RMR PICNIC, CLUB RACE, AND BOARD NOMINATIONSI t has been a warm, pleasant

September. This has been the perfect time of year to drive our Porsches into the mountains to see the changing of the aspen trees.

If you didn’t go to our picnic you really missed out. The day was perfect. It was a sunny day. Not too hot. Not too cold. Erik Behrendsen, Holly Jackson, and their social team knocked it out of the park again with a fantastic event. Several hours of fun and comradery at Bear Creek Lake Park. The event was sponsored by Stevinson Porsche. Thank you Stevinson! Chicken from KFC with all the fixins. Delicious. Stevinson also brought a couple of new Porsches for us to whet our appetites.

Over the weekend of September 15th, we had our annual Club Race. Doug

Bartlett and Art Van Dyck chaired the event. It was their first year of chairing this event, taking it over from Brian Leary who retired last year as Club Race Event Chair. They did a great job! We received so many compliments about how well-run and fun the event was. It was a three-day event, one day more than usual. Doug and Art added a six-hour Enduro on Sunday. This was a first-ever for PCA. So, now RMR has the honor of holding the first PCA Club Race in 1992 and now the first PCA Enduro. Way to go guys!

Nominations for the Board have been made by the nominating committee, and all the members of our current Board have been brave enough to go for another term. Amazingly, they are all willing to put up with me for 2019.

The nominees are:• Brian Lay (1st VP)• Vicki Cox-Jones (2nd VP)• Russ Rydberg (Secretary)• Donna Helberg (Treasurer)• Holly Jackson (Membership Chair) • Tom Champion (Newsletter Editor)• and yours truly, President.

I feel very fortunate to be part of this Board. They are a very hardworking, talented group of people. Importantly, they all work well together and are really passionate about bringing RMR to new heights.

MEMBERS’ CORRALHolly Jackson Membership Chair

WE ARE GROWING! As of the end of August, we have

now grown to just over 2,800 members. And we have 14 new members in the f irst half of September with more signing up all the time! This is very exciting as the Membership Chair. I know as a club, we strive to offer many fun events for members to enjoy! Remember, PCA is run by volunteers. Please thank any Board member, Chair person, and volunteer you come across. It does mean a lot!

We had a good turnout at the picnic. It was awesome to have Stevinson Imports sponsor our picnic. We had a 911 Turbo and a 718 Cayman on display. I loved seeing the bright red and blue of these magnificent cars!

And if you were present, you know we had many raff le items from Adam’s Polishes and Stevinson Imports! Some of our members are sporting some new Porsche clothing items and others will be keeping their cars very clean! If you didn’t make it this year, hopefully you can next year!

I made it out to see a bit of Club Race and the DE on Saturday. This was an event to see! I hope you either participated or came out to cheer on our own RMR members who drove during this event. You could really see the camaraderie amongst all the drivers as I walked around the paddock area. It is all about having fun and driving fast! Remember, there is a nice covered area

to sit and watch. And it’s free! Don’t forget to order a shirt for

RMR’s 60th Anniversary. Just go to our website, rmr.pca.org, and scroll down to the section “Latest RMR News” and look for the 60th Anniversary logo. This will take you to a special page just for us. Don’t wait too long, this website will only be up through the end of the year.

Cheers!Holly [email protected]

Get ready for one wild ride to wrap up another Porsche driving season with our last driving event of the year. Mark your calendars to join us Saturday, October 27 at Front Range Airport for the 2018 edition of the “Cones are a Fallin’ Autocross.”

This year, in conjunction with the autocross we will be collecting toys and donations for Toys for Tots. Toys for Tots is run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in the fall of each year to collect new, unwrapped toys for distribution to less fortunate children in our communities. The goal of this campaign is to allow these children to experience the joy of Christmas and receive a message of hope that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.

Please bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation to the Toys for Tots Campaign, or consider making a monetary donation online to support the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program.

The autocross is open to all makes and models except for trucks and SUVs without a Porsche emblem. So invite your friends and family and enjoy the day. Autocross events are open to all licensed drivers including 16 and 17 year-olds. Minors must have signed parental permission and these forms and directions are available on our website.

Registration is open at Motorsportreg.com. Use the link from our website www.rmr.pca.org. Walk-ins will be accepted, but please arrive early for registration and only checks and cash will be accepted.

NOMINATION BIOS

SECOND VICE PRESIDENT : VICKI COX-JONES I bought my first Porsche, a 2008 Boxster, on Black Friday in 2012. Shortly after my husband convinced me to join PCA. We did our first event, the Autocross School and Autocross, the following spring. My first track event was Ladies Day, an event I went on to co-chair in 2017, at the Colorado State Patrol track. That was when I realized I was hooked on the motorsport side of the club. Since that first year, I have joined the Registration Committee for RMR, went on to become an instructor for the DE program, and I am currently the registrar for Club Race. In the various volunteer posi-tions, I have worked alongside all the groups, and all the people, necessary to have successful events. This year I have become more involved in driving tours. I was a lead car during the Vail to Steamboat tour during the 60th Anniversary Celebration, and I had the wonderful opportunity to lead a group from Denver to Pallisade and back during the Grand Loop Tour. I hope to continue to serve as the Second Vice President and continue to grow our successful Motorsport Program.

VICE PRESIDENT : BRIAN LAY I’m a longtime PCA member with experience in regions on the East and West coasts, including Northeast, Pacific Northwest, Golden Gate, Connecticut Valley, First Settlers, and Metro New York. When we moved to Denver in 2016, I immediately joined RMR and volunteered to chair a track event. I must say RMR is one of the most welcoming regions I’ve transferred into! My passion is track and autocross, and I believe an important function of the Club is offering drivers the chance to experience the full potential of our fantastic cars! Over the years I’ve held Board and Chair positions in many different regions so I’ve had a chance to see how regions have been managed, sometimes well and sometimes not so well. RMR had a successful 2018, celebrating our 60th Anniversary, as well as a wide variety of activities serving our entire membership. RMR is run entirely by volunteers and my goal for 2019 is to welcome more volunteers into all of the Club’s activities.

PRESIDENT : JIM THORBURN I have been a member of RMR since 2002. I bought my first Porsche then and still have it to this day! My first event was an autocross, and I quickly moved on to DE events. I was hooked. The more senior club members must have seen me coming, because I was immediately invited to chair events and become very active in the club. I loved being involved. New friends then have become longtime friends today. When 2nd Creek was closing, I became active in the creation of High Plains Raceway. As a lawyer, I drafted the Operating Agreements for C.A.M.A., the operating body of HPR. I have been on the Board since 2016 and have really enjoyed serving this wonderful club. I look forward to being the President of RMR in 2019 and to bringing as much enjoyment to the RMR members as I can.

TREASURER : DONNA HELBERG I bought my first Porsche, a beautiful little Ice Green Metallic 912E, about 5 years ago. I had so much fun driving that car that I decided to start looking for a Boxster to be my daily driver. Well, before I found my perfect Boxster, a friend had me test drive a 2006 Cayman S that he knew was for sale. I owned it within a few hours! I’ve been pretty active with RMR since I joined PCA 4+ years ago, doing DEs, tours, autocross, and socials. I’ve volunteered in several capac-ities over the last 5 years, including as a Registrar for event sign ups on Motorsportreg.com. Additionally, I’ve worked in the Porsche industry since 1994 and have helped do Pre-Techs for DEs, been on the equipment team for DEs for a couple of years, volunteered on Kathy Fricke’s Social Committee for Club Race this year and helped with planning the Vail 60th celebration. I can’t believe how many activities and fun events this club is able to organize and how active the membership base is. It is astounding how many hard working, wonderful volunteers we have in the organization. I’m glad that I am able to be a part of it! My professional background in Accounting and IT spans 44 years. It has been a pleasure to be the Treasurer for the club this year and I look forward to continue serving on the Board with your support.

RMR-PCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS Nominations for the Board have been made by the nominating committee, and all the members of our current Board have been brave enough to go for another term. Amazingly, they are all willing to put up with me for 2019. I feel very fortu-nate to be part of this Board. They are a very hardworking, talented group of people. Importantly, they all work well together and are really passionate about bringing RMR to new heights. — Jim Thorburn, President PCA-RMR

NOMINATION BIOS

SECRETARY : RUSS RYDBERG It has been my pleasure over the past three years to serve the club in my capacity as Newsletter Editor. I have most recently shifted from that position to Club Secretary. It is that post that I am nominated for and am happy to continue to fill. In addition to my duties on the Board, I am a member of the Drives Committee that plans the routes and logistics for the many tours our club offers every year. I have chaired a couple of these tours including Steamboat and Tarryall, and look forward to doing so again in the future. Over the past two years, I have worked with Maggie Garnett, PCA National Social Media Chair, to develop guidelines and best practices for RMR’s own social media presence so that the club can be well informed of upcoming events and notices via the many social media platforms our members use to stay in touch. I look forward to continuing my service to the club as Secretary and in other capacities within RMR when and where needed, so that we all can enjoy the many activities RMR has to offer.

MEMBERSHIP CHAIR : HOLLY JACKSON Hi Members! I have now been a member of RMR PCA for over 7 years! I started with my Targa “Hobars” and now my husband and I have “Mac”, our Macan. I have been your Membership Chair for about 4 ½ years. Not only do I enjoy meeting our new members, but I enjoy helping them learn about our club and PCA. I also am very involved with the monthly socials and tours. All of these duties keep me very engaged with our membership. It is also helpful being outgoing and always smiling! While working full time for my equipment leasing company, I still find time to work with vendors, restaurants, and local repair shops to get ready for another event! I have learned so much over the years about our club and PCA. I have made many new friends and continue to do so! I have enjoyed giving to the club and hope to continue on serving you as Membership Chair on the RMR Board.

NEWSLETTER EDITOR : TOM CHAMPION I’d been looking at Porsches for a little while when one that interested me showed up for sale. I was on my 3rd Mer-cedes when I bought my first Porsche in 2011: a Guards Red ’90 964 Carrera 4. It was in beautiful condition and was even supercharged! But that turned out to be a problem because none of the Porsche folks would touch it. So off came the supercharger and back to natural aspiration, and I don’t miss the supercharger at all. I love to drive the Porsche, but sometimes it’s a toss-up as to which auto gets to be driven that moment. The Mercedes (a 2005 E55 AMG) is a “sleeper” with 500+HP and 511 lb-ft of torque at ~ 2300RPM. The Porsche, however, gets the looks. So which I drive depends on the way I feel at the moment. There is a slight problem, however, with the Porsche but not with the Mer-cedes. After driving the MB, I feel fine and relaxed. But when I get out of the Porsche, I’m “panting!” However, it’s an enjoyable “panting!” I totally enjoy driving the Porsche, a great car and solid as a rock! I’m the new kid on the block on the RMR Board! I was the Asst Editor when the call came, suddenly, in mid-May 2018 to take over the editorship of the newsletter, and I jumped at the opportunity. I was pretty confident that I could do the job for two good reasons: (1) I’m totally retired and can devote much time to the editorship, and (2) my professional background was in the field of computer programming starting in 1964, with much emphasis on the development of software for satellites/spacecraft. An excellent programmer develops over the years a very strict work ethic of exactness in his job. And that’s what I have. I’m a stickler for things being consistent in a publication. My colleague, Bill Simon, and I are devoted to making HighGear THE first-rate regional publication within PCA. In addition to the editorship of HighGear, I handle all the clas-sifieds for the website as well as for the newsletter. I joined RMR/PCA shortly after buying my ’90 964 Carrera 4. After attending a few socials, I observed and began to realize that it IS the people. I had been welcomed by some RMR folks who didn’t know me from Adam, but remembered my name and greeted me at other socials. I like that!!! What has impressed me so much is (1) the quantity and quality of the driving and touring events we have, and (2) the unbridled enthusiasm always shown by the many volunteers who make our Club the great Porsche Club that it is and will always be! Outstanding! With your support, I look forward to another fine two years of what I very much enjoy doing that has the word “Porsche” attached to it!

TRACK TALK

Dan CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

Our Club Race and Advanced Solo DE featured some of our club’s best drivers. It was both fun and educational to observe them – here are some common themes.

PREPARATION : Every driver had a well thought-out strategy for each session on the track.

The race car drivers, in particular, were constantly attending to their car with their team. They paid particular attention to the small details – last minute cap tightening and liquid level checks under the hood, one last check of the tire pressures, a final lap around the car with a lug nut torque wrench, etc.

ATTITUDE : Everyone is so positive, optimistic, and confident.

COMPETITIVE : Competition among drivers is fierce. Everyone is looking for an advantage, whether it be the car set up, driving line, or where to pass.

INFORMATION SHARING / EAGER TO LEARN : Despite the competition, every driver, to a person, is willing to share information that could make someone else better.

Some examples…• Six of us discussed driving turns 2 and 3 for over an hour

around an evening campfire. That might be boring to some but not to us!

• I rode with a fellow CDI, implemented some things that he was doing, and shortly thereafter I cut two seconds off of my personal best lap time.

• A fellow instructor asked me to ride with her and we specifically focused on braking technique.

RESPECT / AWARENESS : Our best drivers go out of their way to respect others on the track. They are constantly watching their mirrors, and give plenty of room for passing.

DRIVING CONSISTENCY : These seasoned DE solo drivers were not only fast, they were very consistent around the track. The DE was basically an incident-free weekend.

Then there was the Sunday six-hour Enduro Race. Can you imagine driving a two- or three-hour stint in 94 degree heat? I was corner working in the tightest of turns - Turn #8. I can tell you that braking points and apexes were nailed almost every single time - impressive!

VOLUNTEERING : Several DE drivers and club members

volunteered to work at this event – hauling ice/water, corner working, setting up/taking down meals, registration, control, grid, equipment, etc. WOW! Everyone that I talked to said that they wanted to give back. THANK YOU!

FRIENDSHIP : If you weren’t a friend before the event, you were afterwards.

Many stayed overnight at the track – campfires and gatherings were everywhere. It was fun to make the rounds visiting everyone!

CELEBRATE : Whether it was a podium finish or a personal best lap, everyone took delight in another’s accomplishments.

In summary, what another incredible weekend at the track - thanks to everyone who made it happen!

PAST EVENTS – LADIES’ DAY DE

This year’s theme for RMR’s annual Ladies’ Day was “Beauties and Their Beasts.” Sixty beauties brought their “beasts” to the Colorado State Patrol track in Golden on August 11th. The warm sunny weather was perfect for tam-ing those “beasts” on the CSP track. This year’s “beasts” were a majority of Porsches, but other marques’ “beasts” included Audi, BMW, Mazda, Mini, Nissan, VW, and Sub-aru. Driving beauties had a wide range of abilities, from first-time attendees to decades of track-driving experience. This year there were 29 first-time attendees on the track taming their “beasts.”

Ladies’ Day would not be possible without lots of vol-unteers. Co-Chairs Stacy Benjatka-Robins and Elaine Smith-Liedtke did a great job of putting the event together. Additionally, a huge “Thanks!” goes out to all the RMR folks who helped with volunteer positions including registration, instructing, tech inspection, grid, control, corner workers, and classroom instruction.

This year, RMR CDI and Club Racing Chair Vicki Earn-shaw arranged a special surprise: well-known racer Ran-dy Pobst attended Ladies’ Day! Randy did hop-in drives for the black group (advanced drivers). He also taught a session in the classroom to beginner drivers. Classroom instructor Scott Henderson wrote, “Randy’s best pointers included soft, gentle hands on the steering wheel - not gripping too hard and relaxing when going down a straight, [and] being aware of hand tension and loosening it.” (Good advice for all drivers!) In the afternoon, Randy had a great time driving George Strimbu’s 1976 Porsche 911S on the CSP track with attendee Madison Strimbu. (Randy said he loves driving the older Porsches.) Finally, one of the attend-ees discovered a connection with Randy. Not knowing he would be there and wanting to wear something to honor the event, attendee Nancy Rodelander wore a baseball hat that Randy had signed for her 12 years ago at a driving event in California. Nancy showed Randy the hat. Mike Pappas, event photographer, was there to record the moment. (Nancy wrote, “I had the best time ever. I’ve been to about half dozen Ladies’ Days, but this was by far the very best!”)

Ladies’ Day relies on sponsors to help keep the reg-istration fee low. Poudre Sports Car was this year’s Title Sponsor for the second year in a row. Thanks, Zach Schro-eder! Gold Sponsors were longtime Ladies’ Day Sponsors Prestige Imports and Dan Fead of Sotheby’s Realty. Sil-ver Sponsors were Autoworks Colorado and On-Site Tires. Candlelight Tavern was the Bronze Sponsor this year. Tech-nical Sponsors 3ZERO3 brought their mobile shop to as-sist ladies whose “beasts” weren’t cooperating. Thanks to 3ZERO3’s Scott Simpson and his staff - they saved the day

for several ladies! Thank you to all of the generous Ladies’ Day sponsors!

Since Ladies’ Day takes place at the CSP track, our Colo-rado State Troopers benefit in return. This year’s beneficia-ry of donations raised by noontime charity rides and other donations at the track was the Colorado State Patrol Family Foundation. The Foundation supports the families of State Troopers killed in the line of duty. CSP trooper Major Brett Mattson made a special presentation to the group about the Foundation and the benefits it provides. Five hundred fifty dollars was raised at the track. RMR donated an addi-tional $2,000 in lieu of track fees.

The atmosphere at Ladies’ Day is a happy boisterous one. Although there were no roaring “beasts,” the “roar” of the women conquering the track is a contagious uplifting experience. RMR’s Ladies’ Day is the largest women’s driv-ing event in all of PCA. And this year half of the attendees were first-time drivers! Hopefully, next year all the beauties will come back again to tame their “beasts” at next year’s Ladies’ Day!

Ladies’ Day By The Numbers by Bill Allen, Ladies’ Day Registrar

60 Paid Drivers

35 Instructors

29 self-identified First-Timers (about average for the last five years Bill Allen has been Registrar)

While the overwhelming number of drivers used Porsches (from air-cooled to GT3), we had representative cars from the Audi Club, BMW Club Mini subset and Mercedes. We had one Nissan and multiple Subaru WRX/STIs. We had four members of one family driving this year. (RMR consid-ers this a community event, widely publicized as open to all women.)

There were approximately 80 volunteers on site: pit crew, grid, control, tech, corner workers, gate, classroom instruc-tors, Co-Chairs, CDIs, repair techs from 3ZERO3 MOTOR-SPORTS and registration.

Luminaries who have driven at previous Ladies’ Day: Liz Shaw (while Zone 9 rep) and Connie Johnson (while Presi-dent of Audi Club North America) in a beautiful S-5.

Ladies’ Day 2018 is now in our memories. What a great experience shared by 60 excited (and some very ap-prehensive) gals! The day was gorgeous, the weather cooperated, and the smiles were abundant.

I was asked by event chairs Stacy Robins and Elaine Liedtke, and CDI Vicki Earnshaw to walk around the paddock area with Mike Pappas, event photographer. We were to ask several of our lady drivers: “How do you feel about your first day on a race track?”

I must confess that the gals really didn’t know they were going to be quoted, so this is totally impromptu and the remarks are so very honest. I was sorry not to cover more drivers, but it was a pretty busy day.

Mike and I hope you enjoy the pictures and remarks from our wonderful first-time and two slightly more ex-perienced drivers, so here we go:

Car #111 — Danna Tucker: “It would have been a lot easier if I didn’t have to shift.” and “I love my Instruc-tor.” (First Timer)

Car #36 — Kim Thurman: “I know that I have a lot more to learn, but now that I relaxed a little, it’s so much fun!” Then Josh, Kim’s husband, told me: “She was in tears before we came to the track, now look at her.” (First Timer)

Car #32 — Loydene Strum: “The classes really helped me a lot. After my first session and the second class it was so much better. I can’t wait for the third and fourth sessions! Bring them on!” and “All of you work so hard to make this event work for us. You’re all a 10 in my book.” (First Timer)

Car #21 — Bonnie Birckenstaedt: “At first I was ap-prehensive, but now I think the time of the sessions goes by way too fast.” (First Timer)

Car # 993 — Sarah App: “I was surprised when my boyfriend wanted me to sign up for Ladies’ Day. I was scared to death, but I now understand what his pas-sion for track driving is all about. Heck, I could even instruct him now! Joking, of course!” Boyfriend Bryan now thinks he has created a monster. (First Timer)

Car #37 — Joanne Toledo: “I was apprehensive at first, but after the second session, I was much more confident and excited for the last two sessions. This is a lot of fun!” (First Timer)

Car #447 — Jeri Berg: “This may have been my first Ladies’ Day event, but it won’t be my last!” (First Tim-er)

Car #89 — Che’rie Talbert: “This is my second La-dies’ Day event. BEST weekend all summer!!”

Car #40 – Jan Pidhayny: “Two years ago, when I at-tended my first Ladies’ Day, I didn’t even see a corner worker station and what rear view mirror, are you kid-ding me?!? Now, I am more confident and always look ahead, around and behind me, not only when on the track but in my everyday driving. It has helped me to be a much more aware driver.”

The most common thread and remark among the la-dies were that they appreciated the kindness, under-standing and great instruction from their very patient Instructors. We who instruct for PCA RMR/AMR con-sider the Ladies’ Day Event one of our favorites. We all hope to see you next year!

We had so much fun at the Pueblo DE in May that we’ve decided to do it again this fall. Pueblo Motorsports Park is one of our favorite tracks, and the weather should be beautiful! Located near Lake Pueblo just west of I-25, the 2.2 mile10-turn track has some fun elevation changes and a terrific “flow”. We’ve arranged for paid corner workers giving instructors more time to work with their students as well as allowing our more experienced drivers to kick back and relax between run sessions.

If you’re NEW to HPDEs, you will be assigned an instructor to teach the basics and will get plenty of seat time to practice what you’ve learned. You’ll be in a run group with your peers, so you won’t be running in the same group as the more experienced drivers. In addition, novices will be taught the basics of driving on a track during Ground School held before each of their track sessions.

Mandatory drivers meeting 8:00AM Sharp.Beer:30 will commence after the last group is finished and the track goes cold.

Smokin’ Tires and Smokin’ BBQ SIXTY-TWO DRIVERS TESTED THEIR SKILLS AND ATE BBQ LUNCH BUFFET

By: Jonathan Barr

24 HighGear| Celebrating 60 Years | 1958 - 2018

PAST EVENTS

The second annual “Smokin’ Tires and Smokin’ BBQ” autocross event took place on Saturday, August 18th. Six-ty-two drivers registered to test their driving skills on the autocross course and to eat a wonderful BBQ lunch buffet.

The food was provided again by Denny Mildenberger’s Over the Fence BBQ . Denny did not disappoint us with a full spread of BBQ chicken, pulled pork, plus delicious side dishes and desserts. Denny brought out his commercial BBQ trailer to cook up this wonderful feast. The smoke trailed around the Front Range Airport all morning, teasing everybody’s appetites until lunch time.

Event Co-Chairs Jon Barr and Carl Boecher set up a challenging course. It contained two slalom sections, sev-eral hairpin turns and lots of twisty, curvy sections that de-manded each driver’s full attention.

The morning runs went well, with everybody driving the course four times before lunch. After lunch, the sky was turning dark to the west of the airport, so the first run group did two runs to allow time for the second run group. The second run group was not as lucky and got in two runs, but the second run was on wet pavement due to Mother Nature. It continued to rain for some time and the event was curtailed after six runs.

There were numerous people attending their first auto-cross race and they all seemed to have a wonderful expe-rience. Our first-rate team of Driving Instructors were busy jumping in and out of cars, providing guidance and advice to the first-timers and others that wanted to improve their times.

The fastest time of the day went to an Audi Avanti RS and second place went to a Mazda MX-5. The fastest Porsche was driven by our own Club Vice President, Brian Lay, who captured third place in his 1986 911. Some other cars in the top ten times were a Ford Focus ST, a Nissan 350Z, several Porsche 911s, a Boxster Spyder and some Caymans. The full results are listed on the RMR PCA website.

A big thank you to Doug Bartlett- Chief Driving Instructor and head of timing for the day. Also, a warm thank you to Cristina Iordan for handling the Registrar duties. And thank you to those people that helped pack up all the equipment at the end of the day. This event runs on volunteers and without your support it would never have been possible.

Despite the rain-shortened event, everybody had a great time, left with a smile on their face and a full stomach!

Autocrossers,

Thanks to everyone for running a very clean and nearly issue free autocross today. EVERYBODY was in the right heat (green vs. pink), we only had 1 car number issue, the timing lights worked flawlessly, and nobody ran through the lights! That’s NEVER happened before. Great job all!

The results can be found at the following links.

I hope you plan to join RMR for our final autocross of the season on Saturday October 27th. Registration will open on September 27th.

Cheers, Doug Bartlett – Timing Guy

I GET AROUND

Danielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

It came and went again this year, too fast. Two days of hopping in and out of a slew of vehicles, all at my beck and call. And all because, as your faithful scribe, I qualify to be a certified card-carrying member of the Rocky Mountain Automotive Press Association (RMAP).

Each year, a number of manufacturers bring to town a variety of products. And we “automotive journalists” get to f log them up and down the foothills of the Rockies. For free. Unless you factor in the cost of membership in RMAP. Which can still be written off as a business expense. Such a deal.

Oh yeah. Pinch me. Some of the best two days of the year. Even though through the six or seven years I’ve done it, Porsche has never participated.

No worries. There are always some delectable treats to savor. Let’s see. Yeah, an M5 BMW, a Kia Stinger, a Bullitt Mustang, a Subaru BRZ, a Mercedes E430 convertible, a Mazda Miata.

Is that it? Well, no. There was a VW Tiguan, a Subaru Ascent, a Jeep Wrangler Sahara, a Ram 1500 Longhorn Crew Cab, a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, a Nissan Titan Midnight Edition, a Nissan Rogue AWD. And more.

You know what’s coming? Here it is: Is that it for cool cars?

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. One of the great joys of an event like this is the interaction with a slew of like-minded pencil-pushing gearheads. In this crowd, you feel perfectly normal. And they’re very knowledgeable.

I made my “where are the cool cars?” comment to a fellow scribe, and he said “glad you asked. I’ve been tracking it.”

Really! With that, he pulled out his smartphone and went to a site which recorded year-to-date truck/SUV/van sales vs cars in the US. Want to guess the percentage of this group through July this year? 68.3%.

He also tracks these stats by manufacturer. Care to wager on which company is producing the highest percentage of cars,

as of midyear? Did I hear Porsche? Good guess, but wrong. It’s Hyundai Kia at 57%.

Welcome to the modern world. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised. I mean, after all, Subaru is the unofficial car of the Rocky Mountain Region. The standing joke is a $3,000 mountain bike riding on top of a beater $800 Subaru Outback.

Nor was I surprised when I found myself behind the wheel of the Nissan Titan truck. The way these runs work is everyone draws a ride out of the hat for the first leg out and the first leg back after lunch. Then we stop at pre-arranged spots every 20 minutes or so and get into something else. So you get to hop in and out of a lot of … uh … vehicles. Yes, it’s nothing in-depth. If you’re like me, you want to get up and go. So there’s time to set the mirrors and seats, maybe find that favorite radio station … and you’re off.

I drew the Kia Stinger as my first ride. Loved it. An automatic, but it really pulled. I’d say it’s a bona fide 3-Series or A4 fighter.

But, at the first changeover spot, what was there? Nothing. Nothing but the Titan. In all its triple-black how-do-I-hoist-myself-in glory.

I have to say, for a huge vehicle, it did get up and go … and corner, although that’s a relative term. I did have a general idea of what was going on. But it was so … big.

The engineering tour de force? Easily the M5. An MSRP of around $130K. 600 HP. Reminded me of a Bentley Continental I drove a few years ago. Here’s what it’s like. Don’t look at the speedo, because you won’t believe it. Literally, everything on the road, be it a truck, SUV, van or car, is an obstacle to maneuver around. It doesn’t matter how fast they’re going. They’re in the way. All you want them to do is keep doing what they’re doing so they don’t do anything to disturb your controlled pattern through and around them. The thing just flies. With no drama. And it wraps around you - you have no idea about the actual volume and heft of the vehicle. I felt the same thing only once before, at the wheel of a Panamera.

I can’t say the same thing about the Bullitt Mustang. But the snorting bruiser was fun, cue-ball shifter and all. Loved the dash. It’s a digital array of the following: a bar graph tachometer on top, a read-out of what gear you’re in at the lower left and a speed read-out at the lower right. That’s it. What you need, right now, and no more.

Among the stick-shift cars, and there were only three, I actually enjoyed the ’19 Miata the most. Oh, it took a few stints to get the pedals/seat/wheel geometry just right. But, after that, driving was intuitive. And you definitely could feel the power injection for the new model year.

The most opulent? The Mercedes. Nothing even came close. The rep put down the top and pointed out the car’s built-in “air cap.” What looks like a miniature spoiler pops up on the top of the windshield. And a typical wind deflector pops up on the rear deck. It works, especially when coupled to the ventilated seats on a hot day. Or cold day. Although, I couldn’t sample the heated air that can come out of the headrest on chilly days. It’s called a neck warmer.

And, oh yeah, I did have the seat massage on. Take me to the club, James!

Another surprise was the new Nissan Leaf. I drove the last model on the track a few years ago. When I came into the pits, the rep asked me what I thought. I said the car can’t handle. It shouldn’t have been there. But this one … it feels like a real car. A real electric car. With Tesla-like oomph off the line. Range is still only around 150 miles. But, if that works for you and your daily commute, the vehicle should work for you too, especially after factoring in government rebates.

Is this work? If so, it’s the best kind. Although, I wonder how much longer it can go on. I guess I’ll just have to renew my membership and see what shows up next year.

IN THE ZONE

Rich SandersPCA Zone 9 Representative

I just got back from the “Rocky Moun-tain Thunder” Club Race, Enduro and Driver Education weekend at High Plains Raceway. This is one of two PCA Club races every year in Zone 9, each held with an associated DE limited to advanced drivers and instruc-tors. Throughout the weekend, I got pep-pered with the same question, “So how is the racing and DE program doing throughout the country?” There were clearly some under-lying concerns, as the RMR team did their level best to attract registrants, but the num-bers were falling a bit short of ideal. While I had no answer to the situation throughout the U.S., I could only relate what I know about the situation in the zone. I DID, however, ask a LOT of questions and got lots of theo-ries. So I’ll stick to what I do know, or have credibly heard. So here you go… The number of PCA Club Racers at our two events was down this year. While it is a cause for some concern, the financial im-pact is not so much that either hosting region wants to drop club racing. Still, solutions are needed, so it’s right to be asking about and addressing the root cause(s). I think of this as a waving yellow flag. I’ve heard that this issue is repeated across the middle of the country and may not be the case in East or West coast regions. Com-mon sense might suggest that proximity of multiple tracks to PCA Club Racers allows more cross-regional participation. We need to attract more people from beyond our two host regions. DE events that use “run time” within a Club Race weekend make a meaningful con-tribution to keeping the club race weekends

financially viable. Keep that plan. The two tracks that we rent for PCA Club Races in Zone 9 will be on firm ground finan-cially in 2019. Utah Motorsports Campus is in the process of changing ownership and the outlook is positive. High Plains Raceway has a time-tested joint ownership and man-agement structure, with shared ownership among multiple car clubs that have “skin in the game.” We have stability of venues and, hopefully, stable pricing, though location/distance remains an uncontrollable factor. Growing the number of participants in Zone 9 PCA Club Racing can only come from two sources - inside the zone or from people traveling here from outside the zone. Additional participants from outside the zone, PLUS total participation by 100% of PCA-licensed Club Racers within the zone are the only ways to make an immediate impact in 2019. That has to be the primary short-term focus. However, the strategic long-term assur-ance of a healthy club race environment has to come from the “local farm team sys-tem.” This feeder system means increasing general club membership and growing the driving skills and confidence of many more members. Whether through autocross, La-dies’ Days, novice or intermediate HPDE, we need more input at the front of the “ma-chine,” to eventually yield more output at the other end. Toward that end, we ALL need to become ambassadors of the sport. Last Saturday, I randomly met “Gary” sitting on a grandstand bench with his friend. He seemed enthralled with the instructor DE group on track at the

time. I told him that DE driving was a “life affirming” activity. I asked him if he’d been on track before. In fact he had been, right there at High Plains during non-PCA open lapping days. But he said that he’d always wanted to do this with a Porsche and with other Porsche owners. AND that he already had a Porsche. Expecting to hear something like GTI, Camaro, or rental car, I asked him what car he had taken on the track. I was surprised that the answer was “McLaren.” So after one short conversation about signing up at PCA.org, we will be getting him in the loop with the Rocky Mountain and Alpine Region’s track-day calendars. Prior to this, he had NO IDEA of our events, or where to find our calendars. His plan for the day seemed to be to just come out with a friend to hang out. By the way, his Porsche? Well it’s a 2017 Turbo S. It replaced the 2015 Turbo S. He’ll be a new member shortly! Let’s make him welcome and get him into the “feeder system.” So the upshot is for each of us to be an ambassador. Others are generally curious, and we just need to be ap-proachable! Before I leave this monthly note, let me say thanks to the dozen of volunteers from PCA National staff, RMR/PCA, SCCA and oth-er car clubs in Colorado who helped Doug Bartlett pull off a terrific weekend of PCA Club Racing. And also a personal thank you to Dan Carlson for lining me up with Hap Henderson, an excellent and seasoned driv-ing instructor who took me through the paces at HPR - a track that is still pretty new to me! Thank you all!

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA rally is a competitive event in which

contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event

at Porsche Parade

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides a

safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the pr imar y emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an oppor-tunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a mem-bership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program var-ies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Chal-lenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Spor ts Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
