This Month’s Guest Speaker
Happy August! Isn’t it wonderful to be in Southern California in summer? Any time of year is alright with me! Now, if this yucky marine layer stuff and marginal dive conditions would just go away!
Well, our July LSD event calendar was nothing less than absolutely stupen-dous! If you were able to join us on the 1st Annual Scuba Luau, you were treated to a fantastic day! Much, much more about the event is reported later in this newsletter. Suffice it to say, two years in the making, many generous volunteers, boat captains that really came through and helped to make it special, great food, fun games, hula enter-tainers, fantastic diving, a hilarious water canon fight between the boats, assistance from the Boy Scouts, only a few misplaced items, and no mishaps made the event OUTSTANDING! Consensus is that we will do it AGAIN! Save the date, July 16, 2011!
On August 14th, we have our Santa Barbara Island trip on the Magician to look forward to. There are only a handful of spots still available. Our LSD boat trips are always a GAS! This trip does not require advanced skills, though it is a long boat ride out.
And the winner is … Debbie Karimoto Eighteen photos were submitted for the August contest. Nine of thirteen eligible board members cast votes by assigning a nu-merical score of 3 to their first choice, a 2 to their second choice and a 1 to their third choice. Debbie’s photo garnered three first place votes, one 2nd place vote, and five 3rd place votes for a total of 16 points. Eric Eckes placed 2nd with 13 points and Annette Lohman placed 3rd with at total of 8 points. Debbie is now the recipient of $25 and a chance at winning a special grand prize at year-end. Congratu-lations! Now is the time to submit entries for September. Anybody can win, but you can’t win if you don’t enter.

Comprised of eight beautiful and uninhabited is-lands just off the coast of Southern California, the Channel Islands National Park is home to a wide variety of nationally and internationally significant natural resources. Every month, LSD offers opportunities to join your buddies and dive the Channel Islands. Catalina, San Clemente, Anacapa, and Santa Barbara Islands are the ones we have or will venture to in 2010. Why not, bring your camera of the journey? The Channel Islands are preserved in the same rugged condition as they have been for thousands of years. Jacques Cousteau (and you, the club members) consid-ered these islands the best temperate climate diving in the world. The islands average a distance of about 20-26 miles from shore. Thick with life because of an ocean upwelling that draws detritus from the depths, nourishing an army of plankton that turns the water a soupy green, though often a vast visibility. The sumptuous food chain attracts whales, seals and sea lions, seabirds, lobsters, nudibranchs, and more. The vision of the Channel Islands is yours for the choosing. Anything goes, as long as it is underwater and shot within the Channel Islands. Capture the essence of the splendor offshore.

We leave in the wee hours of the morning and wake up in our cozy bunks out at the island to make 3 dives. We will head back in the early afternoon and back at the dock early evening. You don’t want to miss it! Next up, Farnsworth Bank which is always a club favorite and sells out. It leaves September 25th at 6:00am.
A little soapbox stuff…do you have a save-a-dive kit? Have you ever been on a boat and someone has for-gotten their mask or had it swept overboard? Isn’t it nice that someone has an “extra?” How about a bad hose? Or, a blown O-ring? What about a zipper that won’t work? Or unzips at will? Missing a hood? And, what if you are short a computer? Had a mouth piece all of a sudden grow and extra hole? And, what if your wet suit all of a sudden has a rip? Flashlight go dark? Forget your booties? Forgot your bathing suit? Yep, I have seen all of this! That’s why LSD sticks together! We help each other out when it seems like a good day of diving could go bad because of equipment issues! Be prepared! Put your save-a-dive kit together today! Also, enter our club meeting raffles…you might just win something for your kit! And a box to put it in!
And, in October, mark your calendar for our 2nd annual LSD Swap Meet! Saturday, October 16th from 10-2. Later, on the same day, LSD has been invited to join SOCDC for a Lobster dive (yes, lobster season is right around the corner) and fish/shellfish stew in the fire pit at Big Corona in Corona Del Mar! More details on the way shortly!
Hope to see you at the next LSD dive event or social activity soon! Have a great month, blow bubbles, and safe diving!

It was billed as the Event of 2010…. And it lived up to all the hype! A total of 60 people from the Laguna Sea Dwellers and South Orange County Dive Clubs spent the day diving, feasting on Hawaiian delights prepared by Mark Angel and Konrad Fry, and participating in a number of games. The pictures tell the story...

It's time to add a little variety to our outings and, like in other years, we have a block of tickets for an Angel's Baseball game on Tuesday, August 24th. Angels vs. Tampa Bay Rays. We have great seats at a fraction of the price. Added bonus - It's Angels Fleece Blanket Night (free to all)! All of that packed into the ticket price of $15.00. We have a limited # of tickets. Seats will be behind Home Plate in the View MVP section. Contact John Lee at [email protected] or 714-473-8447 to secure your ticket(s). John will have them at the Club Mtgs. Come out and cheer for the Angels and hang out with fellow divers. Hmmm. Shall we wear dive club shirts or Angel gear? Decisions, decisions, decisions. Let's play ball!

See you next year!
Back in April, Beach Cities Scuba, began offering dive boat service out of Dana Point Harbor via the Riviera. The Riviera, located by the Dana Point Shipyard, offers two tank trips from 7am to 11am and 1pm to 4pm every Satur-day and Sunday. The Riviera is for charter as well. I’ve been wanting to dive the Riviera and I finally had my chance last month. I found out quickly that this wasn’t just any dive operation. Arriving at the parking lot, I was greeted by Bob Kuhns , who worked as divemaster. Bob loaded my gear into a cart and wheeled it down to the boat. Stepping onto the Riviera, I was greeted by Captain Paul Silbert. Paul has extensive experience working for Vessel Assist in Orange County and working boats in the Gulf of Mexico. He made me feel immediately at home and
offered me a light breakfast of instant oatmeal, Danish and bananas. Coffee, tea, hot choco-late (yes Margi, a dive boat that carries hot chocolate!), water, and soft drinks were also included. The Riviera is configured to hold four-teen divers and on this day the boat was full. Despite the number of divers, I found the boat to be spacious. Important to me, the Riviera had a dedicated camera rinse bucket. Our morning consisted of dives to the San Clemente kelp beds as well as Salt Creek kelp beds. You can see both sites from shore but getting there from shore would be a task! In between dives we were treated to chili and crackers as well as soup. If the chili
and soup weren’t enough to warm you up, the Riviera provides towels! I can’t remember the last time a dive boat provided towels. The Riviera offers a dive service missing from South-ern California, the ability to dive Orange County sites removed from the beach. I love the ability to get in two boat dives and be on my way home by noon to pursue other activities. Would I dive it again? You bet! In fact, I have! A two tank trip costs $89. Reserve your spot today by calling 949-443-3858.

In case you missed it…The July meeting featured Patrick Smith from Coastal Maritime Archeology Re-sources (“CMAR”). Did you know that there are a number of shipwrecks in California? Well, it’s true and Patrick has been researching and documenting them for years. Patrick has been diving since 1961 and has been an instructor since 1979. Currently Patrick has logged over 6,000 dives. (Now, that is a lot of diving!) Patrick holds a masters degree in history and is co-author of Shipwrecks of Southern California. He is also a member of the LA Maritime Museum Research Society. Needless to say, Patrick is a wealth of knowledge with regard to the shipwrecks in

California! I must say we were a captivated group as Patrick went through and talked about a number of various shipwrecks. He shared stories about how the fog would roll in and with the old navigation charts, ships would get off track and turn right into islands along the coastline. You don’t have to dive far to find one! In fact he shared that there is a ship that you don’t have to dive for at all, as it’s right there at the beach. Of course, it takes a lot of hard work to get at this one, as you have to dig the sand away to get at it. But there were lots of pictures of various ships like the Winfield Scott that sunk in 1853, the SS Cuba that sunk in 1923, the Comet, GW Prescott of 1879, AGGI and the list goes on. His stories in-cluded various time periods throughout his-tory like times of seal poaching or times of human smuggling or times of shipping wheat and barley during the war relief. They were great stories and great pictures depicting our Californian maritime history. The sad part of the evening was that we just ran out of time and everyone wanted to hear more stories. Patrick, please come back and share your passion of maritime history with us again soon! Until then, check out his book or go dive a shipwreck!
