La revista Atmósfera en el Web of Science y Scopus: veinticinco años de publicación(1988‐2012)
Se ofrece un panorama cuantitativo general de la revista Atmósfera bajo un estudio bibliométrico de la indización de sus artículos y del impacto de la misma en el ámbito académico por medio del análisis del Factor de Impacto y de citación de los documentos publicados, empleando para el caso los sistemas Web of Science y Scopus, apoyándonos también en el proyecto SciMago y en diversas bases de datos de corte nacional, regional e internacional. Resumen. Se ofrece un panorama cuantitativo general de la revista Atmósfera bajo un estudio bibliométrico de la indización de sus artículos y del impacto de la misma en el ámbito académico por medio del análisis del Factor de Impacto y de citación de los documentos publicados, empleando para el caso los sistemas Web of Science y Scopus, apoyándonos también en el proyecto SciMago y en diversas bases de datos de corte nacional, regional e internacional. Los resultados se muestran en tablas, en donde su contenido es desmenuzado en párrafos que resaltan lo más importante de cada caso, dejando los listados completos que muestren el estado del arte que guarda Atmósfera después de 25 años de edición. La publicación de revistas científicas en América Latina y en particular en México cuenta con muchas complicaciones para su edición regular por factores como baja cantidad de artículos, calidad de los mismos, temática y recursos económicos que provocan una irregularidad en su aparición. Es por ello que el 60% de las revistas que aparecen en el mercado académico de nuestro país desaparecen antes de cumplir los diez años de vida y solo el 20% de estas alcanzan más de 20 años de existencia y al mismo tiempo de calidad que les permita ser indizadas en bases de datos e índices impresos y electrónicos de calidad. Tal es el caso de la revista Atmósfera la cual en 2012 alcanzó su vigésimo quinto volumen, contando con un cuarto de siglo de vida e incluida en sistemas de administración del conocimiento tan importantes como el Web of Science desde hace más de una década y Scopus con más de un quinquenio de indización, así como en diversas bases de datos de corte internacional. Por tal motivo y con base en su veinticinco aniversario se realiza el presente estudio para mostrar el impacto de Atmósfera a nivel nacional e internacional bajo la dinámica cuantitativa que nos ofrece un estudio bibliométrico de su contenido. Para ello nos basamos en los sistemas de administración del conocimiento científico Scopus y Web of Science a partir de 1988 a diciembre de 2012, obteniendo la mayor cantidad de información posible. De forma simultánea, se trabajó en la búsqueda de información para determinar en qué bases de datos y catálogos nacionales, regionales e internacionales se incluyen los artículos de la revista, para ofrecer así un estado del arte informétrico de la publicación en estudio.

Es importante hacer notar que en el año 2002 se publicó un trabajo similar de Atmósfera en el momento de cumplir quince años de existencia, el cual puede consultarse en www.dgb.unam.mx, y que en su momento brindó un panorama general de la revista en esa época. Estudio. Este se encuentra dividido en tres grandes partes: la primera comprende el panorama actual de la revista en cuanto a su contenido, números publicados, tipos de documentos y números especiales. Asimismo se brinda un aspecto general sobre en donde se ofrecen a nivel texto completo y/o ficha bibliográfica los artículos de esta publicación; La segunda parte se enfoca a la indización de Atmósfera en el Web of Science y a los datos cuantitativos que este sistema arroja sobre la indización de su contenido; El mismo caso es para el sistema Scopus apoyándonos además con SciMago para completar la información deseada, siendo este último un sistema la información actualizado hasta el 2011. Parte 1. La revista Atmósfera. Diez años después de la creación del Centro de Ciencias de la Atmósfera se publica el 1º. de abril de 1998 el número uno de Atmósfera, lo que provoca que solo se impriman tres número del volumen inicial de la publicación, por el hecho de que la revista será a partir de ese momento trimestral apareciendo de forma regular en los meses de enero, abril, julio y octubre. Su contenido se estableció para ser “un medio de publicación de investigaciones teóricas, empíricas y aplicadas en todos los aspectos de las ciencias de la atmósfera, incluyendo meteorología, climatología, aeronomía, así como la física, la química y la biología de la atmósfera. Investigaciones interdisciplinarias también son bienvenidas, especialmente las relativas a oceanografía, hidrología, ecología, silvicultura, glaciología, agricultura y contaminación atmosférica”1. Un punto muy importante a favor de Atmósfera es que desde sus orígenes se estableció como una publicación arbitrada con “pares” de importante presencia y reconocimiento nacional e internacional con base en la especialidad de los artículos. En su número inicial se publicaron solo tres artículos, el primero de un autor australiano y los siguientes dos de investigadores del Centro de Ciencias de la Atmósfera (CCA) de la UNAM, todos ellos escritos en idioma inglés. La revista Atmósfera ha publicado hasta la fecha 25 volúmenes y 99 números, incluyendo un número especial publicado en el volumen 24 número 1 del 2011. De igual manera, de los 458 trabajos que ha abierto a la luz, 426 fueron publicados en idioma inglés y 32 en español. Por otro lado, 455 de los mismos han sido artículos de investigación, una carta al editor, otra carta técnica y un comunicado corto. Es importante hacer notar que no existe una regularidad en cómo se asienta la información sobre la indización de la revista en su contraportada, debido a que cuenta con seis formas distinta de hacerlo y en algunos números la incluye de una manera y en otros diferente o de alguna otra de las seis formas. Atmósfera en las bases de datos nacionales, regionales e internacionales. La indización o inclusión de una revista en bases de datos es fundamental para la difusión de su contenido y al mismo tiempo para la consulta de los artículos y la citación de los mismos. Las bases de datos, catálogos e índices son herramientas de consulta de los investigadores que les permiten obtener documentos relacionados con el trabajo que realizan, por ello desde la década de los 70´s las revistas de impacto han buscado aparecer en ellos y a su vez contar con una dinámica que les permita que la mayor parte de su contenido se índice. Las publicaciones seriadas de mayor impacto a nivel internacional fueron las primeras en incorporarse a estas fuentes secundarias de información, las revistas latinoamericanas se incorporaron posteriormente, pero sobre todo en índices y bases de datos nacionales o regionales siendo el momento más importante la década de los 90´s con la aparición del CD‐ROM. Los registros se incluían en formato bibliográfico y una década después en texto completo. Atmósfera inició su indización en estas fuentes en el año de 1991 y es en el año 2000 que se incorpora al Web of Science como una revista de calidad internacional. Atmósfera está incluida en 16 bases de datos y dos índices impresos. Solo una base regional que es PERIODICA y el resto internacional. En Scopus se encuentra el mayor número de registros indizados con 454, seguida de GEOBASE con 434, PERIODICA con 432 y el Web of Science con 425. En el caso de los índices impresos es difícil determinar el número de registros indizados, pero sí estos pertenecen a GEOBASE como su versión impresa, el número es casi el mismo que los incluidos en la versión electrónica. Ahora bien, ASFA indiza de forma general 82 registros, cuya mayoría se incluyen en su Sección 2 sobre “Ocean Technology, Policy & Non‐Living Resources”, todo esto reflejado en el siguiente cuadro:

Los repositorios son un caso independiente a las bases de datos, estos por lo regular comprenden los registros y el texto completo de los materiales. Atmósfera aparece en tres de estos, dos regionales (América Latina) y uno internacional, todos ellos de libre acceso. El de mayor indización es Redalyc con 428 materiales, el cual se encuentra auspiciado por la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México.

En el caso de los catálogos, estos son de corte comercial o referencial, principalmente para difundir la revista y no su contenido como tal. Tenemos el caso del proyecto más reciente donde participa Atmósfera, que es el Portal de Revistas Científicas y Arbitradas de la UNAM, siendo continuación del proyecto e‐Journal de la UNAM. Latindex también incorpora a la revista de estudio pero solo la describe físicamente en cuanto a su estructura más no indiza contenidos. El total de catálogos donde se incluye de manera formal a Atmósfera es de seis, siendo en su mayoría proyectos de investigación de universidades y organismos gubernamentales.

Como podemos ver la revista Atmósfera es una publicación de calidad e impacto a nivel nacional, regional e internacional y por ello le ha permitido estar en los tres principales medios de difusión de conocimiento internacional como son las bases de datos, los catálogos y los repositorios, siendo los más importante el Web of Science y Scopus, en donde analizaremos su indización.. Parte 2. La revista Atmósfera en el Web of Science (WoS). Por ser una revista indizada en este sistema, su indización data desde el año 2000, pero los documentos abarcan desde 1990. Como se puede apreciar en la gráfica, las citas a los trabajos publicados en Atmósfera han ido en constante aumento de forma regular llegando en 23 años a sumar 1188 citas, un número nada despreciable que le han dado a Atmósfera en el 2011 un factor de impacto de 0.490.

La revista Atmósfera tiene dos trabajos con más de 30 citas, 6 con más de 20 citas y doce con más de once citas. El promedio mayor de citas por año es de 6.50 y el menor de 0.55, en ambos casos con base en el año de publicación del material. Los autores que publican en Atmósfera. La totalidad de autores que han publicado los 458 trabajos de atmósfera en los últimos 25 años suman 481, de los cuales solo dos han incorporado a la revista 24 documentos cada uno ya sean como autores únicos o coautores de los trabajos. De los 425 trabajos publicados e indizados en el Web of Science de ISI de la revista Atmósfera, 160 fueron publicados por autores mexicanos, 47 por autores de la India y de Estados Unidos, 34 por españoles, 31 por argentinos, 26 por investigadores de Dinamarca y el resto por académicos de 35 países distintos de todo el mundo.

Once de los países de origen de los autores son asiáticos, cuatro de los países son africanos, ocho pertenecen a América Latina (incluyendo México), de América del Norte tenemos a Estados Unidos y Canadá y 17 son europeos. Como podemos ver Atmósfera ha alcanzado una internacionalización importante ya que el 65% de los autores son de países distintos al nuestro.

Como podemos apreciar, los artículos son los de mayor indización en el WoS, seguidos de las notas y las cartas al editor. Organismos de financiamiento. En este rubro y de acuerdo a la siguiente tabla podemos contemplar que son mínimos los organismos de financiamiento de los proyectos de investigación que se mencionan dentro de los artículos publicados en Atmósfera e indizados en el WoS. De ellos solo la UNAM aparece en cuatro ocasiones como promota del investigador que realizó el trabajo y en cinco veces el CONACYT. De otros países sobresalen los organismos gubernamentales de apoyo a la investigación, así como universidades públicas.

Es importante señalar que el inglés es sin duda el idioma preferente y los artículos publicados bajo esté son los que se citan en mayor grado. Instituciones de los autores. De los trabajos publicados en la revista Atmósfera, en el caso de las instituciones de los autores es muy importante resaltar para conocer las líneas de investigación y quizá el paternalismo que puede tener la publicación. De los documentos indizados en el WoS de esta publicación se detectó que es la UNAM la principal universidad de donde provienen los autores de los materiales con 115 participaciones, seguidos de la Universidad de Buenos Aires con 21 coautorías, la Universidad Veracruzana con 17 trabajos, el Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology con 16 registros y con once la Universidad de Copenhagen y la Universidad de Salamanca. Así mismo existen 151 organizaciones que cuentan con la participación de uno de sus académicos en los artículos publicados, 36 con dos investigadores y 21 organismos con tres. Del total de citas recibidas a las revistas en esta categoría, Atmósfera ha aportado solo el 0.35% de ellas (1036 hasta 2011). De este modo, de los 9804 artículos indizados de la categoría, nuestra revista de estudio ha incorporado el 4.05% de estos.

Ahora bien, la categoría incluye 71 revistas de impacto cuyo promedio de artículos indizados es muy variable debido a la frecuencia de publicación de los contenidos, en donde las revistas mensuales son las principales, seguidas de las trimetrales (donde entra Atmósfera) y las que se publican cada dos meses (bimestral).

Parte 2a. La revista Atmósfera en SCOPUS. Con el objetivo de contar con un medio comparativo de la información recuperada en el WoS de la revista Atmósfera, se trabajó con Scopus para tener la mayor cantidad de datos que nos permita conocer el estado del arte de esta publicación en cuanto a citas, índice‐h, autores e indizado de contenidos. Iniciamos el comparativo entre ambos sistemas con el índice‐h, en donde el WoS lo establece en 14 y Scopus en 16, dos puntos superior al primero. En este caso de los 446 documentos considerados para el índice h, 16 se han citado al menos 16 veces. Algo muy importante es que Scopus no tiene información de referencia completa de artículos publicados antes de 1996 de nuestra revista. El WoS incluye 1188 citas (comprendiendo también las autocitas) y en Scopus su número es mayor 1486, con casi 8% más de estas. El WoS indiza 425 trabajos, 21 menos de los que están incorporados en Scopus. El número de trabajos indizados por año en ambos sistemas lo podemos ver en el siguiente cuadro y la principal variante en totales se ve reflejada en los años 1988‐1990 y 2011.

En el caso del idioma de publicación de los artículos o documentos, existe una variante importante entre lo que dice Scopus, el WoS y la contabilidad que se realizó directamente en la colección de la revista en la Biblioteca Conjunta de Ciencias de la Tierra. Como sabemos, en todo estudio puede existir una variante entre el 1% o el 2% dependiendo la cantidad de datos con los que se trabaje y las fuentes de información que se consulten, pero en este caso los números varían entre un 6% y 7% aproximadamente tal y como lo podemos observar en la siguiente tabla:

El área temática donde SciMago ubica a la revista Atmósfera es “Earth and Planetary Sciences” y la categoría temática es “Atmospheric Science”. De acuerdo a la categoría temática existen 69 revistas indizadas en ésta, las cuales con base en las citas, el índice‐h y su impacto aparecen distribuidas de la de mayor a menor impacto como se presenta en el Anexo 3, en donde Atmósfera ocupa el lugar 50 de las mismas. Esta lista de revistas nos permite comparar la situación de la publicación ante otras de su especialidad, pero sobre todo ver y conocer cómo se maneja ésta ante un grupo de revistas de corte e impacto internacional y de calidad comprobada. Otros datos. La lista completa de artículos indizados tanto por el Web of Science como por Scopus se puede consultar en el Anexo 3 del trabajo, siendo las fichas bibliográficas que cuentan con un [*] al final son las que están indizadas exclusivamente en Scopus y las otras son las que aparecen en ambas bases. Por otra parte, revisando la base de datos WorlCat la revista Atmósfera está incluida en el acervo de 86 bibliotecas a nivel internacional, cuya mayoría se encuentra en estados Unidos y en particular en California y Texas. Esta base incluye el acervo de más de 12 mil bibliotecas y es un registro fiable de las colecciones, las bibliotecas de la UNAM se encuentran incluidas en este proyecto. Observaciones y propuestas. Por ser un estudio cuantitativo de Atmósfera, las observaciones importantes que consideramos tomar en cuenta para que esta quede lo mejor indizada en las bases de datos y se cuente con información relevante de la misma que permita ofrecer un panorama real de su contenido, son las siguientes:
1. Revisar en los sistemas que la indizan cada uno de los artículos incluidos para verificar que la información incorporada es la correcta o si no existe alguna variante en el título o los autores.
2. Cotejar el idioma de indización para unificar datos.

3. Buscar la indización de la revista en un mayor número de índices a nivel nacional, regional e internacional.
4. Evitar errores de captura y de información en la misma publicación para que esta cuente con una mayor calidad, como por ejemplo las fuentes de indización que la incluyen, logrando así una imagen más limpia de la revista.
5. Promover su consulta ante los investigadores o instituciones especializadas por de correos electrónicos o el envío de la liga a los textos completos.
6. Hacer un estudio de artículos recibidos, rechazados, tiempo de publicación, etc. que complemente la información que se ofrece en el presente documento.
7. Elaborar un estudio de las revistas y otros documentos que los investigadores utilizan para la redacción de los artículos, con el objetivo de conocer las fuentes de información de mayor uso y así su contenido.
8. Realizar un repertorio con todos los documentos publicados en Atmósfera y promover su contenido a nivel internacional.
9. Pensar en un futuro cambiar su formato y utilizar estándares internacionales que permitan ver a Atmósfera como una revista más académica de países del primer mundo.
Estas propuestas y comentarios son expresadas con base al estudio que se realizó de la revista desde el mes de octubre del 2012 a enero del 2013.
