Business Manager’s ReportBy: James FoyeGreetings members of Local 464! I hope this newsletter finds you busy at work and enjoying your summer with your respective families.

In addition to the regular quarterly newsletter that you will receive from District Council, we wanted to provide this Local 464 newsletter for you to offer you with some local information.

It has been a very busy few months since recently becoming your Business Manager of Local 464. Upon starting as Business Manager, I immediately began taking part in and recently wrapped up our contract negotiations through the Wisconsin Laborers’ District Council for the following contracts: 2018-2020 62-County Building Agreement; 2018-2021 Heavy & Highway Agreement; Wolf Paving and Mid-States Concrete.

“I would like to thank the members for sticking together as a union during this trying and difficult time, and this truly demonstrated the importance of solidarity.”

Through these collective bargaining agreements that we reached with our signatory contractor partners, I believe that we were able to get the best packages for you and our fellow brothers and sisters.

I also wanted to provide you with an update regarding the recent strike at Mid-States Concrete in South Beloit, where 150 of our Local 464 brothers and sisters recently took collective action against the company in order to negotiate fair wages and benefits. The strike only lasted one day, and I am happy to report that we were able to quickly reach an agreement with the company. I would like to thank the members for sticking together as a union during this trying and difficult time, and this truly demonstrated the importance of solidarity.

Work has been very busy, both on infrastructure projects as well as on vertical construction. We are still looking for more experienced laborers to help fill positions with our contractors and are advertising to attract more people to have a career as a union construction craft laborer. If you know someone who would like to apply with Local 464, please have them call the Local 464 office at (608) 244-6400 or they can visit www.union464.org to fill out an application.

With the 2018 Elections just a few months away, I wanted to take a moment to talk with you about the importance of voting. Over the last several years, Governor Walker and the Republican-led state legislature have been attacking workers’ rights – including passing Right to Work, as well as eliminating prevailing wage and PLA’s.

We know that Elections have consequences. That is why Local 464 is interested in creating a local union political committee that will spearhead the effort to talk to our fellow union brothers and sisters, as well as with our families, about different issues so members can make an informed decision when they go to the ballot box in November. If you are interested in participating with this committee, please contact the Local 464 office.

Finally, we have a couple events coming up that we would like you and your family to join with your union brothers and sisters. First, on Friday, August 10, the local union is sponsoring the Laborers Local 464 Family Summer Event at the Madison International Speedway. In addition, on Labor Day, I encourage you to join your fellow Laborers and other union brothers and sisters at either the Madison or Janesville LaborFests!

An Important Message From LIUNA Local 464

UNION WAGESThe Union Advantage

• The average weekly wage for a union construction worker is $1,168/week, while the average weekly wage for a non-union construction worker is $780/week.

Collective Bargaining• By standing together collectively as

dues-paying union members, we have the strength to negotiate and collectively bargain for wages that support us and our families.

Contract Enforcement• Your union contract ensures that

contractors must adhere to paying you a set rate for a fair day’s work.
