Dear fellow alumni, generous benefactors, and the entire La Salle family,

Let us remember – that we are in the Holy presence of God….

I am ecstatic to report that excitement abounds at La Salle, and an extremely high level of enthusiasm is permeating every aspect of our school! A few examples...

• Enrollment is up, including our largest freshman class in several years.• Our De La Salle Signum Fidei program has reached full implementation and involves

every Lancer as well as all members of our faculty and staff. • Called to Serve retreats are being totally launched this year to provide a phenomenal,

authentic faith experience for our seniors. • Our distinctive Lasallian Scholars Institute has grown fully to its fourth year. • Two of our seniors have joined the ranks of many Lancers before them, achieving the

distinction of National Merit Semifinalists.• Complementing their excellent performances, our Pride of La Salle Band now has an

amazing semi-trailer to transport its equipment. • Additional teachers have been added to our faculty to provide an even stronger

educational experience for our Lancers with special needs. •The action of our Lancers on the gridiron is being broadcasted live

on the ClassX Radio network.

The success of these and other accomplishments is directly tied to your support. On the pages that follow, you will note the many names of alumni, parents, benefactors and friends who by their generosity are providing the La Salle experience for our Lancers. I sincerely thank you for your continued support through your commitment of time, efforts, words of

encouragement, and financial assistance. You join our faculty and staff in making a difference in the lives of

our Lancers, and your efforts allow La Salle to fulfill its mission of providing a phenomenal

Catholic education in the Lasallian tradition for our Lancers of today and tomorrow. La Salle is special, thanks to you!

“Leadership, Scholarship, Faith, Service, Community” – these five words are the fundamental pillars of La Salle, the values learned by each of our Lancers, and the principles which all of us who are alumni have engrained into our lives even beyond our days as students at La Salle. These words serve as both a daily reminder and a challenge to our current Lancers who are called to grow in their relationship with God through Jesus Christ, to deepen their faith in word and deed, to learn and study earnestly in preparation for college and their future careers beyond, to step forward in ways of leadership, and to comprehend their opportunities and responsibilities as members of a broad La Salle community.

May God’s blessings be abundant upon you and your family and may the love of Jesus Christ be the light of salvation for all of us. Take wonderful care of yourselves, and remember that the lamp is always on in my window because as Lancers – past, present, and future – we are all bound in unity as brothers for life!

St. John Baptist de La Salle – Pray for us.Live, Jesus, in our Hearts – Forever. We are – Called to Serve.

Forever, know that I care . . .

To the La Salle Community,

Here is an interesting fact for you about La Salle High School. Did you know that La Salle is

part of a network of Lasallian schools ranging from kindergarten through the 12th grade that

has more teachers, schools and students than any other Catholic order in the United States

and in the world? Our founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, founded the Christian Brothers in

1680 with the primary purpose of providing an excellent, Catholic education for children and

young adults, especially for those who may not have otherwise had access to it. In fact, the

Church recognizes St. John Baptist de La Salle as the Patron Saint of Educators. That is our

legacy…excellent, Catholic education for all who are willing to embrace it!

Today, through our Lasallian schools around the country, the Christian Brothers have adopted

a motto: Transforming Lives Since 1680. This motto speaks to the mission of the Christian

Brothers and Lasallian education for over 325 years!

But it is much, much more than a clever saying. It is at

the heart of everything we do here at La Salle High

School. For our students, Transforming Lives spiritually,

academically, socially and physically is our ultimate goal.

And we take this responsibility very seriously.

However, we cannot accomplish our mission without

the incredible support we receive from you, our

La Salle Community. I am constantly amazed by the overwhelming support we receive from all

of you. And I am not just talking about financial support. The amount of volunteers who get

involved in all aspects of La Salle, the businesses that open their doors for field visits for our

students, the fans in the stands at our athletic contests, drama productions, band and vocal

ensemble performances and on and on…all of this continues to amaze me.

And then, when one of our generous Alumni issued a challenge of matching donations to

La Salle on a dollar-for-dollar basis up to $500,000, you responded. It was a very aggressive

campaign that had to be accomplished within a 5-month period. And you did it! La Salle

received $545,863 in that 5-month period, enabling the school to take full advantage of this most

incredible matching gift.

Please know that you continue to play a vital role in our quest of Transforming Lives. Great

things are happening here at La Salle and you are at the very heart of it. I am truly humbled by

the hundreds of committed folks I have met who are helping us achieve our mission every day.

THANK YOU for EVERYTHING you do for La Salle!

The Lancer email magazine is published by the Office of Advancement at La Salle High School. The mission of this office is to assume the primary responsibility for overseeing the fundraising and constituency building programs of the school. La Salle High School is a parochial, all-male, college-preparatory, comprehensive Catholic high school located at 3091 North Bend Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45239, 513-741-3000. Dear alumni, parents, and benefactors,

RECORDS ARE MADE TO BE BROKEN

In last year’s Annual Donor Investors Report, I informed you that we had broken an all-time record in giving to our Annual Fund. Well, you helped us to accomplish that feat again this year. Gifts to the Annual Fund during fiscal year 2012-2013 totaled $1,626,199.36. This was an extraordinary increase of 45% from the previous year. In addition, $378,837.00 was provided to the school through a variety of fundraising efforts by our booster groups, auction volunteers and the La Salle Athletic Department. Total funds generously donated to La Salle were $2,005,036.36.

As you are probably aware, we received a historic challenge from a La Salle alumnus and his wife. They would match “dollar for dollar” all gifts given to La Salle from January 1, 2013 to June 30, 2013 up to $500,000. This was the largest potential gift ever presented to La Salle by an alumnus of the school. The “Lancers Helping Lancers Challenge” was met with an unbelievable response by the La Salle Community. A total of $545,863.00 was generously given in 5 short months. It was truly amazing to see how enthusiastically our La Salle community rose to the occasion and met the challenge. Many of you made multiple gifts to guarantee that we would reach and surpass our $500,000.00 goal. Thanks to each of you who supported this historic effort.

In addition, I am extremely pleased to inform you that we have seen a growth in La Salle’s Planned Giving Society – “The Lasallian Heritage Society.” The Society has grown to a total of 13 planned gifts as of June 30. A new addition to the De La Salle Society Dinner will be the recognition of benefactors who have made a Planned Gift to La Salle. Hal ’64 and Mary Sterwerf will be inducted into the De La Salle Society as the first benefactors to create a planned gift to benefit La Salle.

In an effort to reduce costs and become more “earth friendly,” we are again publishing our Annual Report online versus mailing our publication to our La Salle community. This secures a savings of over $16,000.00. We sincerely hope you appreciate our effort to be environmentally conscious and good stewards of your generous support.

Your support of La Salle has helped us meet the many financial demands necessary to operate our exceptional institution. Parents make considerable sacrifices in order to send their sons to La Salle, and through your generosity and kindness, many families are able to afford this excellent opportunity for their children.

I ask you to please continue to keep La Salle High School in your hearts and minds. Your ongoing support is the primary reason La Salle is the preeminent leader in Catholic secondary education in Cincinnati.

On behalf of all of us, especially the students at La Salle who benefit from your support, I thank you.

Sincerely,

Kenneth E. Barlag ’67 Director of Advancement

Dear benefactors,We attempt to use each dollar you generously provide to La Salle in the most efficient way possible. Achieving this goal was the motivation behind publishing the Honor Roll of Investors issue of the Lancer online for the second consecutive year. Making this publication accessible online will save us approximately $16,000.00. This savings will be used in a variety of ways to advance La Salle and help us better communicate with you, our cherished benefactors.I hope you support the direction we are taking.Sincerely,Kenneth E. PlanneD GivinG societY estaBlisheD In 2012 the Advancement Office established La Salle’s first Planned Giving Society. Named the Lasallian Heritage Society, it was formed to recognize a growing number of alumni, parents and friends of the school who have provided for La Salle in their estate plan in order to maintain the long-term financial viability of the school.

To date, we have been informed of 13 Planned Gifts that will benefit La Salle in a variety of ways. Our goal in 2013-14 is to secure an additional 10 Planned Gifts.

Options to provide a charitable gift or bequest to La Salle include naming “La Salle High School” as a beneficiary of your:• Life Insurance Policy• Individual Retirement Account (IRA)• Charitable Trust• Last Will and Testament• Revocable Trust Agreement

Along with making monetary gifts, these options offer an opportunity to give back to La Salle while providing you with potential income and/or estate tax advantages.

Remember La Salle when you meet with your financial advisor or tax attorney and when you conduct year-end reviews.

Consider Frank Rosenacker ’70 or Sue E. Gilkey of Rosenacker & Associates for your estate planning needs. Offices are located at 5537 Cheviot Road in the White Oak-Monfort Heights area. They can be reached at (513) 923-5232 or through email at [email protected] and [email protected].

Please let us know if you have provided for La Salle in your estate planning by contacting Ken Barlag, Director of Advancement ’67 at (513) 741-2687.

Signum Fidei means sign of faith. It is an innovative program that serves as Student Government, offers Christian Service opportunities, builds school spirit, encourages faith development, enhances self-esteem and improves academics. The curriculum is based on the five core pillars of La Salle High School – Faith, Community, Leadership, Service and Scholarship. The goal of this institute is to help every student reach his maximum potential in his development around the five pillars and ultimately produce a man of La Salle who is focused on the idea of being a servant leader.

“Signum Fidei replaced student government and then went to the next level. We are not just the “rah rah” piece – we come together as a community. We stress that our morals and values should always be with us. Those values are a part of who we are and how we live our lives.” Steve Dalton

Campus Minister Chris Winiarski said, “St. John Baptist de La Salle wrote about the holy audacity of the Magi. That is why the star is at the center of our insignia. We wanted the focus to be our Lasallian faith.”

2010 was our first year of implementation and we divided the freshmen into eight foundations – each named after early Christian Brothers who were key members of St. John Baptist de La Salle’s mission. They are Benildus, Hilario, Wiaux, Rafiringa, Nyel, Miguel, Chatillon, and Barthelemy. The Class of 2014 was our first Signum Fidei group. When they were freshmen, they researched the man their foundation was named after and actually designed the foundation crests based on his characteristics. Signum Fidei is designed to allow students to take ownership of the school and of their project team.

Each foundation is divided into 4 project teams, and each project team is comprised of 6 freshmen, 6 sophomores, 6 juniors and 6 seniors. There are junior and senior leaders assigned to each project team as well as several faculty and staff members. We started Signum Fidei in 2010 and added one class each year. This year is the first year that we are up and running with full implementation. Every single person in the building is aligned with one of the foundations. This includes faculty, staff and administration as well as the entire student body.

Counted amongst the adult leaders are the Principal, the Executive Director, as well as the Head Football Coach and the Drama Director.

Institute Director Steve Dalton explains, “Our goal is to get everyone to feel involved – in missions, in co-curriculars , in mass. We want to help them to get the full La Salle experience. At Kairos, seniors always say, ‘I wish I would have gotten involved earlier!’ We are helping all students find themselves – just as we, as a school, are on a journey to find our identity. We are helping our students find theirs. Our Senior Leaders are finding out who they want to become because of their involvement in Signum Fidei.”

This quarter we are focusing on the pillar of Community. The freshmen and sophomores are working on Goal Log Books and the sophomores are also asked to join a club, sport or activity to truly become an integral part of the La Salle community. Chrystel Wells is coordinating the Junior Leadership Initiative to help our juniors design a project that allows them to develop their leadership skills.

Steve Dalton teaches a leadership class where the Senior Leaders learn what it is to be a leader – a servant leader. They take ownership of their Project Team and it is their responsibility to mentor fellow classmates. These young leaders put in over 40 hours per quarter outside of the school day to plan and implement De La Salle Signum Fidei activities. “To build school spirit we have the Foundation Competitions,” Dalton explains. “We want to get students involved - in going to mass, in supporting our teams, in their own academic success. At the end of the year the Foundation with the most points has all of their names engraved on the Founder’s Cup.”

Steve Dalton, Connie Saho and Kevin Kampschmidt coordinate the Servant Leader Declaration. Dalton explains, “On the evening of April 8, 2014, the entire Senior Class will present their Servant Leader Declaration. In front of their parents, parish priests, faculty and advisors, they will state the kind of man that they want to become in the next five years. When they define what kind of man they want to be, they are defining what we are all about at La Salle. Signum Fidei is truly about our students being living signs of faith as servant leaders.”

We urge students to recognize their God-given talents and to answer God’s call to serve.

Signum Fidei’s Leadership Growth over 4 years

• Signum Fidei currently has 98 student leaders, making it one of the largest high school

leadership groups in the state.

“signum Fidei gave me experiences that helped

me grow as a leader. it gave me confidence, helped me come out of

my shell and i get a feeling of purpose rather than just coasting through school.”

nick Frantz ’13

“signum Fidei teaches us how to lead by showing

all different types of leadership as well as how to be an effective

servant leader for God.” michael hess ’13

The goal each year is to increase the participation of our alumni in the Annual Fund. Much of the success for the increase in alumni support can be contributed to the commitment of our alumni letter writers. Forty-eight alumni graciously volunteered to sign personal letters to their classmates seeking their participation in this year’s Annual Fund. Through the efforts of our alumni letter writers we have witnessed an increase in class participation. Thank you, alumni letter writers. You have helped to make our Annual Fund the most successful ever.

On January 1, 2013, La Salle embarked upon a mission to raise $500,000 in five months. The impetus for this historic effort was initiated when a very generous alumnus of the school met with the members of the Advancement Office and indicated that he and his wife were prepared to match “dollar for dollar” all unrestricted gifts given to La Salle between January 1, 2013 and June 30, 2013. On that eventful day, the “Lancers Helping Lancers Challenge” began.

This meeting was significant in that the potential pledge of $500,000 by an alumnus was the largest commitment ever made by a graduate of La Salle to his alma mater.

The Advancement Office felt confident that if we articulated our goal and clearly defined the objectives, our La Salle family would support this effort.

La Salle community, YOU responded generously. We were able to not only meet, but even surpass our $500,000 goal. That being said, we were all overwhelmed by the level of support we received upon launching our “Lancers Helping Lancers Challenge.” Gifts were being received from alumni, parents, friends and benefactors at levels never seen before. Alumni who had previously never given were stepping up to the challenge. Benefactors of the school increased their gifts and, in many cases, sent an additional gift when they heard about our challenge. The excitement and enthusiasm for this challenge became contagious.

We received constant emails and phone calls asking where we were in attaining our goal. We found it helpful to initiate an update on our website to keep our community aware of the status of our effort. As Director of Advancement, I am extremely excited to inform you that as of June 30, 2013, $545,863 was secured. You met the challenge and surpassed it!

On behalf of the La Salle administration, faculty and especially our students, I extend our sincerest “Thank You” to each alumnus and his family who made such a generous commitment to his alma mater. And to each of you – alumni, parents, friends and benefactors who rose to this historic challenge and raised over $1.0 million dollars for La Salle, Thank You for your heartfelt gifts.

Please know that all of us at La Salle recognize the generosity shown during these past six months and feel fortunate to have such a dedicated group of benefactors supporting our mission. You have truly made a difference in the Lasallian experience of our students.

Sincerely,

Kenneth E. Barlag ’67 Director of Advancement

To accommodate a growing student band program, La Salle High School has used a donation from an anonymous benefactor towards the purchase of a semi-trailer. The result of this donation spurred the “Band on the Move” campaign last spring. In total, over $75,000 in donations and gifts-in-kind were generated to support the purchase and renovation project.

The 51-foot-long vehicle will be used to transport instruments and other equipment to music competitions and performances at half-time shows at football games away from La Salle’s Lancer Stadium.

As the donor said, “We have been blessed to watch the impact the band has had in our children’s lives. We have seen them grow spiritually, academically, emotionally and physically as they have had the opportunities afforded them because those who came before us gave so generously of their time, talents and treasures to build The Pride of LaSalle Band.”

Band Director Brian Fischer said the space is needed. “We keep growing and it’s becoming more and more difficult to pack the previous trailer, which is about a quarter of the size of our new trailer.”

This year’s Pride of La Salle Marching Band features 80+ musicians and color guard members from La Salle, McAuley, Mother of Mercy, Seton High Schools and Ursuline Academy, plus eighth graders from nearby schools.

The band usually performs with several large percussion instruments – including stationary instruments such as marimbas, vibraphones, xylophones, bells and synthesizers, as well as mounted drums, other instruments, field commander platforms and uniforms. The color guard travels with flags, sabers and other props. Last season’s competitive show featured several artistic backdrops that had to be wheeled into position on the field.

The Pride of La Salle Marching Band finished fourth in its class at a national competition held in Indianapolis in November 2012. It was the band’s second consecutive appearance in semifinals and fourth-place finish at the Bands of America Grand National championships, which is considered the nation’s premier high school marching band competition.
