TODAY’S GAME The #6/5-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols (2-0) continues plays in its second of three consecutive road games traveling to Charlottesville, Virginia, for a game against the #12/17-ranked Virginia Cavaliers (3-0) on Sun., Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. This marks the Lady Vols fi rst trip to UVA to play a game during the regular season. Tennessee opened the fi rst week of the season with a win over #7/4-ranked Baylor (74-65) in Knoxville and picked up a 91-53 victory over Texas Tech in San Antonio. UT, 2-0 in preseason exhibi-tions, will start a senior less team for the fi rst time in the 36-year tenure of Coach Pat Summitt.

LADY VOLS AT A GLANCE This is the Lady Vols’ 36th season under Head Coach Pat Summitt…She has compiled a staggering 1,007-193 overall record… Collected her record 1000th coach-ing win with a 73-43 decision over Georgia on Feb. 5, 2009… She passed Dean Smith (879 wins) for most NCAA collegiate basketball wins of all-time with a 75-54 victory over Purdue on Mar. 22, 2005 …Her 2006-07 and 2007-08 squads were crowned as the NCAA Champions producing the program’s seventh and eighth titles…Last sea-son, UT fi nished with a 22-11 overall record and lost in the First Round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

This season, UT returned 10 letterwinners and welcomed a talented three player rookie class…The 2009-10 season marked the Lady Vol debut for freshmen: #4 Ka-miko Williams, a 5-11 guard from Clarksville, Tenn., #13 Taber Spani, a 6-1 forward/guard from Lee’s Summit, Mo., and #34 Faith Dupree, a 6-3 forward/center from Knoxville, Tenn.

OUR SCHEDULE THIS WEEK Tennessee jumped straight into the frying pan to start the 2009-10 campaign play-ing three games in the fi rst week of action. The Lady Vols opened the season with a tough 74-65 win over #7/4-ranked Baylor on Nov. 15 in Knoxville. UT traveled next to face Texas Tech in San Antonio in the ESPNU Road to the Championship on Nov. 17 (91-53 win), and concludes the week with a trip to #12/17-ranked Virginia in Charlot-tesville on Nov. 22.

ON THIS DAY IN LADY VOL BASKETBALL HISTORY UT is 4-3 in games played on Nov. 22. The Lady Vols are 4-3 at home, 0-0 on the road and 0-0 on neutral courts. The last time out on Nov. 22, the Lady Vols dropped a game to the USA National Team, 82-58, at Thompson-Boling Arena in 1995.

LOOKING BACK Last year at this time, the #7/6-ranked Lady Vols were 2-1 on the campaign re-bounding with a narrow win at Chattanooga (66-63) after having been stunned by the Virginia Cavaliers, 83-82, in Knoxville four days earlier. The Cavaliers became just the 10th team all-time to defeat Tennessee on The Summitt and it was the 19th home loss ever in the building.

LADY VOLS ON TV Currently, a record 27 of 29 Lady Vol regular season games are slated for televi-sion this season airing on ESPN2 (5 games), ESPNU (5 games), FSN/FOX Sports and SportSouth (10), Comcast Southeast Sports (4), SEC Network (3). This is the fi rst time in 13 meetings that the Lady Vols travel to Charlottesville for a regular season contest.

This will be UT’s fi rst trip to Murfreesboro since associate head coach Holly Warlick’s senior season of 1979-80.Bruin Head Coach Nikki Caldwell played at UT from 1990-94 and was a Lady Vol assistant from 2002-08.The Lady Vols boast a perfect 9-0 record all-time against the Colonials after a 71-59 win last season.

In 2008-09, Summitt trotted out the youngest lineup in her career with fresh-men Bass, Johnson, Stricklen, and sophomores Baugh and Bjorklund.

Stricklen’s fi rst career double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds keyed a 20-point halftime comeback at Rutgers.

The Cardinals will become the 180th all-time team and 12th current BIG EAST team to face UT.

Stricklen scored eight of UT’s 11 overtime points en route to 25 for the game to topple the #3/4-ranked Cardinal in 2008.

Glory Johnson posted a double double (17 pts, 12 rebs) in her fi rst career game in the Orange & White vs. USF.

Angie Bjorklund’s six threes spurred her to tie a career-high with 29 points as UT snapped ODU’s 29-game home winning streak.Last season, the Sooners foiled Coach Summitt’s fi rst attempt at career win No. 1,000. Baugh re-injured her ACL in OKC.Stricklen’s double double (13 pts, 10 rebs) helped make S.C. the fourth team the Lady Vols have beaten 40 times.

After posting two wins against MSU last season, the Bulldogs re-main the only SEC school to have never beaten UT.

Bjorklund knocked down six threes and scored 25 points against UF in the SEC Tourney to avenge the Gators regular season win.

On Senior Day, Alex Fuller scored 17 points and grabbed 14 re-bounds to keep Vandy from its fi rst win in Knoxville.The Lady Vols downed the Lady Bulldogs for Coach Summitt’s 1,000th career win on Feb. 5 behind Johnson’s 20 pt, 10 reb game.

Bjorklund’s 21 points were not enough as the Lady Tigers downed UT 63-61 in Baton Rouge last season.

The Tigers became the fi rst team since 2003-04 to beat UT twice in a season.UT hasn’t lost to the Gamecocks since Jan. 23, 1980, in Columbia, a streak of 36 consecutive games.Stricklen scored 11 points in her fi rst trip back to her home state of Arkansas, and UT won 76-67.

Since 2002, the series record is 9-7 in favor of UT with an average score of 62.7 for LSU and 61.8 for the Lady Vols.

Tennessee owns a 42-2 record all-time against the Crimson Tide, and haven’t lost to UA since March 3, 1984.

UT boasts an 11-4 mark all-time on Valentine’s Day, including a 7-1 record at home.

Alex Fuller was the only Lady Vol in double fi gures, with 12 points, as UT lost, 74-58, in Nashville last season.

The Lady Vols have won 17 straight against Ole Miss, dating to Feb. 4, 1996, when the Rebels claimed a 73-51 win in Oxford.

4-1-1 ON VIRGINIA Virginia sophomore Chelsea Shine led three Cavalier double-digit scorers with a career-high 27 points and UVA defeated USC Upstate, 110-63, on Nov. 19. Shine fi nished 10-for-13 from the fi eld and also registered her fi rst career double-double with 11 rebounds. Monica Wright and Si-mone Egwu added 19 points apiece to lead the all-around effort from the Cavaliers. Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan, now in her 33rd season, coached her 1,000th game after notching career win No. 700 in the season-opener on Nov. 13 at UMBC. Virginia (3-0) jumped out to an early lead, out-scoring the Spartans, 27-12, through the fi rst nine minutes of the contest. That 15-point lead was whittled down to single-digits at the 8:26 mark, 29-21, on a 3-pointer by USC Upstate’s Lesley Daniel. The Cavaliers responded with a 9-0 run however, and built their lead to 17 points, 38-21, with 5:47 left to play in the half. Virginia maintained that comfortable lead and took a 54-38 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Cava-liers kept up the pressure and the lead ballooned to 47 with two minutes left in the game and UVa ended up with a 110-63 victory. Egwu had seven rebounds to go with her 19 points, while Wright added fi ve rebounds, fi ve assists and six steals in addition to her 19 points.

OUR LAST MEETING WITH VIRGINIA The Tennessee Lady Vols suffered their fi rst defeat of the 2008-09 season on Nov. 17 at Thompson-Boling Arena when the No. 15 Virginia Cavaliers upset the No. 7 Lady Vols, 83-82. It was only the 19th home loss Tennessee has suffered at Thompson-Boling Area since it opened in 1987 and UVA was the 10th opponent to defeat UT at home. Six Lady Vols fi nished in double-fi gures, paced by freshmen Glory Johnson and Briana Bass who each tossed in 13 points. Redshirt sophomore Cait McMahan tallied a career-high 11 points and sophomore Sydney Smallbone tied her career-best with 12 points. Rookie Shekinna Stricklen added 12 and redshirt freshman Kel-ley Cain pitched in 10 points in her appearance of the season. For Virginia, junior Monica Wright had a career-high 35 points, to go with eight re-bounds and fi ve steals. Senior Aisha Mohammed

and freshman Whitny Edwards tallied 19 and 13 points, respectively. It marked the second time the Cavaliers have beaten the Lady Vols in 13 tries. Smallbone gave UT a quick 7-0 lead, when she converted a four-point play barely 1:40 into the game. After falling behind 17-11, the Lady Vols went on a 12-0 run to take a 23-17 lead mid-way through the fi rst half. However, the Cavaliers trimmed their halftime defi cit to eight and closed to within three at 45-42 on the strength of a 12-3 run and outscored UT 48-39 in the second half. Tennessee regained a six point lead at 69-63, but was outscored 20-13 down the stretch.

LAST TIME IN CHARLOTTESVILLE After dispatching #20/22-ranked Kansas (92-71) in the Sweet 16 on Mar. 23, 1996, the Lady Vols were set to face #11-ranked Virginia in University Hall on the Charlottesville campus for the right to advance to the 1996 Final Four in Charlotte. The last time UT and UVA were trying to advance to the Final Four in a head-to-head match-up, the Cavaliers won the game in 1990 in overtime, 79-75. It denied the Lady Vols the opportunity to play in the Final Four on their home court. This time, the Lady Vols prevailed over the Cavaliers in one of the strangest comebacks in Lady Vol history, 52-46. UT scored the fi rst two points to take the lead and would not hold another lead in the game until there was 2:27 remaining. In between, UT struggled to a (then) school-record low 14 points in the open-ing 20 minutes and a horrifi c 6-32 (.191) fi eld goal percentage. Tennessee fell behind by 14 points in the fi rst stanza and took a 27-14 defi cit to the locker room at the half. Coach Pat Summitt as-sured her team that it couldn’t get worse. However, her troops would eventually trail by 17, 31-14 with 17:06 to play. Abby Conklin and Michelle Marciniak combined to pull UT within eight points, 31-23 with 14:13 to go. Latina Davis then hit four consecutive jumpers and Marciniak canned a deep two to cut the margin to just three points 43-40 with 4:18 left. Rookie Chamique Holdsclaw gave the Lady Vols their fi rst lead, 44-43, with a hook a shot at 2:27. Down the stretch, the Cavs sent Marciniak to the line six times down the last 39.6 seconds to seal the win and a trip to the Final Four. The Lady Vols claimed NCAA title number four in Charlotte.

WORST LOSS IN SUMMITT’S CAREER For 19 years, Tennessee coach Pat Summitt called the overtime loss to Virginia in the 1990 NCAA East Regional fi nals at Old Dominion as the worst loss in her career. That was replaced last spring by the loss to Ball State, 71-55, in the 2009 NCAA First Round. The 1990 Virginia loss, which denied Ten-nessee an opportunity to play for the 1990 NCAA Championship on its home fl oor probably still ranks as the “most disappointing” loss to Summitt.

TV AT MTSU A state-wide televised broadcast for the up-coming Middle Tennessee-Tennessee women’s basketball game has been announced. The con-test will be shown throughout the state on three MyNetworkTV affi liates, including Nashville’s WUXP (MyTV30) as the fl agship station. Fans in the Murfreesboro/Nashville viewing area can watch the game on Comcast Channel 14. Other stations set to show the game include WAPK (MyWAPK) in the Tri-Cities and WVLT-2 (MyVLT2) in Knoxville. The game, set for 7 p.m. CT Nov. 25, will mark the Lady Vols’ fi rst visit to Murfreesboro in 30 years. Middle Tennessee’s director of broadcasting Chip Walters will handle play-by-play duties, while for-mer Vanderbilt standout Ashley McElhiney will join him on the call as the analyst.

600TH WIN Tennessee’s win over Baylor to open the 2009-10 season was Lady Vol Coach Pat Sum-mitt’s 600th victory over a non-conference team. She is now 601-129 versus non-conference op-position over 36 seasons.

STRICKLEN DOUBLES UP ACCOLADES Lady Vol sophomore Shekinna Stricklen was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week and Lady Vol Athlete of the Week after lead-ing the No. 8/9-ranked Lady Vols to a 74-65 win over the No. 7/4-ranked Baylor Lady Bears on Nov. 15 at Thompson-Boling Arena to open the 2009-10 season. The Morrilton, Ark., native scored 25 points, grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds, dished out fi ve assists and tallied three steals. The game against the Lady Bears marked Stricklen’s third ca-reer double-double. Her 25 points were one off of her career-high 26 points, which were scored at No. 6/5-ranked Auburn last season.

IS THERE A BIG 12 DIVISION FOR US? This season, Tennessee might qualify for divi-sional play in the Big 12. The Lady Vols have four opponents on its schedule from that conference. UT defeated #7/4 Baylor in Knoxville (74-65)... traveled to San Antonio to defeat Texas Tech, 91-53 and will entertain #10/13 Texas on Dec. 6 and #20/16 Okla-homa on Jan. 3 in Thompson-Boling Arena.



ESPNU ROAD TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP The Lady Vols took the ESPNU Road to the Championship (formerly the ESPNU Women’s Basketball Invitational) when it defeated Texas Tech in Nov. 17. The preseason women’s bas-ketball doubleheader, UConn defeated Texas in the night cap, is played in the same city as the women’s NCAA championship. The ESPNU Road to the Championship is an ESPN Regional TV (ERT) owned and operated event. San Antonio is the host city for the 2010 NCAA women’s basket-ball championship.

WE TOOK THE ROAD BEFORE In 2007-08 season, the Tennessee Lady Vols were invited to the inaugural ESPNU Wom-en’s Basketball Invitational in Tampa, Fla., site of the 2008 Final Four. It marked the fi rst meeting of the CP3s -- Tennessee’s #3 Candace Parker and Oklahoma’s #3, Courtney Paris. The Lady Vols registered a 70-67 victory over Oklahoma in 2007 at the St. Pete Times Forum in the ESPNU Classic in Tampa, Fla. Tennessee returned to the same venue a little over four months later to win the 2008 NCAA Final Four defeating Stanford in the title game.

GET THIS... It’s a fact that Tennessee has produced some of the greatest players ever in women’s col-

legiate basketball. It’s a little known fact that there has only been one double-fi gure rebounder in the history of the program -- Olympian and Kodak All-American Patricia Roberts. Roberts hauled in 14.2 rpg (467 total) in her only season as a Lady Vol in 1976-77. She also claimed scoring honors with 29.9 ppg (987 points). In 2006-07, Candace Parker came the closest to a double-fi gure re-bounding average but had to settle for 9.8 rpg.

POLLSTERS The Tennessee Lady Vols will start the sea-son in somewhat unfamiliar territory in the Top 25 Preseason polls released in the last few weeks. The Associated Press placed UT in the eighth po-sition to start the season, while the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll had UT in ninth spot. Last season, UT started in seventh in the AP and sixth in the coaches’ poll. Tennessee’s start in the AP poll is the lowest since the 1985-86 season when UT started in the number nine spot.

HIGH SCHOOL TO LADY VOL TEAMMATES This season marks the fourth time in Lady Vol Basketball history (under Summitt) that high school teammates are taking to the fl oor in a Tennessee uniform. Freshman post Faith Du-pree joins fellow Webb School teammate and UT sophomore Glory Johnson in the line-up this season. Previously, Cherokee H.S. (Canton, Ga.) teammates Debbie Groover and Cindy Ely roamed the paint from 1977-81; Baldwin Co. H.S. (Milledgeville, Ga.) teammates Val Freeman and Lisa Webb played from 1983-88 -- both even tore ACLs one week apart as sophomores, and Shel-byville Central H.S. THE NOD Last season, a record number of players – FIVE – were called on to start for the Lady Vols as rookies… Shekinna Stricklen (starter number 53), Glory Johnson (number 54), Briana Bass (55), Ali-cia Manning (56) and Kelley Cain (57) all earned starting assignments becoming the 53rd-57th fresh-men to earn the honor. Angie Bjorklund became the 52nd all-time Lady Vol to start during her freshman season –she started in 30 of 38 games. Previously, Cait McMahan earned a start at point guard versus Louisiana Tech during her freshman season. Prior to Cait’s starting nod, then-redshirt freshman Candace Parker played and started in all 36 games her rook-ie season in 2005-06. A season earlier, Tennessee coach Pat Summitt liked what she saw out of the 2004-05 rookie class as two players earned start-ing nods during the season. Nicky Anosike played in all 35 games with 25 starting assignments and Alexis Hornbuckle played in all 35 games with 21 starts. This duo became the 48th and 49th rookies all-time to earn starting assignments at UT as rook-ies. The 2001-02 rookie class found three players earn a starting nod as Loree Moore, Shyra Ely and Brittany Jackson all started at some point in their rookie careers.

UT’S SEASON-OPENERS UNDER SUMMITT Over the last 36 years on opening day, the Lady Vols have won 33 times and lost just three contests. Coach Pat Summitt lost her very fi rst game as a college head coach -- a heartbreak-ing one-point decision at home in Alumni Gym to Mercer, 84-83, on Dec. 7, 1974. The next time UT lost an opening game was in Knoxville on Nov. 21, 1981, to Stephen F. Austin, 80-74, in Stokely Athletics Center. Most recently, UT fell in their fi rst contest of the 1999-2000 campaign dropping a 69-64 decision to Louisiana Tech on Nov. 14, 1999 in Thompson-Boling Arena. Until the loss to the Lady Techsters in 1999, the Lady Vols had won 18 consecutive season openers.

ALWAYS A HOT TICKET Joe Arnone, UT Associate AD for Ticket Op-erations, says Lady Vol season ticket sales have been steady despite the disappointment of the 2008-09 season. As of Nov. 11th, 10,011 season tickets had been sold. Last season, over 10,400 season tickets were sold.

THOMPSON-BOLING ARENA • WELCOME TO “THE SUMMITT”

The playing court in the Thompson-Boling Arena on the University of Tennessee campus donned a new look for the 2005-06 season. After Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt passed Dean Smith for most NCAA collegiate basketball wins of all-time with a 75-54 win over Purdue on Mar. 22, 2005, UT named the TBA court, “The Summitt.” The fl oor had a complete overhaul with perma-nent logos of both the Lady Vols and Vols painted directly in front of the scorer’s table; the free throw lanes were painted orange with “SEC” reversed out; the giant jump circle/mid-court TENNES-SEE was given a new brighter color scheme, and

300 WINS IN TBA Tennessee recorded its 300th win in Thompson-Boling Arena when the Lady Vols defeated the Stan-ford Cardinal, 79-69 OT on Dec. 21, 2008. Seven years earlier, UT grabbed its 200th TBA win over the University of Southern California on Nov. 18, 2001, 106-66. UT has now amassed a 308-20 (.942) record since the Orange and White moved into the Thomp-son-Boling Arena to start the 1987-88 season 22-years ago. Along the way, the Lady Vols have produced nine fl awless home records in 1988-89 (15-0), 1991-92 (14-0), 1992-93 (13-0), 1993-94 (15-0), 1994-95 (15-0), 1997-98 (16-0), 1998-99 (14-0), 2000-01 (15-0) and 2002-03 (16-0). UT also registered an NCAA record 69-game home court-winning streak from Feb. 1, 1991 thru Jan. 2, 1996.

JUST 20 LOSSES The Tennessee Lady Vols rarely lose at home. In fact, since moving to the Thompson-Boling Arena for the 1987-88 campaign, UT has lost two games in one season just seven times. UT lost two games in TBA during the inaugural 1987-88 campaign, 1996-97, 1999-00, 2001-02, 2003-04, 2005-06 and 2008-09 seasons. The 20 all-time losses at TBA have come at the hands of just 10 teams: Virginia (2008), Florida (2006), LSU (2008, 2006), Duke (2009, 2007, 2004), Connecticut (2004, 2002, 2000, 1996), Louisiana Tech (1999, 1989), Georgia (1996, 1991), Texas (2003, 2002, 1987), Stanford (1996) and Auburn (1988).

HOME SWEET HOME -- OVER 400 HOME WINS The victory over Georgia on Jan. 31, 2005, was the Lady Vols 400th home win since Pat Summitt took over as head coach in 1974. Summitt has won 91.4 percent of all home games in 35 years producing a 459-45 overall record. Home losses (in the Summitt era) include: six in Alumni Gym from 1974-76; 19 in Stokely Athletics Center from 1976-87; and 20 in Thompson-Boling Arena.

100 POINT GAMES Since 1974, the Lady Vols have gone over the century mark 69 times. The 1987-88 team hit triple digits in seven games to lead the NCAA.

IN OVERTIME Tennessee is 26-14 all-time in overtime games. The most OT games in a year was tied in 2003-04 with four as the Lady Vols went 3-1 in overtime losing to Georgia, 68-66, and defeating Auburn, 68-61, De-Paul, 96-89, and Stanford, 70-66. It tied the mark set in 1996-97, when the Lady Vols were 3-1 in overtime contests losing to Georgia, 94-93, and defeating Tex-as, 68-65, Vanderbilt, 92-79 and LSU, 100-99. UT’s 22 points in the OT against Florida (2-3-05), was the most ever scored by the Lady Vols in a single over-time. UT’s most recent OT affair was a 79-69 win over Stanford on Dec. 21, 2008, at home.

A LOOK AT ATTENDANCE The Tennessee Lady Vols staying power with the home fans is evidenced by the huge numbers who have turned out for games in Knoxville since 1990. Tennessee has won the attendance chal-lenge 14 out of the last 20 years.

The last time the Lady Vols lost on a neutral court was against Ball State, 71-55, in the 2009 NCAA First Round game on Mar. 22, 2009. Since that time, UT is 1-0 on a neutral court.

OVER 500 GAMES VS. RANKED Tennessee’s game versus #12 Georgia on Feb. 16, 2006 was the Lady Vols’ 500th all-time versus a ranked team since the inception of the polls in 1976. UT is an amazing 414-156 (.725) versus ranked teams. The 2008-09 Lady Vols were a dismal 4-8 versus ranked teams.

SEC COACHES TAB LADY VOLS The Southeastern Conference unveiled its sixth annual women’s basketball preseason All-SEC fi rst and second teams, Thurs., Oct. 30, to tip-off the 2009-10 season of SEC women’s basketball. In addition, the coaches voted on a predicted order of fi nish, overall champion and a preseason Player of the Year.

In the closet vote yet, Tennessee was pre-dicted to win the Southeastern Conference regu-lar season championship over LSU by one vote. The Lady Vols were 22-11, 9-5 in the SEC last season, while LSU fi nished 19-11, 10-4 in confer-ence play. Mississippi State, Georgia, Vanderbilt and South Carolina round out the top half of the league with Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Kentucky and Alabama rounding out the lower half.

LSU senior guard Allison Hightower was named SEC Women’s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year. Joining Hightower on the All-SEC First Team were Arkansas’ C’eira Ricketts, Georgia’s Ashley Houts and Angel Robinson, LSU’s LaSondra Barrett, Mississippi State’s Alexis Rack and Tennessee’s Angie Bjorklund and Shekinna Stricklen. LADY VOLS PICKED NUMBER TWO BY MEDIA The Tennessee Lady Vols were predicted to fi nish second in the Southeastern Conference this season following a vote by a select panel of both SEC and national media members. LSU was picked to win the 2010 SEC women’s bas-ketball championship.

Two Lady Vol players were recognized on the preseason All-SEC Team as the media picked sophomore Shekinna Stricklen for the First Team and junior sharpshooter Angie Bjorklund for the Second Team.

LSU’s Allison Hightower was the over-whelming choice of the media for SEC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year with 18 votes, the remaining votes were for LSU’s Lasondra Barrett and Tennessee’s Angie Bjorklund. Joining Hight-ower on the All-SEC First Team were Georgia’s Ashley Houts and Angel Robinson, Mississippi State’s Alexis Rack and Tennessee’s Shekinna Stricklen. LADY VOLS OWN ALL-TIME WINS MARK Tennessee is the all-time wins leader in the NCAA and collected victory number 1,100 against Texas Tech. The next closest program all-time in terms of wins is Louisiana Tech, which owns a 953-195 record. The Lady Vols boast a 1,100-250-2 (.814) all-time record.

STAFFERS HAVE, BUT NEVER A PLAYER No former Lady Vol who has joined the col-legiate coaching ranks has ever beaten Head Coach Pat Summitt. This year Nikki Caldwell (UCLA) and Tanya Haave (University of San Francisco) will try to accomplish the feat. Former players are 0-6 against their mentor.

2009-10 LADY VOL SCHEDULE NOTES Coach Pat Summitt has once again put to-gether a demanding schedule for her squad. In 2009-10, the Lady Vols will face 14 NCAA Tour-nament teams from a year ago and four teams that played in the WNIT. The slate includes three of the four squads who played in the 2009 Final Four, a home match with SEC Champion Auburn and a double-date with SEC Tournament cham-

pion Vanderbilt. With the expanded SEC line-up, the Lady Vols will face four squads twice, in addition to tradi-tional-rival Vanderbilt. Tennessee will go home-and-home with Florida, LSU, Ole Miss and South Carolina.

FRESHMEN AT TENNESSEE When Pat Summitt started freshmen guard/forward Shekinna Stricklen and forward Glory Johnson on Nov. 15, 2008, against San Fran-cisco, it marked the 11th and 12th times in her coaching career that a freshman started her very fi rst game at Tennessee. The list of opening day rookie starters: Angie Bjorklund, 2007, Candace Parker, 2005, Shyra Ely 2001, Ashley Robinson 2000, Gwen Jackson 1999, Kyra Elzy 1996, Chamique Holdsclaw 1995, Tiffani Johnson 1994, Bridgette Gordon and Sheila Frost 1985.

THE NOD Last season, Stricklen and Johnson become the 53rd and 54th Lady Vols all-time to start during their freshman season. Briana Bass became the 55th to earn the nod. Alicia Manning was the 56th and Kelley Cain became the 57th when she start-ed against Alabama. As a rookie, Angie Bjork-lund started in 30 of 38 games. Previously, Cait McMahan earned a start at point guard versus Louisiana Tech during her freshman season. Prior to Cait’s starting nod, then-redshirt fresh-man Candace Parker played and started in all 36 games her rookie season in 2005-06. A sea-son earlier, Tennessee coach Pat Summitt liked what she saw out of the 2004-05 rookie class as two players earned starting nods during the season. Nicky Anosike played in all 35 games with 25 starting assignments and Alexis Horn-buckle played in all 35 games with 21 starts. This duo became the 48th and 49th rookies all-time to earn starting assignments at UT as rookies.

EXHIBITION 1: CARSON-NEWMAN Six players reached double fi gures and No. 8 Tennessee defeated Carson-Newman 124-34 in an exhibition game Thursday night in Thompson-Boling Arena. Sophomore Glory Johnson led the way with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds, and junior Angie Bjorklund scored 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting before making her exit midway through the second half. At one point after halftime, Bjorklund had scored more points than Carson-Newman. “We wanted to focus on what the team brought at both ends,” UT coach Pat Summitt said. “Last year, we would sometimes play down to the level of our competition. Tonight, we maintained our intensity. Last year, we’d get a lead and think the game was over. Tonight, we were thinking execution.” Freshman guard Taber Spani started and scored 17 points in her fi rst game as a Lady Vol. Alicia Manning added 18 points, and Kelley Cain had 16 points. Shekinna Stricklen chipped in 12 points, 10 of which came in the fi rst half. No other freshmen played until forward Kamiko Williams, who scored two points on 1-of-2 shooting, entered with about 6:21 remaining in the game. Faith Dupree did not play. For the game, Tennessee hit 62 percent of its shots from the fi eld, including a 45-percent clip from beyond the 3-point line. Bjorklund and Spani both hit a team-high three 3-pointers. The Lady Vols opened the game on a 16-3 run and cruised to a 64-18 lead at halftime, thanks in large part to 18 fi rst-half turnovers by Carson-Newman. Tennessee scored 22 points off turnovers in the opening half and used their considerable size advantage inside to outscore the Lady Eagles 34-8 inside over the same span. The Lady Vols defeated Carson-Newman 135-55 in an exhibition game last year and have now scored more than 100 points in fi ve of their last six exhibition games against the Division II school. “Overall, I was pleased,” Summitt said. “We played well together. Sometimes our defense was too tight. We weren’t perfect, but we’ve got some good fi lm to look at.”

EXHIBITION 2: DELTA STATE Kelley Cain breezed to a double-double Monday night in a 79-46 exhibition victory over Delta State in Thompson-Boling Arena. Cain, who fi nished with a game-high 20 points, 20 rebounds and seven blocked shots in just 19 minutes of play, loomed large over the Lady Statesmen, whose tallest player still gave up four inches to Tennessee’s 6-foot-6 center. “When she’s playing that way, you can’t stop it,” Lady Vols guard Angie Bjorklund said. “Having that inside presence really helps us, especially in the outside game. Coach (Pat) Summitt says that you win with rebounding and defense and she’s a huge part of that.” Tennessee opened on an 11-0 run and used another 11-0 run to take a 22-5 lead early in the fi rst half. Delta State, ranked No. 4 in Division II, made a couple charges in the second half but never seriously posed a threat. “I wasn’t real impressed with what did in the fi rst half,” Summitt said. “We played in spurts in the second half. The bright spots for us were Kelley Cain and Taber Spani.” Despite coming off the bench in favor of sophomore Glory Johnson, Spani notched a double-double of her own with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Seven of those boards came on the offensive end. “Taber is just a player,” Summitt said. “She just wants to play. It doesn’t matter where. She has a great feel for the game.” Angie Bjorklund scored 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting, while Shekinna Stricklen added 10 points and nine boards. Johnson fi nished with seven points on 2-of-6 shooting with two blocks and fi ve rebounds. Freshman Faith Dupree made her Lady Vols debut Monday, but failed to score in 10 minutes on the court. She did record a block and two steals. Point guard Bug Cooper paced Delta State with 15 points, but the Lady Statesmen shot just 26 percent from the fi eld and turned the ball over 19 times. Tennessee and Delta State last played in 1979 before Monday’s exhibition, but the two programs met in the 1977 AIAW Final Four where the Lady Statesmen defeated Tennessee to claim their third consecutive AIWA national title.

GAME 1: #7/4 BAYLOR The Tennessee Lady Vols offi cially opened the 2009-10 season against the No. 7/4-ranked Baylor Bears, and as in 33 other season openers under Head Coach Pat Summitt, the Lady Vols came away with a win, 74-65. Leading the way for Tennessee was sophomore Shekinna Stricklen, who played all 40 minutes on her way to her third career double double. The Morrilton, Ark., native scored 25 points - one off her career high - and grabbed 14 rebounds, establishing a new career best. Stricklen also dished out fi ve assists and grabbed three steals on her way to Player of the Game honors. The Lady Vols got off to a quick start, building a 10-3 lead nearly four minutes into the contest. However, the Lady Vols shooting would go cold as the Lady Bears took a 26-24 lead into the lockerroom. While UT mustered only 28.9 percent from the fi eld in the fi rst 20 minutes, the Lady Vol defense limited Baylor to only 29.2 percent shooting. The second half belonged to Tennessee, as the Lady Vols outscored Baylor 50-39 in the fi nal stanza. In addition to Stricklen, center Kelley Cain posted 13 of her 15 points in the second half. The Lady Vols used a 16-0 run from the 1:02 mark of the fi rst half to the 16:16 point of the second half to transform a six-point defi cit (20-26) into a 10-point lead (36-26). Junior Angie Bjorklund was the third Lady Vol to fi nish with double fi gures as she posted 13 points. Her three three-pointers moved the Spokane Valley, Wash., native into a tie for fi fth all-time with Sidney Spencer in the Tennessee record books with 133 career triples made. Sophomore Glory Johnson was the only Lady Vol to fi nish with more than four points. The Knoxville native tallied nine points to go with seven rebounds and four steals in 33 minutes of action.

GAME 2: TEXAS TECH The Tennessee Lady Vols made their fi rst road trip of the season and handed the Texas Tech Lady Raiders a 91-53 loss at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. The two sides squared off as part of the ESPNU “Road to the Championsip” - the 2010 NCAA Final Four will be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The Lady Raiders grabbed the early lead, going up 6-2 just over four minutes into the contest. The Lady Vols would respond in a big way. Tennessee went on a 24-2 tear over 10:55 to build a 26-8 lead with just under fi ve minutes to play before the halftime horn. Leading the way for UT in the fi rst stanza were sophomores Shekinna Stricklen and Glory Johnson, who each tallied nine fi rst half points and fi ve rebounds. Johnson fi nished the contest with 17 points and six boards, while Stricklen tossed in 16 points, pulled down seven boards and dished out fi ve assists. Tennessee was not about to let up in the second half, and opened the second period on a 32-4 run over the fi rst six minutes of the half. Junior Angie Bjorklund keyed the run with nine points on three three-pointers over a mere 25 seconds, giving UT a 51-21 lead with 15:56 to play. For the game, the Lady Vol offense was not dependent solely on Johnson and Stricklen. Sophomore Alicia Manning started her fi rst game of the season, and tallied eight points and a game high nine rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Kelley Cain grabbed eight boards and added seven points, while freshman Faith Dupree fi nished with six boards, fi ve points and three assists in 18 minutes.
