Ametà del V secolo a.C., mentre in Egitto scoppiava la più signifi cativa rivolta contro gli invasori persiani capeggiata da Inaro, in Sicilia ad Akragas, colonia greca fondata nel VI° secolo a.C. e fra

le più importanti città del mondo mediterraneo, veniva eretto il Tempio di Era (Giunone). Su un crinale roccioso che delimita a sud l’altopiano su cui sorgeva l’abitato classico, emergono ancora oggi i suoi resti e quelli dei templi dorici dedicati alla Concordia, ad Eracle (Ercole), a Zeus (Giove) Olimpico, a Castore e Polluce (Dioscuri) e a Hephaistos (Vulcano).Siamo nella Valle dei Templi di Agrigento, uno dei siti archeologici più rappresentativi della civiltà greca classica, caratterizzato da un’eccezionale stato di conservazione ed inserito nel 1998 fra i patrimoni dell’umanità. Il Parco archeologico e paesaggistico della Valle, che si estende per 1300 ettari, è nel suo genere

il sito più grande del mondo. Vi si trova anche il tempio di Atena che venne costruito lontano dalla valle e che oggi si trova nel centro storico di Agrigento; il tempio L, completamente distrutto già in epoca classica e recentemente scoperto, il tempio di Asclepio costruito lontano dalle mura della città e luogo di pellegrinaggio dei malati. Sulla parte orientale della città, si trova il tempio di Demetra, ed infi ne il Tempio di Iside, situato all’interno del Museo archeologico di San Nicola. Akragas fu una delle principali città del mondo antico, centro urbano importante sia economicamente che politicamente. Il periodo greco durò circa 370 anni, durante i quali la città acquistò grande potenza e splendore, tanto da essere soprannominata da Pindaro “la più bella città dei mortali”.

During the second half of the 5th century B.C., at a time in which in Egypt the most important revolt against the Persian invaders, headed by Inaros, was taking place, the Temple of Hera was erected in

Akragas in Sicily, a Greek colony founded in the 6th century B.C. and among the most important cities in the Mediterranean world. Its remains, as well as those of the Doric temples dedicated to Concordia, Hercules, Zeus (Jove), Olympus, Castor and Pollex (the Dioskouri) and Hephaestus, are still visible today situated on a rocky ridge which to the south delimits the high plain on which the ancient settlement stood.We are in the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento, one of the most representative archaeological sites of classical Greek culture, characterised by the excellent state of conservation of the sites and which was included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1998.The archaeological park, and the landscape of the Valley itself which extends over a territory of 1300 hectares, is the largest archaeological site in the world. Here you can also fi nd the temple of Athena which was constructed at a distance from the valley and which is now located in the historical centre of Agrigento, Temple L, which was completely destroyed in ancient times and has only recently been discovered, and the Temple of Asclepius, which was constructed far from the city walls and which became a place of pilgrimage for the sick. On the eastern site of the city, one fi nds the Temple of Demeter and, fi nally, the Temple of Isis, which is located within the Archaeological Museum of San Nicola. Akragas was one of the most important cities of the ancient world, an urban centre that was both economically and politically important. The Greek period of the city lasted 370 years, during which

time the city achieved great levels of power and splendour, such that it was named by Pindar as “the most beautiful city of the mortals”.
