The new prototype design will be distributed across the U.S. to professionals building a new company showroom.

PDG has been involved in the construction of two of these. The first one is through an independent developer for the Canton, MI store. It is a ‘turn-key’ operation with La-Z-Boy Corporate, which means the developer builds the store and La-Z-Boy has a ten year lease on the property with the first option to re-up their lease.

The second construction is currently underway in North Canton, Ohio as a design-built project through The Delventhal Company. This is a dealer store, like a franchise, and is not a corporate facility.

After successfully completing a 140-acre site development project for Kalahari Resorts all-season water park (the largest indoor water park in the nation), PDG was then hired to complete lead architectural engineering and interior design services for the resort’s new 95,000-square-foot Convention Center, which offers multifunction meeting and event space. The project involved a strict schedule in order to accommodate meeting space reservations.

The Convention Center includes an executive conference center featuring two board rooms, five meeting rooms and a large atrium with clerestory windows for natural lighting. The new facility also has a dividable 7,200-square-foot grand ballroom with a 3,500-square-foot junior ballroom at each end.

The conference center was designed to compliment the African theme of the resort, with carpet tile mimicking cobblestone paths and dark blue ceilings in the west atrium to capture the ambience of the African sky. Structural columns were designed as trees with leafy canopies and four 1,200-square-foot meeting kiosks were designed as African huts, complete with thatched roofs, woven bamboo ceilings, sisal wallcovering and animal print carpet tile.

PDG was selected to provide design and construction administration services for a new 36-bed juvenile detention facility in Sandusky County. The new detention center was needed to provide more space and better security than that available in its 1950’s converted youth shelter.

The 24,000-square-foot facility offers separate cells with associated plumbing, classrooms and a gymnasium. Security features include electronically controlled doors, reinforced security windows and a surveillance system.

Department of Youth Services grant funds paid for 60-percent of the $3.8 million project cost. Construction was completed in 2003.

Juvenile Detention Facility ExpansionIn 2012, PDG provided design and construction administration services for an addition on the east side of the Juvenile Detention Center. The project was approximately 2,600 sq.ft. of multi-purpose space, workshop area, restrooms, and additional office space. The facility continued operations

PDG was selected by Northwest State Community College as the lead A/E for the design of a new state-of-the-art Nursing, Allied Health and Public Services Building. Northwest Community College is located in the northernmost portions of Henry County, Ohio near Archbold, Ohio. Soil conditions at the campus are typical for the general area and include heavy clays and loams that exhibit very little infiltration capacity. The 20,000 square foot building is located on the south side of the existing campus and is physically connected to the other existing buildings on campus.

The existing campus facilities include the educational buildings with main parking and storm facilities north of the buildings thus the new addition and its appurtenances are located at the upper ends of the storm management system. At the location of the new building, the storm sewers and other storm conveyance methods are shallow and small in size thus limiting direct discharge of storm water runoff into the existing system.

Traditional storm water runoff management facilities in this particular instance would result in the introduction of depressions or underground storage containers to contain and delay the discharge of storm water from the developed area. These shallow depressed areas in soil exhibiting low percolation rate could hold storm water runoff for an extended period which could affect maintenance and detract from the aesthetically while underground storage can be a significant cost factor and might require mechanical discharge equipment.

To address the management of storm water runoff for the new building and its appurtenances, PDG designed roughly 11,000 square feet of “bio area”. The proposed “bio area” is essentially depressed storm water holding areas that are filled with a media having nutrients and soils exhibiting high infiltration rates that are planted with native grasses and sedge that require little maintenance, provide a pallette of color in early summer and autumn, that have long root structures and good transpiration rates. The “bio area” is provided with manually adjusted discharge controls so the “bio area” water levels can be varied with the change of seasons and/or other conditions. This last feature provide a laboratory for horticultural student and faculty at the institution to experiment with different moisture conditions for the plants
