For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD.
St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582), the great reformer of the Car-melite Order, once slipped and fell in the mud on the way to her convent. In her annoyance she turned to God and famous-
ly said, “If this is how You treat Your friends, no wonder why You have so few of them!” Sometimes we may feel this way with God. Whether it is over something trivial or some-thing catastrophic, we are left asking “Why?” We tell ourselves, that if we could only under-stand, then we would be willing to accept what has happened. But sometimes, we can’t under-stand – except to understand that God’s ways are not our ways. Our frustration with this lack of understanding is most common when some-thing bad happens. But what about when something good happens, do we look at the Lord and marvel at how different his ways are than ours? Today’s passage comes to us as Isaiah is speaking about the Lord’s mercy. The scoun-drel and the wicked find mercy in God in a way that we cannot comprehend. This mercy is not the “human” way, but God’s way. The same is true of the forgiveness that we have received from the Lord, and of the miracles the Lord has given us, and of the very presence of God brought before us through the sacrifice of the Mass. All of this… is God’s way, not ours! So as we complain about not understanding the difficult moments of our life, let us take a mo-ment to marvel at the beautiful and unexplain-able gifts the Lord is giving us. All in His way! In Christ, T-Père

How to Build a Culture of Life Watching the news and reading the headlines, we may feel helpless seeing the heartbreaking lack of respect for hu-man life.. How do we respond when our efforts seem small in the face of the cul-ture of death?

Prayer is at the center of 40 Days for Life. During each campaign, we are calling on people of faith across the nation … and around the world … to fall on their knees before the Lord, asking Him to hear our plea and heal our land. The largest 40 Days for Life campaign EVER, starts on Wednes-day, September 27. For more information go to www.usccb.org/prolife
