WATERTOWN, N. Y., SATURDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 5, 1870. No. 261. THE DAILY TIMES. WATERTOWN, ■ HQ.Y. 5, m a Falling Loavei. Falling, the autumn leaflets, Yellow and withered and sere ; While autumn winds are singing The dirge ot the waning year._ falling, the solemn leaflets, Out of my Book of Life— The days of spring aud summer, With pleasure once so rife. Falling, from life.'s tree, the leaflets, Many and many a friend j Fallen, and leave me waiting To meet, liks them, my end. Fallen—friendB, life, pleasure ! It were an awful thing Where the leaf fall uot an earnest Of an other blighter spring. Where all shall be recreated By the touch of a magio hand, And share, in glad re-uriion, Life in the summer land. “Tho Season.” Certain slight, significant hints tell us that " tho season'1 is beginning—the time when social life all over tlie country closes in on itself, shuts the doors, gives itself up for the cooler months to the tncubstlon of whatever new folly or wholesome good it means to bring into the world. What new creed or idea muy he hatched by so liety in the coming winter is, perhaps, quite as well worth attention as the re sult of elect ions. Life is Janus-faced, and only half Tliadc up of politics, after all. Men dose n’t live hy votes alone. Brown’s neighbor and friend and wi hr; nnd the intangible relations full of come dy nnd tragedy that bind him to them, inatter more, at bottom than anything Hoffman or Tweed eon do to him. It is this foolish, subtle, strong social life that commands his real life overy day while he lives, and keeps its hold on him to tho last breath when he comes to die. There are peculiar reasons, too, why the present season should he noted and its symptoms reported. Certain diseases and abnormal phases of life were never more suggestively thrust into view than daring the last few months, both in this country and England. The criminal records aro ordinarily supplied hy what is called the dangerous classes, nr, if otherwise, are ar counted for by some individual phenome non nf v ice. But surh rnscs as tirat of Mar garet Waters,or the Mordaunt divorce suit, indicate radical defects in the structure of the society to whieh educated, respectable pro pie Iselnng. These eases, it is .true, are English ; but it is high time that .ire looked to see if we had no Augean stables of our own to clean. '. err vbody knows thut the baby farm ris in London bavo their parallel in New- Yotk. Everybody knows ton, lhe trade the ..renew of palaces, "overy brick of which is cemented with murder.” They op-nly advertise their calling .journals w liich are professedly the orgsfis of tho wealthier classes. Wc do not intend to-day to disturb this f..nl subject moro than to say that “So- <i. ty," as molded and ruled by tho loaders o f the tow, is largely responsible for the -tsteof morals which result in baby-far iiiMvrw in England and female Thug-rloctor# in New Y'ork. Society is, after all, under the control of woman : it is her public ex prcssion of certain ideas the garb she chooses for hospitality, love, fncnilship, marriage. The view, mean or pure in ■vyhich these things aro held by the fash ion iblr women in cities is imitated by tho next hi order, and so down to the'ver; dr. *rs. In country lifo it indifferent. Falling, the autumn leaflets, Yellow and withered and sere ;

While autumn winds are singing The dirge ot the waning year._

falling, the solemn leaflets,Out of my Book of Life—

The days of spring aud summer, With pleasure once so rife.

Falling, from life.'s tree, the leaflets, Many and many a friend j

Fallen, and leave me waiting To meet, liks them, my end.

Fallen—friendB, life, pleasure !It were an awful thing

Where the leaf fall uot an earnest Of an other blighter spring.

Where all shall be recreated By the touch of a magio hand,

And share, in glad re-uriion,Life in th e summer land.
