Lab Safety Rules & Procedures
6. Follow all written and oral instructions carefully – if you don’t understand a direction or procedure, ASK!
7. Monitor experiments at all times – do not wander around the room interfering with other lab groups progress.
8. Note contact lenses & sandals. Never barefoot.
9. Wash hands with soap and water after all experiments – try to keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth and body during labs. Any chemical on the skin should be flushed immediately with water – notify instructor before use of eyewash or chemical shower.

2. Do not rinse or place hot glass in water, it will shatter.
3. Hot and cold glass/iron appear the same – OUCH!
4. Broken glass goes in the broken glass tray – use broom/dustpan.

Lab Safety Rules & Procedures
1. Watch for long hair, dangling jewelry and loose clothing; don’t reach over a flame or look above a container that is being heated.
2. Be sure that gas valves are closed when not in use and when leaving the lab.
3. The bottom valve controls the gas intake – opening raises the height of the flame. A flame should never be over 3 inches high – a high flame is not a hotter flame.
4. The barrel of the burner is the air adjustment – opening makes the flame more blue (hotter). Blue is hotter than orange.

1. Make sure the scale is tared (zeroed) before use.
SCALES/BALANCES
2. Use the same scale throughout the entire lab.
3. Never place solids directly on the pan.
4. Never weigh hot objects – it is dangerous, ruins the pans and inaccurate.
5. Electronic balance can mass up to 150 grams.

GENERAL
2. Always read at eye-level from the bottom of the meniscus.
3. Never return excess unused chemicals to their containers unless told to do so.
4. Never stopper a hot flask – the flask will cool and suck in the stopper.
