ProxySG Initial Configuration

Objectives• Assign a network address to the Blue Coat ProxySG.

• Assign administrative login credentials.

Scenario

This lab walks you through the steps required to configure a ProxySG that has never beenconfigured or that has been reset to its factory defaults.

Your first task as a system administrator is to make the ProxySG accessible on the network, regardless of whether the appliance is just out of the box or reset to factory default settings.

Briefly, you provide your ProxySG with the correct network settings and set up an administrativeaccount. By following these steps, you make your ProxySG immediately available on the network.

Before You Begin

For this lab, you will need terminal software to connect to the ProxySG. The recommendedsoftware used throughout this lab is PuTTY, but you can use any other tool that you are familiarwith, such as HyperTerminal or Tera Term Pro.

Steps

This lab describes two methods that can be used to set up your ProxySG:

• Using the serial cable.

• Using a terminal server.

Your instructor will tell you which method you should use.

Once your ProxySG is set up, you will connect to the Management Console to verify that theProxySG is working correctly.

Method 1: Set Up the ProxySG Using a Serial Cable

All ProxySG models support configuration with the serial cable.

1. Connect your computer to your ProxySG using the serial cable that is provided with the

ProxySG.2. Launch PuTTY, and select the serial connection type with speed 9600.

3. Click Open. The console displays a blank screen. This is normal.

4. Press the Enter key three times, and the welcome screen displays.

If you have pressed the Enter key three times and do not see the welcome prompt, tell yourinstructor.

5. Enter a and press the Enter key to manually set up the ProxySG using the serial console.

Note: If at any time you make a mistake and want to exit the setup console, press the Esckey. This will let you exit the setup console wizard without saving any of the changesyou made.

6. In the next step, enter b to select the Other solution option.

7. Enter network information provided in your student reference sheet at the appropriateprompts. Consult your instructor if you have any questions.

Note: If the desired response is within the square brackets in the setup console, it is thedefault response, and pressing the Enter key will invoke it. To answer yes/noquestions, press the Y or N key.

Once you have answered all of the network setup questions, the setup console wizard askswhether you want to make any changes.

8. If you want to make a change, press the Y key to restart the sequence of questions. Otherwise, press the N key.

The wizard prompts for a username and passwords for the administrator account. Theaccount gives you privileges to administer the ProxySG. The username and passwords arecase-sensitive.

9. Enter the administrator username and password from your student reference sheet at theappropriate prompts.

You must enter two passwords. The console password is used to log in to the ProxySG with the basic access mode. The enable password is required to switch to the enabled or privilegedaccess mode. The enabled access mode allows you to change the configuration of theProxySG. The passwords are not displayed while you are typing.

10. When the setup wizard asks whether you want to secure the serial port, press the N key.

Important: If you secure the serial port, the ProxySG asks you for a password every timeyou access the serial console. This increases security, but if you lose yourpassword, you will be unable to access the serial console.

11. Next, the setup wizard asks whether you want to restrict administrative access to a specificworkstation.

This option allows you to limit administrative access to a client with the IP address that youenter. In a production environment, this is a good idea because it increases security. However, you will not configure the access control list during training.

12. Press the N key to allow any IP address to access the ProxySG.

On the next page, the setup wizard asks whether you want to use a Proxy Edition or MACH5Edition license.

13. Press the P key to select the Proxy Edition, and confirm that you have chosen Proxy Edition asthe trial edition.

You have completed the initial setup. The ProxySG will be available to the network in about 10to 30 seconds, depending on the ProxySG model that you are using. You should see a screensimilar to the one shown below. You can press the Enter key three times to activate the serialconsole, or you can access the URL indicated in the message to go to the ManagementConsole.

Method 2: Set Up the ProxySG Using a Terminal Server

A terminal server is a specific hardware device that emulates a serial line over a LAN. Usually, aterminal server has several asynchronous serial ports and at least one LAN port. Each serial port isassociated with an assigned TCP port number. You can telnet to the IP address of the terminalserver on the assigned TCP port, and you will have the same interface as if you were directlyconnected through a serial link to the ProxySG appliance attached to the terminal server on thatport.

1. Launch PuTTY, select the Telnet connection type, and enter the IP address and port number ofthe terminal server.
