*Lighting the Advent Candle WreathToday we light the candle of HOPE. To begin our Advent journey, we

Hanging Of The Greens
How shall we prepare the house for the coming of the King?
With branches of cedar, the tree of royalty.
-
In ancient times, the cedar was revered as the tree of royalty. It also
signified immortality and was used for purification.
We place this cedar branch as a sign of Christ, who reigns as
King forever, and whose coming in righteousness and justice,
will purify our hearts.
How shall we prepare this house for the coming of the Eternal Christ?
With garlands of pine and fir, whose leaves are ever living,
ever green.
Because the needles of pine and fir trees appear not to die each
season, the ancients saw them as signs of things that last forever.
Isaiah tells us tha there will be no end to the reign of the Messiah.
We, therefore, lay these garlands of pine and fir to signify the
eternal reign of Jesus, the Christ.
How shall we prepare this house for the coming of the Savior?
With holly and ivy, telling of his passion, death and
resurrection.
In ancient times, holly and ivy were considered signs of Christ’s
passion. Their prickly leaves suggested the crown of thorns, their red
berries the blood of the Savior, and the bitter bark, the drink offered
to Jesus on the cross.
As we offer the holly and ivy, let us rejoice in the coming of
Jesus, our Savior.
How shall we prepare our hearts for the coming of the Son Of God?
By hearing again the words of the prophets, who foretold the
saving work of God.
God’s Word is God’s Truth to us, God’s Promise for us, God’s Hope IN
us.
We place God’s Word in our midst to ponder, to read, to hear
and to obey.
How shall we prepare for the journey to the Manger?
-
One faith-filled step at a time, one Advent candle at a time,
one living hope at a time and one Agape Love for all time.
Amen.
Passing the Peace The Peace of the Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us greet our neighbors, extending God’s peace to each other

The Scripture LessonsIsaiah 2: 1-5 (NIV)
This is what Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem:
In the last days the mountain of the Lord’s temple will be established
as the highest of the mountains; it will be exalted above the hills, and all nations
will stream to it.
Many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.
Come, descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the Lord.
Romans 15: 4-13 (NIV)
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through
the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we
might have hope.
May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same
attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind
and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to
God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s
truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed and,
moreover, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written:
“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles;
I will sing the praises of your name.”
Again, it says,“Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.”
And again,
“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles;
let all the peoples extol him.”
And again, Isaiah says,
“The Root of Jesse will spring up,
one who will arise to rule over the nations;
in him the Gentiles will hope.”
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you
may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Living Into God’s Word1. Today is the first day of Advent and the first day of the
new Church year. How will you make today different
and special and dedicated to God?
2. We prepare our church for Christ’s coming with
decorations. How are you decorating the inside of your
heart?
3. Advent is the season of _________.
4. What is the blessing of waiting?
5. What is the blessing of emptiness?
6. List the name of at least one person for which you can
be an agent of Hope.
7. Why do we use cedar, fir, and holly to decorate for
this holy season?
8. The Advent candles “count down” the Sundays until
Christmas. How do you “count down” the days until the
coming of Christ?
9. What do you hope for this season of Advent?
10. How will you “live empty” for this season of Advent?

ADOPT A FAMILY - During the Christmas season, we adopt designated families from our
partner school, Matula Elementary. The families are selected by the school administration,
and they will certainly benefit from our donations. On Nov 24, Dec 1 and 8, Christmas trees
will be located in the Sanctuary Lobby and Fellowship Hall 2. The trees will have tags
describing specific items that the family members can use. Please pray about taking a tag
and blessing the members of these families in need. Bring in all unwrapped items to the
church no later than Sunday, Dec 15. A special collection box will be available for your
gifts in the Sanctuary Lobby and also in Fellowship Hall 2. Thank you in advance for your
generosity; our church congregation is truly a blessing to our community.
BOX TOPS FOR MATULA - As you may know, for several years, there has been a plastic box
in the lobby available for those of you who are clipping and saving Box Tops for Matula
Elementary School. Well, now, NO MORE CLIPPING. No more bringing your Box Tops in.
You can download the All-New Box Tops App - designate Matula as your school of choice
- shop as you normally would - then simply scan your store receipts to find participating
products. The app will automatically credit Matula with your Box Top earnings. There are
so many items on your store list these days that are qualifying for credit. If you have any
questions, contact Jean Sigmon at [email protected]. And, if you would rather
continue to clip your Box Tops, the box in the lobby will still be available.
BLESSING BUDDIES - The Prayer Shawl ministries Blessing Buddies were a big hit, which
means we need more. Please donate a new Teddy Bear for our Blessing Buddies ministry.
These bears will spend time in worship and prayer with our congregation, and then be
taken to bless those who need some comfort from their church family. There will be a box
in the front entrance for your donations, or you can bring them to the church office any time
during the week.
WORSHIPWORSHIP SCHEDULE - The Sunday morning worship schedule is: Café Worship at 8:30 AM

SERVICE & CARINGPERSON'S MEMORIAL DAY INTERFAITH SERVICE - Christ Church in La Plata will once
again join with Lifestyles of Maryland to host the Person's Memorial Day Interfaith Service.
Because of the weekend, we will anticipate the longest day of the year by 36 hours or so,
and will hold the service on Thursday, December 19 at 4:30 pm at Christ Church, 112
Charles Street in La Plata. We will end by gathering outside with candles, to recognize the
plight of so many who have no "indoors" to go to. If you would like to participate, if you
have a choir or church band that would like to sing, please contact Christ Church at
301-392-1051. We will light candles to remember those who've died homeless in our
community in the past year.
CUB SCOUT PACK 423 - La Plata United Methodist Church is the Charter Organization for
Cub Scout Pack 423. Cub Scouting is fun for the whole family. In Scouting, boys and girls
start with their best right now selves, and grow into their very best future selves. It's fun,
hands-on learning, and achievement that puts kids in the middle of the action and prepares
them for today - and for life. The leadership of Pack 423 is grateful for the opportunity to
be a part of La Plata United Methodist Church, bringing families from the community
together to experience a place to belong. The cost of Scouting is a true investment in a
child's education and future. Please consider supporting the efforts of the Pack with a
donation to fund the pack programming. You can donate electronically on laplataumc.org,
click Online Giving, and choose the line item Cub Scouts Pack 423.
CANDY BARS FOR SALE - Cub Scout Pack 423 is selling World's Finest Chocolate for $1.00
a bar to benefit the pack. Please contact Mark Stancliff at [email protected] or stop
by the church office to get your candy bars.
RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE - The Mission committee is looking for someone to serve as a
coordinator for the Red Cross Blood Drives. The coordinator would need to be present to
organize the volunteers from the church, receive the truck and the staff, be around to
trouble shoot and close up after the drive. Joyce Dean has been serving in this capacity for
many years, but is unable to continue due to her illness. Please call the church office if you
are interested in volunteering or would simply like some additional information.
-
FOOD PANTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP - The Food Pantry is requesting your donations of the
following items, grape jelly, canned peaches, pears, mandarin oranges, applesauce, (no
peel off cups please), pasta meal bags, baked beans, soups, children's juice boxes, snack
items for kids (individual wrapped cookies, cheese crackers etc.). You may place your
donated items in the Food Donation Box in the front entrance. Pet food donations are
always appreciated. You can also make monetary donations, just write "Food Pantry" in the
memo line of your check, or give online.
FAITH SHARINGMAKE A NEW FRIEND TODAY - As you enter Church today to worship, look around and see
if you can find someone you don't know. During Passing of the Peace, make a point to
introduce yourself to them and invite them to join you in an activity of the Church. If you
can't get to them during the Passing of the Peace, hang around for a bit after worship and
strike up a conversation with them. In time you'll discover if they are long lost members,
or here for the first time. Either way, you get to make a new friend. Thank you for being
one of the friendliest and most caring congregations around.
PLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS - It is the simplest and most effective way to share Christ
with others: just invite your friends to church with you. Most people who grew up as
Christians and who aren't in a church say they just haven't found a church they like, and
because no one has invited them. Most people if you ask, will say yes to an invitation. Just
ask them to come to church for a special event, or special Sunday, or to hear a sermon you
think will help them.
HAS GOD BLESSED YOU? - When God answers our prayers, or provides healing, or helps
us find a job or get a promotion; when God has touched our lives – we have a responsibility
to tell others what God has done. This is a great way to start a conversation about our faith
with those who know us. Tell them how you feel about being touched by God, or how God
has answered your prayers.
ADMINISTRATIONHOLIDAY - The church office will be closed on Thursday, November 28 and Friday,
November 29 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
STEWARDSHIP - Please be sure that the outer doors close firmly and are locked when you
leave the building. Turn out the lights when you leave a room. Turn off the heat/air
conditioner in the room you are using. These are all things we can do to keep our building
secure, our members safe, and our operating costs down.
-
