t raversing the Ayrshire/ Renfrewshire border, from the crouching morn-ing mists to the last fading star, Ladyland House has proudly kept watch for almost two centuries. Embraced by the lush greenery of extensive

grounds, captured in sonnet and steeped in the lore of a flurry of Scot’s tales, this house is as rich in history as the lands that surround it.

The allure of her beauty comes as much from the magnificent house as her location. Going but moments from her door, the lands teem with local legend. Ancient ‘elf-furrows’, a waterfall, period sundials, the Ladyland Burn, the Smuggler’s Cave, the guardian ‘maighdean uaine’, the ‘De’il’s Chuckie Stane’ and the Cat Craig are but a few of Ladyland’s topographical treasures begging to be explored. In addition to the many home-grown sites of interest, Ladyland House is perfectly placed to enjoy unspoilt country walks, horse-riding, golf and water sports at Castle Semple Loch.

Just 15 miles from Glasgow, and 17 from the seaside town of Ayr, an enviable host of amenities is easiy reached when required, allowing the enjoyment of uninterrupted rural privacy. The heart of the city is just 20 minutes by car, with Prestwick International Airport and Glasgow Airport 15 and 20 miles away, respectively.

Quality education is provided in neighbouring towns and the city, by prestigious independent schools and high-performing state schools, including St. Columba’s, Notre Dame High School, Gryffe High School and Ladywell School.

Ladyland is the perfect place for those who appreciate her folklore as much as her indisputable grandeur.

THE PERFECT MARRIAGE oF period splendour and

Modern fixtures

a sweeping, tree-lined driveway sets a grand stage for Ladyland House. A particularly picturesque example of Scotland’s architectural ‘father’ David Hamilton’s work, set in 12 acres of spectacular land, you can’t

help but be utterly bewitched by this A-listed Georgian mansion. Crafted by the man behind some of Scotland’s most notable buildings, Lennox Castle and the instantly recognizable Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (The Royal Exchange), this house is a treasure-trove of antiquity; the architect’s signature tartan-checked window panes and bold corner quoins hint to how special this property really is. The perfect marriage of period splendour and modern fixtures; all fall under her spell.

universally considered as the ‘father of Glasgow’s architecture’, David Hamilton was an accomplished

mason before turning his talents to archi-tecture in his thirties. His deep appreciation for masonry is echoed in the bold stone-work featured in his buildings.

Fortifying his reputation with the Hutchesons’ Hall Hospital, he began de-signing lavish country houses and palatial retreats for Scotland’s aristocracy, such as the now demolished Hamilton Palace. Sadly, much of his finest work has been destroyed over the years, though The Nel-son Monument, The Royal Exchange and The Cleland Testimonial Building, among others, still stand today.

An active member of 19th century Glasgow’s ‘beau monde’, Hamilton was a member of the city’s Dilettante Society working for the improvement of fine arts. He was held in such regard by his peers, that a public dinner was held in 1840 where he was presented with a gold casket containing £500. He died in 1843, at the age of 75, and is buried in the New Burial Ground, Glasgow Cathedral.

outside, generous grounds synonymous with the luxury inside complete this tranquil country estate. Vast manicured lawns and mature woodland frame the house, with a sizeable grazing paddock available for horses. Watching the sunlight glance through the trees, Ladyland House provides more beauty than even a postcard could hold.
