“The dramatic story of Lady Jane Grey has captured the imagination of people of all ages and eras — high-stake royal politics, ruthless power-plays, religious controversies, and tragic ending. endorsements “The Westminster Confession says that the ‘whole counsel of God … is either expressly set down in Scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from Scripture’ (1.5, emphasis added). McGraw begins this work by noting the biblical foundation of the principle, especially evident in the words of the Lord Jesus Christ. He then examines the usage within the contemporaries of the authors of the Westminster Standards, and in another section also deals with the most signifi cant objections to this prin-ciple. He treats the need for ‘necessary consequence’ in four major areas of theology, and concludes his book with certain practical applications that aff ect the Christian life and church. This excellent book helps its readers to understand the signifi cance of the assertion not only for the Confession but also for Scripture study in general, and is worthwhile for any one of the sections but especially for the grounding of the principle in the Lord Jesus Christ and the writers of the Scripture.”

— George W. Knight III, Adjunct Professor of New Testament, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary

“McGraw handles this crucial matter with great skill, combining careful exegesis, wide historical scholarship, and incisive practical application. All in positions of church leadership should read, ponder, and follow his wise directions.”

Should we believe that? In this book, Daniel R. Hyde analyzes this controversial claim, bringing valu-able light to this long confessed doctrine. He presents the arguments raised against the descent clause, discusses the various understanding of it throughout church history, explains how the Reformed churches have adopted it, and demonstrates the benefi ts of retaining it as a point of our Christian confession today. The Beauty and Glory of the Holy Spiritedited by Joel R. Beeke and Joesph A. Pipa, Jr.

description The essays in The Beauty and Glory of the Holy Spirit both exalt and revel in the third person of the Trinity. Through an assortment of stud-ies — categorized according to their biblical, doctrinal, historical, or pastoral focus — this book sets before readers the inestimable ministry of the blessed Holy Spirit.

endorsement “What a rich compilation of studies is gathered together in this vol-ume! The doctrine of the Holy Spirit is set before us in all its grandeur from biblical, doctrinal, historical, and pastoral perspectives, giving us a theological feast that is both attractive and satisfying. In these days in which the Spirit’s ministry in the church is identifi ed either with extraordinary phenomena or emotional experiences, this book guides us to a biblical understanding of the Spirit as the One who exalts the incarnate Word through the written Word, and applies redemption to those for whom Christ died. Enjoy the banquet!”

“An Honest, Well Experienced Heart”:The Piety of John FlavelEdited and Introduced by Adam Embry

description “An Honest, Well Experienced Heart” introduces us to the life and writ-ings of Puritan preacher and author John Flavel (1627–1691). In his brief, introductory biography, Adam Embry discusses Flavel’s back-ground, ministry, and theology of keeping the heart, which, for Flavel, “is the great business of a Christian’s life.” Centuries ago, Flavel wrote, “Above all other studies in the world, study your own hearts.” Embry guides us through forty-two short passages from Flavel’s writings that acquaint us with this dedicated Puritan minister’s piety and help us see the importance of this great business of keeping and managing our hearts.

endorsements “John Flavel told his church that he had endeavored to feed them ‘with the heart-strengthening bread of practical doctrine’ in the course of his ministry among them. Indeed, Flavel’s ministry was marked by hard labor and heart-searching, edifying application of biblical truth to his listeners. Adam Embry has served us well by assembling some choice selections from Flavel’s writing for us in this volume. May your heart be strengthened by listening to, pondering, and applying Fla-vel’s encouragements here.”

—Shawn D. Wright, associate professor of Church History, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“John Flavel blended skillfully a robust Reformed theology with a warm-hearted Puritan piety. This made his writings both profound and simple. I pray that Adam Embry’s primer on Flavel’s work will promote a new generation of thoughtful readers intent on loving Christ more.”

— Ryan McGraw, pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church in Conway, South Carolina

Anne Steele and Her Spiritual Vision: Seeing God in the Peaks, Valleys, and Plateaus of LifePriscilla WongForeword by Michael A. G. Haykin

description Anne Steele (1717–1778) has been recognized as one of the leading female hymn writers of her time. In Anne Steele and Her Spiritual Vision, Priscilla Wong demonstrates how Steele was able to see God in diff erent circum-stances of her life and expressed it in three main themes that can be found in her hymnody: the glory of God in creation, faith in the face of suff ering, and hope in the promised glory.

This close analysis of Steele’s hymns not only establishes a more coher-ent and intimate picture of the hymn writer’s life and spirituality but also cultivates a more intense desire for Christians to grow in their faith and understanding of God.

endorsements “Anne Steele, the daughter of an eighteenth-century English Baptist min-ister, wrote hymns that were widely sung well into the nineteenth century. While acutely aware of human frailty, she was also powerfully conscious of the divine power to redeem. Anne’s spirituality is carefully analyzed and warmly commended in Priscilla Wong’s perceptive study.” — David W. Bebbington, professor of history at the University

of Stirling, Scotland

“Anne Steele’s vibrant faith embraced every circumstance of life, whether joy or sorrow, life or death. In these pages Priscilla Wong ably demonstrates that Anne’s poetry always leads the reader straight to the heart of God, the source of all good.” — Faith Cook, author of Our Hymn

Writers and Their Hymns

“Priscilla Wong provides a careful and thorough analysis of Anne Steele’s hymns, placing them in historical context and drawing out their spiritual signifi cance.” — Sharon James, author of In Trouble and in Joy: Four Women Who Lived for God

“An individual’s attitude in worship is primarily determined by one’s theolog-ical understanding of God. If her knowledge of God is shallow and defi cient, this will be refl ected particularly in the hymns. However this is not so in Anne Steele’s hymns, which exhibit a coherent unity of sound theology and rever-ent piety, the former leading to the latter. Credit be given to Priscilla whose remarkably able study of Steele has accentuated the signifi cance of doctrine for piety. I hope this work might enjoy a wider reception.”

A Puritan Theology: Doctrine for LifeJoel R. Beeke and Mark Jones

Hardcover, 1100 pagesPage Size: 7 x 10 inchesISBN 978-1-60178-166-6Retail Price: $60.00RHB Price: $45.00

about eau ors JOEL R. BEEKE is President and Professor of Systematic Theology and Homilet-ics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is a leading expert on Puritanism, a popular conference speaker, and the author of numerous books.

MARK JONES is the minister of Faith Presbyterian Church, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is also Research Associate in the Faculty of Theology at University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa.

descriptionA Puritan Theology: Doctrine for Life off ers a groundbreaking treatment of the Puritans’ teaching on most major Reformed doctrines, particularly those doctrines in which the Puritans made signifi cant contributions. Since the late 1950s, nearly 150 Puritan authors and 700 Puritan titles have been reprinted and catalogued by Joel Beeke and Randall Pederson in their 2006 collection of mini-biographies and book reviews, titled, Meet the Puritans. However, no work until now has gathered together the threads of their teaching into a unifi ed tapestry of systematic theology.

A Puritan Theology, by Joel Beeke and Mark Jones, attempts to do that. The book addresses Puritan teachings on all six loci of theology, covering fi fty areas of doctrine. The book explores Puritan teachings on biblical interpretation, God, predestination, providence, angels, sin, the covenants, the gospel, Christ, preparation for conversion, regeneration, coming to Christ, justifi cation, adoption, church government, the Sabbath, preaching, baptism, heaven, hell, and many other topics. It ends with eight chapters that explore Puritan “theology in practice.” Some chapters highlight the work of a specifi c theologian such as William Perkins, William Ames, John Owen, Stephen Charnock, or Thomas Goodwin on a specifi c topic. Other chapters survey various authors on a particular subject. The goal of A Puritan Theology is to increase knowledge in the mind and godliness in the soul. It was written for theologians, historians, pastors, and educated laymen who seek to learn more about Puritan theology.

endorsements “At last! — a book that addresses not simply a single Puritan writer or a single doctrine but that presents the breadth of Puritan the-ology, and does so not for professional theologians alone but for every believer who wants to know the blessing of this ‘doctrine for life’ in his own life. The authors do this not by giving their own summary of Puritan thought, but presenting a great variety of Puritan thinkers and letting them speak for themselves, going to the primary sources and quoting them at length. This thousand page volume represents a lifetime of research and refl ection by authors who share the Puritan faith. It is a truly magnum opus that will soon become a standard textbook for its subject.”

— Robert B. Strimple, Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology, Westminster Seminary California

“A Systematic Theology, covering the main loci of doctrine, from a Puritan perspective, with insightful comment and analysis from two respected Puritan scholars of our time — what more needs to be said by way of commendation? A necessary text for seminar-ians and all serious students of theology”

— Derek W. H. Thomas, Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology Reformed Theological Seminary

A PURITAN THEOLOGY continued

“In this volume the tremendous renaissance in Puritan studies that has been going since the 1960s fi nds its magnum opus, a truly fabulous resource for all who are interested in and love the Puritans. While nearly as exhaustive as one could wish for, it is also replete with chapters that detail the thought of individual Puritans. Without a doubt, this will be an indispensable guidebook to Puritan thought and practice for years to come.”

— Michael A.G. Haykin, Professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky

“No expression of the Christian faith has excelled that of the great Puritans and those who followed in their steps. This excellent volume by Dr. Beeke and Dr. Jones presents to the reader a rich feast both in academic theology and practical divinity. It deserves to be read, studied, and re-read by all who are hungry to know God better and to know how to glorify Him more.”

The Glory of Grace: The Story of the Canons of DortWilliam Boekestein, Illustrated by Evan Hughes

description An important confession of the Reformed churches for hundreds of years, the Canons of Dort teach clearly that salvation is by grace alone through Christ alone. Yet some people may fi nd it an intimidating document and wonder why it was even written. In The Glory of Grace, William Boekestein and Evan Hughes help our children understand the diffi cult challenges the churches in the Netherlands faced in the Arminians’ distortion of the gospel message. In this story about the Synod of Dort (1618), children will learn about the history and ideas that formed the Canons of Dort and come to a greater appreciation of this great treasure of the Reformed faith and its emphasis on the glory of God in graciously saving sinners.

endorsements “Believers who cherish the biblical teaching of salvation by grace alone through the work of Christ alone will be pleased with the publication of this book. William Boekestein has done a fi ne service for children and their parents (and, I might add, grandparents) who want their chil-dren to know the story of the preservation of this teaching by the great Synod of Dort in the early seventeenth century. May this book serve well in ‘shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he has done’ (Ps. 78:4).”

— Cornelis P. Venema, author of But for the Grace of God: An Exposition of the Canons of Dort

“It’s rare for children —or even adults—in our day to have roots holding them to their Christian heritage. The Glory of Grace: the Story of the Synod of Dort attempts to help remedy this situation. Parents who teach the doctrines of grace can use this book to acquaint their children with an important time in the church’s history, a time when faithfulness to these doctrines was at stake.” —Starr Meade, author of Training Hearts, Teaching Minds and Mighty Acts of God

A Journey toward HeavenDaily Devotions from the Sermonsof Jonathan EdwardsEdited by Dustin W. Benge

description Among the vast body of Jonathan Edwards’s writings—characterized by rich doctrine, a clear and forceful style, a powerful depiction of God’s majesty, the sinfulness of sin, and Christ’s power to save—are his sermons, which contain tremendous wisdom for Christian living. A Journey toward Heaven, a year’s worth of daily devotionals drawn from Edwards’s sermons, captures the true essence of this great preacher’s words and speaks personally to readers’ hearts. Unlike others in church history who have little to connect them to later generations, Edwards speaks across the centuries, as this book of daily readings well reveals, to challenge, edify, and touch your heart for the glory of God as you grow in holiness and conformity to Christ.

endorsements“Jonathan Edwards was one of the most profound thinkers, compelling preachers, and concerned pastors America has ever known. A Journey toward Heaven showcases these gifts in Dustin Benge’s judicious selec-tion of 366 daily readings drawn from Edwards’s poignant and practical sermons. Here is devotional writing at its best—warmly Christ-cen-tered, eminently practical, personally searching. Read this book daily; let Edwards bring the Word of God to bear on your conscience. Pray for the Spirit to apply these short, savory devotions to your head, heart, and hands for your daily and eternal gain.”

—Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids

“Few Christian writers can be mentioned in the same breath with Jona-than Edwards when it comes to heart-stirring devotional writing that is theologically rock solid. Dustin Benge has done the church a great service by compiling these God-glorifying, Christ-exalting, gospel-cen-tered, soul-enriching excerpts from some of Edwards’s magnifi cent but lesser-known sermons. Read edifying passages from Edwards like this every day for awhile, and you’ll be the better for it.”

Lifting up Our Hearts:150 Selected Prayers from John CalvinCompiled by Dustin W. Benge

endorsements “Dustin Benge has made a great treasure accessible for all of us. These prayers of Calvin can now be enjoyed and used, and can be of great personal profi t. A fresh and fi ne volume. A book to read and to practice time and again.”— Herman J. Selderhuis, professor for church history and church polity at the

Theological University Apeldoorn (Netherlands) and director of the university’s Institute for Reformation Research

“Dustin Benge has done the church a great service by compiling this generous selection of prayers by the great Genevan Reformer, John Calvin. Extracted from his luminous Old Testament Commentaries, these fervent intercessions reveal the warm piety that accompanied this theological genius. Calvin’s per-sonal logo was an open hand, holding a heart, extended upward to God with the words, ‘My heart I off er to Thee, Lord, promptly and sincerely.’ This book clearly demonstrates such singular devotion to God. Here is Calvin’s high dox-ology, arising upward from his high theology. And here is his exaltation of God, ascending from sound exegesis and exposition. By reading these prayers, your own heart will be likewise infl amed.”

The Gospel’s Power and MessagePaul Washerdescription One of the greatest crimes of this generation of Christians is its neglect of the gospel, and it is from this neglect that all our other maladies spring. Absent from too many pulpits are the essential themes that make up the very core of the gospel —the justice of God, the radical depravity of man, the blood atonement. In The Gospel’s Power and Message, Paul Washer addresses these essential elements of Christ’s good news and provides a guide to help us rediscover the gospel in all its beauty, scandal, and saving power. May such a rediscovery transform your life, strengthen your procla-mation, and bring the greatest glory to God.

endorsement“In these days of insipid, man-centered, ear-tickling preaching, we need Sons of Thunder who fear God and faithfully preach His Word without fear of consequences. My friend Paul Washer is one such man. May God use this book to reach the lost and to glorify His Name.”

NOTEWORTHY

Evolution ImpossibleDr. John F. AshtonUsing recent discoveries in genetics, bio-chemistry, geology, radiometric dating, and other scientifi c disciplines, the author explains in straightforward language a dozen compelling reasons Darwin’s theory of evolution is just a myth. He discusses areas such as fossil and geological evi-

dences, mutations, geological data, and much more. (Master Books, PB, 196 pgs) $14.00 | $10.50

Life Everlasting: The Unfolding Story of HeavenDan C. Barber, Robert A. PetersonMany misconceptions and misguided searches concerning heaven prevail today. This book off ers a scriptural and biblical-theological framework for understanding heaven, aiming to form Christians more into the image of Christ, to assure them of

their place in heaven, and to show them how a proper under-standing of heaven can change their everyday lives. (P&R, PB, 238 pgs) $17.99 | $12.80

What to Look for in a PastorBrian BiedebachSo how does a church fi nd the right man for its pulpit? This book is designed to assist pastoral search committees by dis-cussing six fundamental areas—the man’s preaching, his duties in addition to preach-ing, his practical theology compared with his written theology, his character, his the-

ology, and how churches can fi nd such a man. (Day One, PB, 200 pgs) $16.00 | $12.00

The Crook in the LotThomas Boston First published in 1737 this book holds a special place among the tremendous amount of Puritan literature that was pro-duced during that time. Thomas Boston was renowned for his clearly understood English and the manner in which he maintained that clarity while conveying

messages of great depth. The Crook in the Lot is introduced to us by J. I. Packer. In an extensive prologue he shows how Boston’s advice remains deeply relevant today. Boston was not preaching merely from his theological understanding, he was speaking from direct personal experience. Boston had real “thorns” to deal with himself, ranging from his wife’s para-lyzing depression to his own experiences living for years with

what were probably kidney stones. He brings his own unique combination of wonderfully profound and yet immensely practical advice to bear to give us a work of lasting impact. (Christian Focus, PB, 159 pages) $8.99 | $5.40 or

Ernest Kevan: Leader in Twentieth Century British EvangelicalismPaul E. BrownThis biography serves as a worthy memorial to a leader whose enthusiasm for Puritan and Reformed theology molded the thinking of many young pastors in postwar Britain. First as a pastor who entered the ministry with no formal training, then as principal of Lon-

don Bible College, Kevan contributed enormously to the life and thought of English-speaking evangelicalism in the mid-twentieth century. (Banner, PB, 294 pgs) $14.00 | $10.70

The Heavenly Footman: How to Get to HeavenJohn BunyanThe Heavenly Footman is a single sustained exhortation to run, to run hard, and to keep running along the path of life. Bunyan assumes that readers already know the objective truths of the gospel and concen-

trates on raising consciousness and generating commitment with regard to gaining heaven and escaping hell. Based on the text “so run that ye may obtain” (1 Cor. 9:24), Bunyan shows why and how to run and deploys motivating thoughts that should keep you running and jolt you out of any compla-cent apathy. As Bunyan says, “Heaven beckons: may we ever be found running for it.” (Christian Focus, PB, 73 pages) $8.99 | $7.00

A Treatise of Sin: The Deceitfulness of the Heart UnmaskedAnthony BurgessThese 42 sermons (written in 1654 and newly typeset in this edition) expose sin-ful presumption by a Puritan master who understood the heart of man, true and false conversion, the guile and deceitfulness of sin, religious formality and hypocrisy, and

true life and godliness—an antidote to the easy believism and mere intellectual assent to the facts of the gospel prevalent in our day. (International Outreach, HB, 330 pgs) $35.00 | $30.00

Sermons on Genesis: Chapters 11–20John Calvin; Dr. Rob Roy McGregor, trans. For Calvin, preaching, as the translator notes, was not an ivory tower exercise—its purpose was to passionately instruct and persuade hearers in the truth from one who knew the Christian warfare. delivered—immediate and full of love for the Lord. (Banner, HB, 920 pgs) $39.00 | $28.00

You, Your Family andthe InternetDavid Clark

How may Christians better under-stand the dangers and opportunities offered by the Internet? This excel-lent resource, written by an expert in the field, explains and illustrates what the technologies are and guides readers to draw on biblical principles (such as self-control and

accountability) to help them to apply these to the dangers at hand. It also encourages believers to make the best use of opportunities that arise from judicious use of the World Wide Web.

“Today some two billion people around the world use the Internet. Almost 80% of North Americans are connected to the web. But even as we use it, few of us understand the dizzying array of its applications and implications. David Clark guides us through the complexities of the Internet with simple, clear explanations. Even better, he unveils the spiritual implications of the Internet, both positive and negative. Pastors, parents, and teachers will greatly appre-ciate this book, as will the everyday Christian who, like me, is struggling to keep up with the ever-expanding universe of cyberspace, desiring to use it to God’s glory and the wel-fare of our families and Christ’s church.”—Joel R. Beeke (Day One, PB, 108 pgs) $11.00 | $5.50

Laws of Christ for Common LifeR. W. DaleThese 18 sermons from the late nineteenth-century preacher handle topics such as family life, property, everyday business, ethical revival, sympathy, Christian justice, the grace of Christ as a law of conduct, and more in the context of a congregation feel-ing the negative effects of the Industrial

The Faces of OriginsDavid HerbertMany today assert loudly that evolution is a fact based on scientific evidence. ones of creationism. (Joshua Press, PB, 159 pgs) $20.00 | $15.00

The Gospel and Sexual OrientationMichael Lefebvre, ed.This book tackles a crucial issue of our day—the subject of homosexual orien-tation. The Natural Man’s ConditionChristopher LoveIn this scarce Puritan volume, out of print since the seventeenth century, Christopher Love describes the misery of being with-out Christ and the benefits of being in Him. The author (1618–1651) distinguishes true hopes from false and gives evidences for knowing that one truly is in the covenant of

grace. (Northampton, HB, 176 pgs) $20.00 | $15.00

Saint Paul: Changing Our World for ChristAdolphe MonodConstance K. Walker, ed. and trans. Why does the church need to respond to the spiritual needs of the hour? In his day, this well-known nineteenth-century preacher asserted the church and Christian society needed a model, which he found

in Paul. In five discourses, Monod studies the apostle in light of his “prodigious work,” “tearful Christianity,” “radical conver-sion,” “personal weaknesses,” and “powerful example.” (Solid Ground, PB, 170 pgs) $17.00 | $11.00

Unconverted Sons and DaughtersCarl MullerWhile children are a gift from the Lord and enrich our lives inestimably, parenting is not for the fainthearted — and this is no truer than when our children do not know the Lord. Where do we go when nothing is working? The author draws on Scripture and Christian history to minister to such parents

and to “strengthen their hand in God.” (Day One, PB, 88 pgs) $12.00 | $9.00

The Death of the Savior: Studies in John’s GospelRichard D. PhillipsIn seven short studies in John 19, the author encourages readers to take a fresh look at the amazing—yet too easily overlooked—story of the death of the Savior, Jesus Christ the Son of God. surrounding the crucifixion, noting that at the cross “we gaze upon the heart of our Lord with wonder and feel the warmth of his grace in our soul.” (Banner, PB, 102 pgs) $12.00 | $9.50

Love Your Enemies: Jesus’ Love Command in the Synoptic Gospels and the Early Christian ParaenesisJohn PiperGiving attention to various critical theories of Jesus’ revolutionary love command, Piper presents evidence that the early church ear-nestly advocated for nonretaliatory love, extending it to those who practiced evil

in the world. Such love was key to the church’s own ethical tradition or paraenesis. This edition of the author’s doctoral dissertation is repackaged and includes a new introduction. (Crossway, PB, 273 pgs) $25.00 | $18.00

All Things New: Devotions for SeniorsFrances Blok PopovichThis year’s worth of topical devotions cov-ers subjects such as “How to Pray,” “God Will Never Forsake Us,” and “The Only Sav-ior,” each closing with a Psalter selection or sacred poetry by writers such as Charles Wesley, Augustus Toplady, Horatius Bonar, Frances Havergal, Fanny Crosby, William

Inerrancy and Worldview: Answering Modern Challenges to the Bible Vern Sheridan PoythressOffering the first worldview-based defense of scriptural inerrancy, the author shows how worldview differences create or aggra-vate most perceived difficulties with the Bible, and he equips Christians to respond well to modern challenges to inerrancy by

employing a worldview that allows the Bible to speak on its own terms. (Crossway, PB, 271 pgs) $17.99 | $12.00

Time for Favour: Scottish Missions to the Jews 1838–1852John S. Ross“The cast of characters in Time for Favour features some of the most remarkable figures in the history of missions, includ-ing an archetypal eccentric absentminded professor, a group of gung-ho young ministers full of romantic ideas about the

Holy Land and the Jews, headstrong and sometimes morally weak missionaries and awkward mission boards. It is a story of fallible but heroic men and women who were prepared to forsake everything, even their lives, all because they not only had faith that God was far from finished with the Jewish peo-ple, but they also believed in the priority of Jewish mission.” —From the preface by Mike Moore (Tentmaker, HB, 343 pgs) $25.00

The Soul Sufferings of ChristH. Rondel RumburgOften when we consider the sufferings of Christ, we think of the physical. This book places the accent on Christ’s suffering in the soul. After introducing the subject of soul suffering, the author examines the Savior’s soul sufferings in prophecy (such as the Psalms and Isaiah), then from the New

Testament. This volume includes several appendices on this subject from Thomas Goodwin, Jonathan Edwards, Octavius Winslow, and Thomas Brooks. (SBSS, PB, 320 pgs) $25.00 | $18.75

No Ordinary Marriage: Together for God’s GloryTim SavageA great social tragedy of our day is the underperformance of marriage—marriages that end in divorce or those that limp along, painfully strained and emotionally scarred. This book seeks to help couples realize the unlimited potential of marriage—to

discover how the glory of God can infuse our relationships, increase our joy, and make us bright lights in a troubled world. (Crossway, PB, 183 pgs) $14.99 | $10.80

Christ Is BestRichard SibbesSkilled in awakening and invigorating faith, love, and joy in Christ, Puritan preacher Richard Sibbes opens Paul’s words in Phi-lippians 1:23–24 to show that we only begin to desire Christ above all else when we sense how much He loves sinners, how much He has suffered for their forgiveness,

and how unfathomably kind and merciful He is and has been. (Banner, PB, 80 pgs) $6.00 | $4.75

God’s Unfolding Promise: From Shadows to SONlightLaurie Vanden HeuvelWith selected texts from Genesis to Rev-elation, the author highlights the unified framework and one message that under-girds all of Scripture: Jesus Christ. These 25 studies for children trace the shadows and self-revelation of God’s covenantal deal-

ings and redemptive provision in Christ, and they challenge the student to dig deeper with extensive questions and exer-cises. (First URC/Chino, PB, 212 pgs) $18.00

Samuel Rutherford: An Introduction to His TheologyMatthew Vogan, editorSamuel Rutherford was perhaps the most influential writer in Scotland during the post-Reformation era. Strangely, his theology has fallen under comparative neglect. His writ-ings offer a valuable key to understanding the theology of the Westminster Confession

Select short extracts from Rutherford’s works have also been included in order to introduce some of his own writings afresh. Contributors include Guy Richard, D. Are We Together? A Protestant Analyzes Roman CatholicismR.C. Sproul

In Are We Together? A Protestant Analyzes Roman Catholicism, Dr. R.C. Sproul takes his stand for the cardinal doctrines of Protestantism in opposition to the errors of the Roman Cath-olic Church. Sproul, a passionate defender of the gospel of justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, cites the historic statements of the Protestant Reformers and the Roman Catholic authorities, then references modern doc-trinal statements to show that the Roman Catholic Church has not altered its official positions. In light of this continu-ing gap, he writes, efforts by some in the evangelical camp to find common ground with Rome on matters at the heart of the gospel are nothing short of untrue to biblical teaching. In Sproul’s estimation, the Reformation remains relevant. Are We Together? is a clarion call to evangelicals to stand firm for the gospel, the precious good news of salvation as it is set forth in Scripture alone.

“Truth is precious, for it sets us free (John 8:31-32). In Christ’s church, our unity revolves around knowing what we believe (Eph. 4:12-13). Too often discussions about Roman Catholi-cism and Protestantism are marred by indifference to doctrine or unfair caricatures of each other’s beliefs. In neither case do we love the truth. R.C. Sproul’s book is a masterpiece of fair-ness, brimming with quotations from authoritative Catholic and Protestant writings. In a short scope he gives us a clear view of the central questions of the Reformation. He helps us to see that we cannot minimize our differences and remain faithful to Christ, for the gospel itself is at stake.”

How to Evaluate SermonsJoel Beeke

“Sunday evenings and Monday mornings can be terrible times for a preacher. As we refl ect upon our sermons, what a jumble of confl icting feelings and thoughts swirl around our hearts and heads! Joel Beeke skillfully cuts through our emotional and intellectual confusion by providing a detailed and objective checklist with which to evaluate our sermons. This could transform your Sunday night and Monday mornings!” — David Murray

“A preacher needs to read some part of a book on preaching each month, more or less of it, to think about what he is saying and how his sermons might be made more lucid, interesting, warmer, more motivational, inspirational, convicting and glorifying to the Lord Jesus Christ — what a need to consider this awesome task, and what lasting fruit might come from every such endeavor. We can all improve as preachers. I have to feel that I am a growing preacher, and test such convic-tions by hearing other men I admire whose ministry is a consistent blessing to me and reading what they say about preaching. So it is that these words of my dear friend Joel Beeke have searched and encouraged me. They are fascinating, and I particularly liked them because they were not crushing words, rather sen-sible, winsome, and practical. Thank God for them.” — Geoff Thomas
