Brownfields :- - is a property on which expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be
complicated by the presence, or perceivedpresence, of contamination.
EPA, USA
- - is a loose term used to describe land whichhas already beendeveloped, as opposed to green field sites, whichhave not.
BBC, UK
- - unused and abandoned sites are
scars on the landscapeand often the legacy of our industrial past. They arethe result of heavy industrial activity that did not pay as much attentionto environmental concerns as we do today.

Urban agriculture
Has potential to improve the quality of life in urban areas by increasing foodsecurity, providing opportunities for community development, andimproving the aesthetics of the urban landscape.
Obstacles:
land availabilityrestricted budgets
soil contamination.
Challenges

16/39
Soil Contamination
A major barrier to urbanagriculture initiatives, becausecontaminants are present inmost urban soils at levelshigher than are accepted for
agricultural use.These contaminants can betaken up by plants grown inthese soils, and can be harmfulto human health if the produceis consumed.
The barrier of landavailability could bepartially overcome ifbrownfields could beused as sites for
urban agriculture.

Remediation
Remediation involves the removal of contaminants.
Physical remediation ;
Excavation / Geotextiles / Soil washing / Soil vapour
Bioremediation remediation ;
Microbial remediation/ Phytoremediation/
Fungal remediation/ Compost remediation

PhytoremediationThe process of using
plants to degradeorganiccontaminants or toextract toxic metalsfrom the soil andtransport them intothe above-groundshoots.
In the case of extraction,the contaminatedplants must later be
disposed of soil.
