Reactions 1453 - 25 May 2013 O S Lacosamide overdose Fatal poisoning: case report A 56-year-old man developed fatal poisoning after an overdose of lacosamide. The man was admitted to an ICU with lacosamide poisoning. His medical history included hypertension, depression, and epilepsy in relation to an ischaemic stroke 10 years prior; his usual medications included lacosamide. He had ingested 7.0g of lacosamide in an attempt at suicide, and had called a family member. He was found unconscious about 10 minutes later, and presented to hospital with cardiac arrest. The man was administered epinephrine [adrenaline], sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate, with a spontaneous cardiac rhythm achieved. An ECG revealed junctional rhythm with a QRS of 0.206s, a hemi-left anterior bundle, and complete right branch bundle block. Despite treatment, his condition rapidly deteriorated, he developed refractory distributive shock and multiorgan failure, and died 14 hours after admission.
