This temporary sculptural work of art is designed to

attract and engage diverse audiences in creatively learning about local environmental impacts linked to climate change as well as

solutions that can help us protect one of the “finest examples of nature's grandeur.”

!Climate change is one of the biggest threats facing Lake Tahoe. The impacts of climate change lead to a loss of natural resources,

biodiversity, knowledge, and culture; thus the preservation of the natural environment is essential for safeguarding community sustainability

in Tahoe. We all have a stake in it, our common purpose is to instill a sense of responsibility in locals and visitors alike to take care of the Lake

Tahoe Basin ecosystem by maintaining lake health so the clarity and purity we experience today can be equally enjoyed by future generations. of life.” Lake Tahoe is geographically and spiritually the center of life for

the Wašíšiw (Wa She Shu) peoples. ‘Da aw geyecishes-ha’ is another

important Wášiw term that means “don’t make Lake Tahoe dirty.”

According to the legend of ANG, in primordial times there once was an

island in Lake Tahoe on which a monstrous man-eating bird nested.

The lake was formed about 2 million years ago as part of the

Lake Tahoe Basin, with the modern extent being shaped during

the ice ages. Eruptions from the extinct volcano Mount Pluto

formed a dam on the north side; melting snow filled the

southern and lowest part of the basin to form the ancestral Lake

Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada. Being the largest alpine lake in

North America, it’s known for the pristine clarity of its water and

the panorama of surrounding mountains on all sides.

one of the world’s most beautiful yet vulnerable lakes. Combined change with more than

one hundred years of meteorological data, it is possible to look for the impacts of the

changing climate on the state of the lake. !Meteorological conditions such as air temperature, wind speed, and solar radiation affect

physical lake processes including depth of mixing and currents within the lake. This

information is critical for water quality modeling. Analyses of long-term air and lake

temperature data are providing evidence of global climate change and warming in the

Lake Tahoe Basin. !

!TPA will issue a “Call for Artists” to submit work for consideration in the exhibition; parameters include concepts for one to three minute sets of data visualizations, animated graphics, and video shorts. All content must fall under one of the curatorial themes and be directly derived from pre-approved scientific data sets pertaining to the environment of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

SATELLITE INSTALLATION | CONNECTING LAND TO LAKE

Tahoe Public Art (TPA) will present a satellite public art installation on land to coincide and connect with the installation on the lake at both the North and South Shore locations.

!An interactive simulation of the floating sculpture on the lake will run on two large touch screens where people can explore and interact with environmental stories and data viz created for the LAKA LELUP program.

!Lake Tahoe has been named “America’s Best Lake” by USA Today, “America's Most Beautiful Lake” by Country Living Magazine, and the No. 1 travel destination with TripAdvisor. This picturesque lake, located at the base of the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, bisected by the Nevada-California borders, is 40 minutes southwest of the Reno-Tahoe International airport, and as of 2015, the region had over 4.7 million annual visitors. Lake Tahoe, at an elevation of 6,225 ft, is approximately 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, with 72 miles of scenic shoreline. Having an average depth of 989 ft with the deepest point being 1,645 ft, the water is 99.7 percent pure, and its waters are so clear you can see 70 ft deep. With an average of more than 300 days of sun each year, Tahoe’s summertime activities include swimming, boating, sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, diving, water skiing, parasailing, rafting, windsurfing hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, rock climbing, and mountaineering.

CASE STUDY: CO2 CUBE | COP15 | ST. JØRGENS LAKE, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

“CO2 CUBES: Visualize a Tonne of Change” was a public art installation floating on St. Jorgens Lake in front of the Tycho Brahe Planetarium, in Copenhagen, Denmark, that launched for the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the UNFCCC, which convened from 7-18 December 2009. The exhibit was a digital media art installation and communications platform designed to help people visualize the actual scale of one metric tone of carbon dioxide (CO2) at standard atmospheric pressure being released by human activity, monthly per person. The 28 ft x 28 ft installation was conceptualized by Mia Hanak and presented by Millennium ART in partnership with the United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI) and sponsored by Google and YouTube.

With the LAKA LELUP installation, we apply creativity and technology to accelerate progress on combating the impacts of climate change by improving communications between Change Makers and Change Seekers, locally and globally.
